Ran (1985)
Notes: This movie is probably one of Akira Kurosawa's most famous work, probably his last masterpiece. If I recalled correctly Kurosawa actually spent decades prepping for this movie. Indeed, he began writing the film 10 years before its release and he spent also ten years storyboarding every shot in the film as paintings. This preparation went so far that ‘Kagemusha’, his previous directing effort and another movie with a very solid reputation, was actually a 'practice' for the great Japanse master before creating this piece of Art. In my opinion, it is not really one of his most accessible movies (I personally prefer ‘Rashomon’ which remains by far his best movie in my opinion) but it is definitely a gorgeous flick and the whole thing was quite mesmerizing to behold.

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I maybe I should check it out again at some point. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, even though it was nothing amazing, I always had a weak spot for this flick and it is defi” read more

Frantz (2016)
chosen by Peter Notes: You never really know what you will get with François Ozon and, this time, he came up with some hommage to the 30's German black-and-white movies (apparently, it was even a remake of a movie directed by Ernst Lubitsch called 'Broken Lullaby'). Well, first of all, it was easily the most gorgeous movie delivered by Ozon so far and the actors involved were all pretty strong. Unfortunately, even though everybody seemed to be really enthusiast about this tale, I can't say it really amazed me. I mean, I really liked the mix between drama, romance and even thriller but, somehow, it was still missing something. The main issue, I guess, was that this concept of having a mysterious stranger somehow replacing someone who has been recenly deceased was actually a rather old gimmick and I don't think that Ozon added much to this old formula. Especially from the moment you finally learn the truth, it became rather flat and, in the 3rd act, when the German woman goes after this mysterious French man, it felt rather redundant and didn't really change the situation of both characters. Still, even though it didn't completely blow away, it was a very nice watch. (Dec. 2016)

Back to the Future
Notes: When I was a kid, like anyone selse, I loved all the basic stuff. You know, Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood, James Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones,... However, somehow, I never really felt much connection with this flick though. I mean, I thought it was pretty neat, that's for sure, but I never thought it was really so mind-blowing and, I guess, it probably had to do with the story. Basically, you have this kid who finds a time-travelling super car and, instead of discovering the future and some fantastic world, he actually goes back to the 50's in the USA. I don't know, maybe it was pretty neat for all the American kids watching this flick, but I didn't care much about the time period they picked up. Sure, it was decent enough but when I think about time-travelling, my first thought wouldn't be 'Wow, I would really love to go 30 years back in time and see my parents when they were my age'. Still, I have to admit it, it remains a really fun movie, Marty McFly and Doc Brown were both incredibly entertaining and the DeLorean must be the coolest time-machine ever created.

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I thought I might as well check it out. The very same year, Denzel Washington showed up in 'The Equilazer' which had a very similar plot but even though 'The Equalizer' was also quite successful, I had actually a hard time to care about ” read more

Brazil (1985)
Notes: It is considered by many as Terry Gilliam's Magnum Opus and even though it might not be my favorite movie he made (I think I actually prefer ‘12 Monkeys’), it is still pretty obvious that this movie completely deserves its prestigious reputation. Surprisingly, Roger Ebert really didn’t like it at all but he was an expection as the movie was really well received when it was released. Somehow, I still can understand Ebert though. Indeed, I really believe that Gillim is one of the most imaginative directors out there and for already more than 30 years but his movies are always confused and confusing and they can be sometimes rather frustrating to watch. Still, as usual with this director, the whole thing was visually impressive but there was also something quite quite spellbinding about this tale. Personally, I always had a weak spot for futuristic dystopian stories and this must be one of the most famous movies in this genre.

The Tudors
Seasons : 4 (all of them) Notes : Even though we first had to watch a few episodes, my wife was still sold eventually. Indeed, the whole thing looked quite amazing and most of it was quite fascinating. I wish they didn't spend almost all the running time on the rather convoluted love life of the king but it still worked fine. I was also impressed by how accurate it was if you compare it to what you can read in the history books. It is pretty obvious that this TV show was a big inspiration for 'Game of Thrones' which shows how good it was.

Seasons : only 3 episodes Notes : Since my wife has always been a big fan of Hannibal Lecter's movies, I thought it would be pretty neat to watch this TV-show with her. Well, eventually, I thought it was not bad, nothing amazing, but decent enough but, to my surprise, she didn't care much for the damned thing so we stopped after 3 episodes.
