An average movie

“After ‘Klein Teun’, Alex van Warmerdam took his time and, 5 years later, he finally came up with a new directing effort but, unfortunately, it turned out to be his weakest movie so far, I’m afraid. At least, the DVD I watched was of much better quality than the DVDs I saw for his previous movi” read more

Notes: Well, as usual with this director, it ended up being mix of many different things such as a family feature, some science-fiction, some social commentary, some comedy,... and, honestly, even though this mix was interesting, I can't say I was really blown away. I mean, it was well made, some scenes were even rather impressive visually speaking but I think it was just too unfocused for my taste. For example, there were many interesting characters played by a really solid cast but, in fact, none of them was really properly developed, except maybe Mija, the main character. That was also the tricky thing by mixing such elements. On one hand, I did like how they displayed that most big corporations will claim that their products are healthy, organic, and other great things when it is in fact some complete PR bullshit. Later on, I also enjoyed this moment when the other Mirando sister points out that people actually don't actually really care what you sell them, as long as it is really cheap, which is also really true. So, those were interesting points but, then, every 5 minutes, you would have Mija claiming that she doesn't care at all about all this, that the only thing just wants is her pet back. I mean, if the main character doesn't care about all this, what should we? So, the movie kept going back and forth between all these interesting ideas but the end-result was never really convincing. Anyway, even though it didn't completely work for me, it was still a decent watch.

A good movie

A good movie

“I wasn’t really planning to watch this movie but since it was given as a bonus with my Pusher trilogy DVD box, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, the interesting thing about this movie was that, even though the outcome was actually really positive (Nicolas Winding Refn indeed managed to” read more

In My Father
Notes: Well, to be honest, I was amazed by how underwhelming this movie turned out to be. First of all, I have to admit it, I had actually no idea what it was about before watching the damned thing and it took me a while to more or less understand this story. It was in fact a major issue with this movie. What did the makers try to tell us? Should we feel sorry for Hans? Should we admire him? It was never clear. It seems that they didn't want to offend neither the atheïsts and the hardcore religious people so the movie landed really awkwardly in the middle. I mostly blame the directing. Sure, it was visually rather appealing but unfortunately terribly weak and also completely tone-deaf. It was like this mysterious character, Jozef Mieras. The guy kept popping up completely randomly and it was so poorly done, at some point, I thought they might pull some kind of 'Fight Club' trick on the viewers. Anyway, even though I'm atheïst, I have always been fascinated by religion and I believe it could have been a strong story, maybe the book is actually pretty good, but the materical was handled just really poorly here.

A good movie

“Since I always had a weak spot for Spike Lee's work, of course, I was really eager to check his directing debut. Well, what I liked the most was the fact it was so much lighter than his usual work which was just so refreshing. Then, even though it was sometimes slightly pretentious, which was rather” read more
