I Lost My Body
What is it about? A story of Naoufel, a young man who is in love with Gabrielle. In another part of town, a severed hand escapes from a dissection lab, determined to find its body again. Quote: "I never said it was easy. You can't win every time. That's life." [youtube id=iblGg3Rpub8]

Notes: I think it’s pretty awesome that, in France, someone could manage to deliver such an edgy surreal and mature animated feature. Sure, the content might be too dark for some viewers but I thought it was actually extremely refreshing. On top of that, even though some might not be impressed by the quality of the animation, I thought it was really cool that they went for some hand-drawn animation. However, what was above all enjoyable was this really surreal story. Indeed, at first, I was wondering how they would tell a whole story over a severed hand and, eventually, it wasn’t really surprising that they would go for some flashback scenes but I was amazed by how efficient it turned out to be. The interesting thing is that this surreal tale was actually taking place in a hyper realistic setting. Indeed, they didn't give us the typical glamor version of Paris but a much more realistic version with some grey landscapes, dirty metros and people being generally unfriendly with each other (the first encounter between Naoufel and Gabrielle was such a fine example and the scene was so pitch-perfect). Eventually, you don’t learn much about Naoufel which could be frustrating but I think you learned enough and this lack of information and context did make his character even more intriguing and it was pretty much the same thing with Gabrielle. Eventually, it has been a while since I have seen such a poetic movie with so many intricate layers.

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this sequel but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even if it was not a complete disaster, it was still seriously weak though, even more than its predecessor. I have to admit that I’m not really familiar wit” read more

A good movie

“First of all, I have to admit that I haven’t seen many episodes of ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ in the 90’s but it does make sense since I was living in France at the time and, back then, we didn’t have access to MTV. Eventually, I basically saw it a couple of times when I went to the US a few s” read more

Dawson City: Frozen Time (2016)
Notes: I have to admit that I had no idea what this movie was about before watching the damned thing but it turned out to be so fascinating after all. Indeed, they went actually way beyond simply telling the tale of this astonishing discovery, they actually went all the back to the foundation of the city itself. Well, while this approach might seem odd, in my opinion, it actually made sense and I think there was no other way to properly explain how all these ancient films could be found this way. The fact that the story of Dawson City was just so intriguing also helped and to see this story with no reconstruction but with some vintage pics and some ancient movies almost just as old the actual events that took place at the time was actually quite mesmerizing. It’s too bad that, on a few occasions, they did deviate too much from the main topic as they focused instead on some really random events which had, in my opinion, nothing to do with Dawson City and/or the discovery of these nitrate movies (WWI, the White Sox scandal, the deportation of Alexander Berkman,…). Anyway, it was a minor issue and it was still quite a fascinating documentary.

Notes: Even though I did like it, to be honest, it never really blew me away though. First of all, I think there was a lack of context. Indeed, when these characters arrived in Arkansas, they had a whole life in South-Korea and then again another life in California but you learned so very little about what happened back then and, as a result, I couldn't really compare their current situation with what they had before and make up my mind on my own if it was indeed an improvement or not. The other thing that bothered me was the fact that, while Jacob maybe didn't focus on his family, at least, he had a very specific goal in mind, I don't think that Monica was given the same curtesy. Indeed, what did she actually want? What did she expect when she knew that they were going to live in a farm in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas? As a result, I was constantly rooting for Jacob which was probably unfair and I wish we got more involved in their arguments (which apparently started way before they got to Arkansas) to get a better understanding of this woman who was pretty much reduced to a whining sour wife. This lack of information was probably due to the fact that the story was told from David's perspective but, to be honest, telling such stories from the point of view of a very young child is usually rather frustrating, at least, as far as I'm concerned. Still, there is no denying that it was visually neat with a very nice nostalgic gentle mood. Furthermore, the relationship between David and his grandmother was pure gold and it's too bad it was cut short by a cruel stroke. Finally, after 'The Walking Dead' and 'Burning', Steven Yeung gave here another completely different and yet really strong performance and the range displayed by this actor so far is just quite impressive.
