Notes: For some time now, I have been watching some Soviet movies but this one was easily one of the most intriguing I have seen so far. First of all, the first thing that impressed me was the editing. Indeed, except for a couple of scenes with a rather poor transition, it was actually really tight and super effective, especially compared to most of the other Soviet movies I have seen recently. The other interesting aspect of this movie was that it gave a really different perspective on the Russian revolution. If this perspective was actually accurate, of course, itâs a different story though. I have to admit it, itâs only afterwards that I understood that the soldiers in Mongolia were actually British but, in fact, the British were never in Mongolia back then. Anyway, Russia was, and still is, a huge country including so many various peoples and cultures and it was really interesting to see the Russian revolution and civil war from a different point of view, even if the end-result was hardly objective since it was a propaganda piece. The approach chosen was that, even at the far corners of Mongolia, there was also a class struggle taking place and the people also had to rise up against the capitalist oppressor. Unfortunately, as usual with such Soviet propaganda movies, the characters were not developed whatsoever but something that bothered me even more was the randomness of the whole thing but it is also inherent to the genre, Iâm afraid.2 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Somehow, I have seen most of the action flicks starring Liam Neeson since he showed up in âTakenâ and I wonder if this movie might be actually the weakest of the bunch. Indeed, the damned thing was just so derivative and simply just plain boring to watch. The worst thing was that the concept actually did have some potential. Indeed, the idea of a FBI agent specialized in helping out undercover agents in trouble was actually pretty neat and the fact that the guy was struggling with OCD was also interesting. In fact, thatâs one thing that really bothered me with this movie, the fact that Liam Neeson doesnât really even try anymore. Indeed, even though this guy was supposedly affected by some severe OCD, he actually played the character exactly the same way he played his usual tough guys which was just so lazy and disappointing. Sure, he would repeat some gestures 3 times just to show that, look, we are not joking, he really has OCD, but, in fact, it just didnât have any impact on the story after all, at least, not enough. Instead of properly developing this aspect, they spent way too much showing that his relationship with his family was strained which is such a boring clichĂ© and the fate of 99% of Neesonâs characters in such action flicks. Concerning the rest of the movie, it was basically dealing with some tedious generic conspiracy involving the boss of the main character which was not only seriously predictable but another boring clichĂ©.2 years, 5 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it turned out to be rather hard to judge this movie after all. Indeed, the first issue was that I saw a very nasty version on YouTube (seriously, the first scenes taking place during the night were borderline unwatchable). The other issue was that I wasnât familiar with Canterburyâs pilgrimage and, even though I heard about the Tales of Caunterbury written by Chaucer, I knew pretty much nothing about it either. Apparently, Powell and Pressburger thought it would be a great idea to combine this material with a contemporary story taking place during WWII but this mix was rather bewildering, at least, to me. Eventually, as a result, it was probably their most complicated movie to decipher and I might have to re-watch it at some point to really make up my mind about the damned thing. However, even if this movie, like most of the movies delivered by these two masters, seem to have a strong reputation, I still think that the plot was rather weak though. Basically, for about 2 hours, you have the main characters chasing some mysterious âglue manâ which wasnât exactly fascinating. The fact that this âglue manâ was so easy to spot right from the start probably didnât help but, all in all, it was a rather lame story going at a terribly sluggish pace. Concerning the characters, at least, it was a nice time bubble showing the British people living in Kent around WWII but, even if it was interesting, none of these characters was really charismatic or entertaining enough.2 years, 5 months ago
