An average movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Carice van Houten, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, even though the material was super interesting, to be honest, the damned thing turned to be rather half-baked, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, ” read more

Notes: In fact, I remember very well the first time I saw it. Basically, my girlfriend at the time actually picked it up saying that it was a classic and that we should definitely watch it together. Well, back then, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, the musicals has always been my least favorite genre and, even though through the years I have learned to be more appreciative towards these movies, when I was younger, I was not so forgiving. As a result, even though this movie was indeed supposed to be a classic, I thought it was just so boring. Well, Iā€™m glad I gave it a second chance at some point. Indeed, most of the songs are actually really catchy and some of them even became some huge classics since then. The tricky thing with this movie is that, when the musical came out, it was a contemporary piece dealing with the hippie culture but every single new adaptation, including this movie, was basically a period piece which had to recreate this time period. Well, in this area, the movie still struggled in my opinion and Iā€™m not surprised that the makers of the original musical were not convinced or pleased by the fact that the hippies were portrayed as some kind of goofballs. The attempts of the makers to create a plot around this musical were also commendable but not entirely successful either. Finally, the characters were barely developed but I guess that it is something inherent to the genre.

“Since this movie had received some really poor reviews and ratings, I wasnā€™t expecting much but since I have a weak spot for Kevin Bacon, I thought I might as well check it out. Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I remember it very well when it was released In France. Indeed, at the time, there was a lot of buzz around this movie and it quickly became a huge cult classic. Apparently, it also reached some international recognition. With this in mind, I had some really high expectations before watching the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was really disappointing. I mean, I have to admit it, the whole thing really had some potential, it started pretty well, it was a little bit like ā€˜Spinal Tapā€™ but instead of some hard rockers, you had a serial killer and it had some pitch black humor. But after a while, the jokes got worse and worse with 2 top moments, one when the main character goes to a restaurant to eat some mussels and eventually throws everything up (this scenes lasted like 20 minutes...) and one of the final scenes when the guy rapes a woman... Eventually, I really had a hard time to care for the whole thing.

Notes: I'm not a huge fan of Westerns in general but I always enjoy a good Western from time to time but, honestly, it wasn't one of them. I mean, Jane Fonda was really charming, as usual, and she tries really hard to make her character appealing but it didn't work, I'm afraid. I know, it is just a Western comedy and I shouldn't take it too serioualy but I thought it was one of the most boring and idiotic Westerns I have ever seen. I mean, it wasn't really bad, I'll give you that, but it wasn't entertaining either. The worst thing, the most frustrating thing, was that Lee Marvin eventually won an oscar for his supporting part. He wasn't really bad and he actually gave a decent performance but, from all the characters he has portrayed during his impressive career, was it really the one which should have been rewarded?! I don't think so .... Furthermore, I think it was a good idea to make a Western with a female lead character, I haven't seen many of those, but they should have provided a more interesting plot than this.

Top Gun (1986)
Notes: After I rewatched this movie, I was actually surprised by how little I actually remembered it and, on top of that, I have to admit that, this time around, it turned out to be actually fairly entertaining. I mean, even though it is a huge classic from the 80's, I'm still not a huge fan but I think I was at first too harsh. It is also funny that the only thing I did remember where the impressive dogfight scenes but, in fact, I was also surprised by the fact that there were only a few of them after all. In fact, it turned out that at least half of the movie was about the romance between Maverick and his instructor. So, basically, it is an action flick mixed with a fairly generic romance. Eventually, what actually impressed the most was to see a young Tom Cruise in his breakthrough performance. Indeed, even if it was hardly his best work, the guy was just really charismatic and it was also quite neat to see the similarities between Maverick and himself. Basically, Maverick wanted to be the best pilot and to rule the sky and Tom Cruise wanted to be the biggest movie star and to rule the box-office (which he did for a very long time) and Cruise was actually a perfect choice to play this character.

Notes: Sometimes, you keep hearing about a movie, everyone seems to agree that it is a great classic, you get some high hopes, expecting to watch something truly amazing. But then, you watch the damned thing and, as it turns out, you donā€™t connect at all with the movie. Well, unfortunately, thatā€™s what happened for me with this movie. I mean, sure, I thought it was not bad but I seriously couldnā€™t see what was so amazing about it. First of all, I have to admit that I was very young when I watched it and, maybe, if I would re-watch it nowadays, I would be blown away but I have my doubts. Basically, the main issue I had is that I never really cared for the episodic structure. Sure, I donā€™t necessarily need a plot but all these little stories were rather half-baked. On top of that, many people (including the great Roger Ebert) thought it was just hilarious and, once again, I thought it was fairly amusing but not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid.

The Hill (1965)
Notes: To be honest, I had never heard of the damned thing before but it turned out to be so much better than I expected. Indeed, even though it did start like a rather conventional POW story, eventually, it turned out to be one of the bleakest anti-army movies I have ever seen. In fact, the story was not actually dealing with some regular POWā€™s but with a military prison with some British soldier convicted for some minor offences such as insubordination, being drunk while on duty, going AWOL or petty theft. So, everyone involved, guards and prisoners alike, were all soldiers on the same side and, yet, the treatment displayed went way beyond only ā€˜punishingā€™ the convicted soldiers. Indeed, they had to face such sadistic treatment that all the men sharing this cell slowly became pretty much mad. Seriously, towards the end, the situation got completely out of hand and the whole thing was just a massive chaos but it was actually quite fascinating to behold. For Sean Connery, this movie was the opportunity to show that he could do something else than James Bond and while you might expect him to play your usual tough guy, his character turned out to be slightly more complex and Connery definitely delivered here one of his best performances.
