Notes: It was the final film that Charles Chaplin produced in America before moving to Europe after being accused of being communist and many consider it as his last masterpiece and therefore I was really eager to check it out. There was also a huge fuss about the fact that Buster Keaton and Charles Chaplin were finally both on screen but, honestly, even though they were pretty good together, Keaton had a rather small part. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie was not as great as his previous work. Here, Chaplin has got older and his movie doesn't have the energy of his earlier flicks and it tends to be more dramatic and contemplative but it was not necessarily a bad thing. I don't know, I basically grew up watching his funny movies with the Tramp and I really had a hard time switching from genre with him. On the other hand, the more I think about this movie, the more I believe that the whole thing was actually really subtle and thoughtful so I think I will have to re-watch someday to make up my mind for good.

Cyrano de Bergerac
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. In France, it is a massive classic and it was a big critical and commercial success when it was released. Indeed, it was a prestigious production involving the adaptation of a French literary classic with GĆ©rard Depardieu in the title role. The guy gave here eventually one of the most unforgettable performances of his career (he was even nominated for the Academy Awards, something really rare for a performance in a foreign language). And yet, even though I did enjoy it, I canā€™t say it really blew me away though. Indeed, to be honest, the whole thing was, in my opinion, in fact a rather silly story when you think about it. I mean, if you would strip the great costumes, the decors, the dialogues, the actors, you would get something closer to ā€˜Roxanneā€™ which was rather cringe-inducing to behold, at least, as far as Iā€™m concerned. Anyway, even if I wasnā€™t really a big fan, it was still a really solid period drama though.

Moon Knight
What is it about? A former U.S. Marine, struggling with dissociative identity disorder, is granted the powers of an Egyptian moon god. But he soon finds out that these newfound powers can be both a blessing and a curse to his troubled life. My verdict: Wowā€¦ Marvel has done it again! Indeed, while their feature films have become increasingly disappointing (seriously, none of the phase four movies really impressed me), their miniseries are so much more fun and creative. In this case, they went again for something completely different and the end-result was almost their best effort so far (ā€˜Lokiā€™ still remains the unbeatable champ at this point). Indeed, Oscar Isaac was very good, his character(s) was awesome and I love the Egyptian vibe and the archeological adventure approach. Itā€™s too bad that, even though Ethan Hawke was fine as usual, his character turned out to be just another bad guy who wants to kill half of our population. Seriously, I wish they could find some other conflicts for these super-heroes but, aside from that, the damned thing was actually pretty much top-notch. On a last note, I have to admit that it was still slightly disappointing that, through the whole duration and contrary to the other Marvel miniseries, there wasnā€™t a single link with the MCU after all.

An average movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, the cultural and historical background was definitely really interesting but, to be honest, I still didnā€™t care much about the damned thing though. Indeed, the” read more

Notes: Since I kept hearing some really impressive things about this movie (for example, it has been on the IMDb top 250 for a while already), I was really eager to check this flick and I had some rather high expectations. Well, to be be honest, even though I found many things to admire, I can't say it really blew me away though. I mean, it is definitely a gorgeous stop motion animated feature, probably one of the very best I have ever seen, at least in this area. The main issue I had is that even though the story and the characters involved were decent, they never became really more than that, at least, for me. I mean, at some points, I thought that it was finally going towards the right direction but, eventually, it never happened, that magical moment when you are swept away by a great tale. The strange thing is that it was about Asperger syndrome, a form of autism and Autism is a very dear subject to me. Still, while the makers handled the subject very well, it never really grabbed me. Anyway, even if I didn't completely connect with it, it was still a very good feature.

Day for Night
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by FranƧois Truffaut but, even though it is his one of his most critically acclaimed features, I still had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. I mean, it was well done and fairly intriguing but Iā€™m afraid it was still too abstact for me and, to be honest, it all felt rather pretentious to me. The other tricky thing with this rather artistic approach is that you never really get to know the characters involved and you donā€™t really get a plot to hang onto. On the other hand, I was really young when I first saw it so I should definitely check it out again at some point to make up my mind about the damned thing.

Arsenic and Old Lace
Notes: To be honest, I have to admit that I always had a hard time with the screwball comedies and, even though this movie is probably one of the most famous in this genre, I still had a hard time to really care for it. I mean, it's not that the damned thing didnā€™t have some potential, in the contrary. Indeed, it was dealing with a rather lugubrious concept and it could have been an awesome dark comedy. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the tone was just too whimsical for my taste. As a result, the whole insanity angle which was quite fascinating was in fact rather poorly developed. Furthermore, even though Cary Grant was a great choice to play the main character, he didnā€™t deliver one of his best performances (in fact, Grant himself often called it his least favorite of all his movies). On the other hand, Peter Lorre was basically born to play such characters and even though Priscilla Lane didnā€™t have much to do, she looked really lovely.

Animal Farm (1954)
Notes: Iā€™m pretty sure I did watch this animated feature when I was a kid, probably even at school. I was quite impressed back in those days and I thought it was time for a re-watch. Personally, I always had a weak spot with animated features trying to be aimed towards a grown-up audience. Indeed, the market is dominated by the kiddies stuff, which is fine, but the tone is rather monotonous. It was also one of the major weaknesses in this flick, the way they still added some little fluffy bits here and there. It is rather understandable, I mean, the whole thing was terribly bleak which was quite shocking for the audience at the time so, they added the children friendly stuff to make sure they didnā€™t completely alienate the viewers. Personally, I think they should have gone all the way. Still, I thought it was quite fascinating to behold. Indeed, in my opinion, even though this movie was used as anti-communist propaganda by the CIA I think it gives a very good depiction about what went wrong with this ideology. Basically, Communism is actually a great way of thinking but it has been corrupted by some opportunists with the results that everyone thinks that this ideology is complete rubbish.
