A bad movie

“I have to admit that I never cared at all for the Spy Kids franchise but since this new installment was still directed by Robert Rodriguez and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I wish that the very first ‘Spy Kids’ had turned out to be a hug” read more

Spy Kids: Armageddon
From.... (Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World 2011) To... (Spy Kids: Armageddon 2023) Gap between movies : 12 years Was it worth the wait ? : Obviously, no. To be honest, I thought that the previous installment was released only a few years ago. Anyway, both movies were both borderline unwatchable. Hopefully, Robert Rodriguez will finally drop this concept which it did have some potential at some point but it was never properly developed, I'm afraid.

Spy Kids: Armageddon
Notes: To be honest, I wish that the very first ‘Spy Kids’ had turned out to be a huge box-office flop when it was released because Rodriguez would have hopefully dropped the concept right away back then. Seriously, the guy has spent pretty much half of his career making such kids flicks which are just terrible and this new installment was not an exception, I’m afraid. The only interesting idea was the fact that spies have to lie all the time, that’s basically part of the job, but, in this case, how do you raise some children by telling them to be honest and to always tell the truth? I actually liked this paradox but, unfortunately, it was only quickly mentioned by one of the characters at some point but they really did nothing with that after all. The other thing that I enjoyed was that Gina Rodriguez not only did look lovely but she was pretty badass and she also managed to be a convincing mother at the same time. Unfortunately, all the other characters involved were just so underwhelming. I mean, Zachary Levi was not awful but he did really nothing interesting with his character at all. Even more problematic was the fact that, once again, they picked up some of the worst children actors I have seen. Seriously, they were both rather cringe-inducing to behold and it is in fact very often the case in Rodriguez’s kid flicks. Seriously, I’m rather flabbergasted that some critics actually praised these kids for their work on this movie.

A Star Is Born
Notes: To be honest, I thought it was rather difficult to judge this movie. Indeed, by then, it was already the 3d version of this story that I saw, after the 1957 version and the 2018 version (I still have to watch the 1976 version at some point but it seems to be the weakest of the bunch though). However, in this case, it seems rather unfair since this movie was actually the very first one. Anyway, even though it is undoubtedly a popular story, I’m still not sure about it though. Indeed, even though she was definitely a cute girl, they never displayed that Esther Blodgett had such impressive acting skills, she didn’t have any training and it didn’t seem that she had to work really hard to become a huge star. Basically, she bumped into Norman Maine at some point, the guy fell in love with her on the spot and he then launched her career. Nothing wrong with that but, in my opinion, it did rather diminish her achievements. On the other hand, Norman Maine was a strong character, probably more interesting than Esther/Vicky and I understand that some might think he actually stole the show after all. Still, Janet Gaynor was pretty good and, with Fredric March, they had some solid chemistry together.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a really solid reputation (it was nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award among other things), I thought I might as well check it out. “To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Mila Kunis, I thought I might as well check it out. Killers of the Flower Moon
Notes: Even if some people might be worried about the extensive running time, Martin Scorsese, one of the greatest masters, delivered here an impressive tale of greed and love. To be honest, I have to admit that it didn't know much about the Osage and the terrible tragedy that happened on them and you get the opportunity here to learn more about them. However, their tragic fate was not really the main focus here or, at least, in my opinion, it wasn't the biggest asset in this movie. After all, I was above all fascinated by DiCaprio who delivered here one of his very best performances. Indeed, his character was so complex, he was probably one of the most confused men I have ever seen on the silver screen. Basically, he was an average White male who was promised some easy money and, like every White American man at the time, he didn't care one bit about the Indians. And, yet, somehow, he actually fell in love with this beautiful sharp Indian woman who also loved him back. But, then, how could he possibly try to kill this woman, possibly the only person on Earth who actually cared for him, and wipe out also all her family if he loved her so much? On paper, it wouldn't make any sense at all and, yet, DiCaprio was always convincing. It was just so fascinating to see him going through a seemingly endless roller coaster of completely contradicting emotions. Of course, it was also a blast to see him facing Robert De Niro, another film icon, and some of their scenes together were amazing but De Niro's character was so much more one-note and therefore not quite so fascinating. Anyway, it was a great epic, that's for sure.
