Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Notes: Even though I did like it, I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing to be honest. Even though this movie might seem to be, at first, about the rebooting of her murder investigation, it had in fact little do with this investigation at all after all. Basically, it was mostly dealing with 2 characters and how they have to face guilt, judgement and then redemption. However, if this process worked fine with the main character thanks to a really strong performance delivered by Frances McDormand, I wasn’t completely convinced with what happened to Jason Dixon though. Indeed, from the moment that he reads the letter that Willoughby left him, they completely flipped his character around. I mean, so far, Dixon was a fairly pathetic incompetent and easy to hate cop and it was actually quite funny to hear Willoughby saying that he was or could be a good cop since we saw completely the opposite so far. However, from this point on, this character changed drastically, even showing some decent detective skills but this change was rather hard to swallow. Of course, I don’t blame Sam Rockwell, the guy gave another strong performance, it’s just that this story seemed to have just too much impact on his character. Still, it was a rather complex tale with some interesting characters and I should probably re-watch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing.

The Wizard of Oz
Notes: Eventually, it did really live up to its reputation as it was really a magical movie with a huge budget for that time. Indeed, the decors, the costumes, the special effects, the switch from black and white to colour, it all looked pretty awesome. Even though I have never been a huge of musicals, the songs were decent enough and I was even familiar with some of them, even before watching this flick, which shows of how influential this movie has always been. Still, even if I did admire the work done, I can’t say I was really blown away by the damned thing. On one hand, the whole thing was probably slightly too sugercoated for my taste and maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had watched it back then when I was a kid. On the other hand, I guess it is just a matter of taste and the fact that I always had a hard time to care for this genre might explain that I wasn’t really impressed by this movie. Still, it is pretty much a must-see for any decent movie buff.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Luca Guadagnino and since there was a really nice cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, as usual with Guadagnino, the whole thing looked great and, only for this, it was a pleasure to watch t” read more

“To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I do think it is a bad idea that they keep greenlighting this sequels to some comedies which might have been successful at the box-office when these” read more

“I wasn't exactly dying to see this sequel but Nick, my step-son, is a huge fan of monsters flick so we had to see this one in the movie theatre. The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum (1939)
Notes: I have to admit that I’m not really familiar with Kenji Mizoguchi’s work but it is really neat to finally discover this great Japanese master. Anyway, I was rather impressed by how modern this tale actually turned out to be. Indeed, it was basically a story dealing with stardom, art, and love but it could just as well have taken place nowadays. Seriously, I could really picture a modern version dealing with the son of some popstar. Anyway, the main character was such a lonely guy who always lived in the shadows of his illustrious father and, basically, during his whole life, no one really ‘spoke’ with him. Instead, they him kept giving some empty and fake compliments and it’s so interesting because you can be pretty sure that’s how things still go nowadays with most celebrities. Of course, it might seem dubious that he would fall in love with the very first girl that finally tells him something real but I think it’s actually understandable. Indeed, for someone like him, to finally have an actual conversation with another human-being must have been quite intoxicating, even irresistible. On the other hand, you might wonder what Otoku really did get from this relationship but there is no denying that both characters somehow felt a deep connection for each other. I also loved the idea that an actor is like any other artist, in order to become great, they probably should have to face many obstacles because, eventually, how could you portray an emotion that you have never experienced?
