An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kate Beckinsale, I thought I might as well check it out. Apparently, it was adapted from a rather obscure novella from Jane Austen but, to make things even more confusing, they gave it the title of ano” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing interesting things about Jeremy Saulnier, I was quite eager to watch one of his directing efforts so I thought I might check this one out. Well, for this 2nd directing effort, Saulnier took the old (and usually rather boring) revenge genre but he gave it an interesting fresh app” read more

Rebecca
Notes: In my opinion, it is not one of Alfred Hitchcock's great masterpieces but it is still a very solid thriller nonetheless. It was actually a rather important movie in his career. Indeed, it was the first film he made in Hollywood and the only one that managed to win the Best Picture Oscar (that the guy never managed to win a Best Director Academy Award is quite mind-blowing). To be frank, I donā€™t think it is one of the strongest stories developed by the great master but it was greatly compensated by the awesome mood created and the very good cast. Honestly, I havenā€™t seen many movies starring Laurence Olivier but the guy was sure a fine actor and I will definitely check his other movies whenever I get the opportunity. Against him, you had Joan Fontaine, one of the many female stars we have seen in Hitchcockā€™s spellbinding thrillers. Fontaine was pretty good as well and together they had some great chemistry. Anyway, this first American feature was a success and his career which was doing already pretty well became even bigger, much bigger in the following years.

“To be honest, since this movie doesnā€™t really have a stellar reputation, I didnā€™t have some really high expectations but I have to admit that I still wanted to check it out though. Aladdin
Cast : Will Smith What was it about? A kindhearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true. My two cents: To be honest, following the disappointing new version of 'Dumbo', I really lowered down my expectations for this flick but since 'Aladdin' has always been my favorite Classic Disney animated feature, I still wanted to check it out. Well, eventually, I thought it was not bad at all after all. Indeed, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott were some perfect choices to respectively play Aladdin and Jasmine but, of course, I was above all impressed by Will Smith. Indeed, not only he managed to make a tribute to Robin Williams's iconic performance but he also managed to make the character is own somehow. Basically, he completely nailed it and gave here one of best performances in years. Concerning the story itself, well, they played it safe like they did with the new versions of 'Cinderella' and 'Beauty and the Beast' and they kept maybe 90% of the original story. However, it didn't bother me since, as I mentioned before, I always had a weak spot for this fairy tale and the whole thing looked beautiful and it was still pretty damned entertaining. The Philadelphia Story
Notes: Since Iā€™m a huge movie buff, I watch all kinds of movies and Iā€™m particularly interested in Classics. However, to be honest, in my opinion, there are two kinds of classics, some of them which remain untouched by time , and which will always be great and amazing like ā€˜Citizen Kaneā€™ , ā€˜Mā€™, ā€˜ Rashomonā€™ or ā€˜A bout de souffleā€™ and the other sort which are still very well regarded but which seems rather dated like ā€˜Breakfast at Tiffanyā€™sā€™ , ā€˜The Wizard of Ozā€™ or ā€˜Gone with the Windā€™ (Of course, it all depends what your taste is. You might find those movies still amazing and much better than the ones I mentioned before). Anyway, in my opinion, this movie belongs to the second category. I mean, it is a decent comedy with 3 amazing actors (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart) and the whole thing was rather fun but also terribly fluffy and I really had a hard time to care about the story. Iā€™ll give you that it was much better than all those inane romantic-comedies you get nowadays but I canā€™t say I was really blown away by this flick. You could argue that the whole fluffiness is inherent to the genre but I donā€™t agree, a comedy always has to be funny but I donā€™t think it has to be shallow, at least, thatā€™s my opinion.

The Mule
Cast : Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Taissa Farmiga, Michael PeƱa, Laurence Fishburne What was it about? A 90-year-old horticulturist and WWII veteran is caught transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel. My two cents: Following the truly dreadful ā€˜The 15:17 to Parisā€™, easily his weakest directing effort so far, Clint Eastwood didnā€™t waste time and released this movie the very same year. Since it had received some solid reviews, I was quite eager to check it out and see if the guy managed to redeem himself somehow. Well, eventually, even though it was indeed miles better than ā€˜The 15:17 to Parisā€™, it was only a decent watch though. I mean, it was a strong story but I was missing some tension, some suspense. For example, it was refreshing that the main character would get along fine with all these cartel gangsters but this approach did have its drawbacks. Indeed, not only it turned the whole thing unintentionally into a pro-drug trafficking commercial (seriously, if you would believe this movie, to be a drug mule is actually a pretty easy job, with some nice colleagues and lots of easy cash) but it also created a lack of a real threat through the whole thing. However, it was a great character for Eastwood who really nailed it and, as usual, you might wonder if it will be his last acting job. On top of that, you might wonder if there was something autobiographical about this story as Eastwood has fathered at least 8 children with 6 different women and probably neglected most of them while becoming one of the most famous actor and director that ever lived.
