Notes: Eventually, this movie was not as good as Welles's masterpieces such as 'Citizen Kane' but it was still a damned fine picture. As usual with Welles, there was some major tempering from the studio and, as a matter of fact, Orson Welles only made this movie in the first place because he really need some quick cash at the time. Still, even though the whole thing was flawed, the directing was quite awesome and there was also a great mood. At the time, it caused some controversy that Orson Welles decided to have Rita Hayworth cut her hair and bleach it but I thought she looked great. On top of that, she gave a solid performance and stole the show every time she was on the screen. In my opinion, the main weakness was with the story which was nothing original and actually rather pedestrian. Still, in spite of its flaws, it remains a solid film noir feature.6 years ago

Notes: For once, we went to see a documentary with the film club which is always a bold choice in my opinion. First of all, I thought it was terribly
refreshing to see the Afghani people as some regular folks instead as the usual blood-thirsty religious fanatics. Of course, it might seem common sense but, on the other hand, we have been pretty much brainwashed for decades by the news outlet and, as a result, we automatically associates this country with warfare and extremism. And yet, it does feel like a wasted land and, if we also fear for a terrorist act that might actually never happen, it is something they have to face at least on a weekly basis and everyone in this country has lost someone during such attacks. To be honest, I'm not sure if it was a great idea to split the movie into 2 and I think they should have focused either on this bus driver or on these two young boys (personally, I would have put my money on the bus driver who was complexer). Futhermore, the gimmick to have the characters telling their dreams was used too often and it felt like a failed attempt to add some lyricism. Anyway, even if it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a really interesting documentary.

Notes: It is probably the most famous movie coming from the Italian neo-realist genre and since it is such a classic, I was really glad to finally watch the damned thing. Well, the first thing that stroke me was how simple the story actually was. However, even though it was a simple tale, I was actually impressed by how damned efficient it was. Indeed, I am often amazed and even annoyed by how convoluted and far-fetched the movie plots can become in our modern movies. This movie was the proof that it does never need to be this way, that you don't have to have some annoying twist or some unbelievable action scenes to make things more entertaining. In my opinion, the combination of realism and symbolism displayed here was just great and the story was sometimes rather heartbreaking.6 years ago

Notes: Honestly, I really had a hard time with this flick. I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood when I watched it. Basically, it is an uber-romantic tale about a doomed love story and, right from the start, they make sure you won’t have any hope that they would end up together one way or the other. At first, I was worried that they would never speak to each other and I thought ‘Girl, either you’re going to talk to that man or you’re going to do something else with your life’ but, at last, they got together so there was some hope but, then, he apparently forgets about her(!) and she gets pregnant in the mean time. Since they seemed deeply in love that seemed rather far-fetched but, well. I was ok with the fact that he didn’t recognize her the 2nd time they met since they barely talked to each other when they lived in the same building but it was fairly unconvincing that he wouldn’t recognize her when he meets her a 3rd time maybe a decade later. So you see where it goes, you either love that kind of story or you don’t. Personally, I’m not a huge fan, but I have to admit it, it was still a decent watch.6 years ago
