Oklahoma! (1955)
Notes: Well, at least, Zinnemann once again impressed me with his versatility. Indeed, I had seen 6 of his movie before and this one was again completely different which was pretty neat. However, I’m afraid it was pretty much the only really interesting thing about this movie. Indeed, it was a perfect example on how much fluffy and shallow musicals can be. I mean, it starts with a fairly cute couple and while it was pretty obvious that they should be together, it took them around 150 mins to finally get married. I mean, there was barely any drama and the humor was at best cute but not exactly hilarious. So, there was nothing else resembling a plot and, instead you had a bunch of rather colorful supporting characters trying to be funny or breaking into a song every 2 mins. At least, I have to admit that the dancing and the singing were not bad. There was also some kind of ‘dream’ sequence which was intriguing, with no dialogues whatsoever, and it really stood out from the rest of the movie but everything else was borderline tedious. Anyway, even if I didn’t connect with the damned thing at all, it is still a well made musical.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it has a decent reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, it still turned out to be a decent watch. To be honest, I wasn’t not sure about the beginning. I mean, it did ” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but I thought I might as well watch it again. The first time around, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was the last movie directed by Todd Phillips that I haven’t seen so far, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I have to ” read more

Notes: Of course, at first, this flick might seem really old, there was still a very modern feeling about it which is something always inherent to the great classics. Indeed, they are timeless and remains relevant even decades after they have been made. I'm pretty sure Steven Soderbergh saw this one before making Ocean's eleven and it must have been an inspiration. Anyway, it is definitely a great mesmerizing picture. Indeed, the directing was quite amazing and the story was completely entertaining from the beginning until the end. Personally, I always had a weak spot for heist movies, but this one is just definitely from another league than the typical Hollywood features in this genre. In 2002, they did make a decent remake with Nick Nolte, called 'The Good Thief', a remake which was directed by Neil Jordan, another fine director. Of course, the original was better but, for a remake, it was not that bad at all. Anyway, it is a classic and I really loved this flick.

An average movie

“Not to be confused with the great movie directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the only reason I wanted to watch this flick was because it was Stephen Sommers's directing debut but, to be honest, I had some rather low expectations. Well, it turned out of be some kind of mix of ” read more

It was actually directed by Camille Delamarre. Luc Besson wrote and produced this movie. As usual with a Luc Besson production, the damned was pretty weak and boring. I mean, there was a few good ideas and some of the action scenes using parkour were actually pretty neat. In fact, I discovered afterwards that David Belle actually invented the disciple known as Parkour which was pretty cool so no wonder that the guy was so impressive during those scenes. Unfortunately, Besson remains a rather weak writer who keeps lifting some obvious elements from other movies. Of course, you could argue that Quentin Tarantino does exactly the same thing but, with Besson, it makes his movies so generic and tedious to watch. To make things worse, will all respect to the late Paul Walker, the guy was just a rather boring actor and he played here the same character he kept playing through most of his career.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since it is considered as a classic comedy, I was quite eager to check it out.
