The Happy Prince
chosen by Eric Notes: Well, to be honest, I actually had a rather hard time to really care for this flick. I mean, I always had a weak spot for Rupert Everett who was basically born to play this character and Oscar Wilde was one of the wittiest writers that ever lived so the whole thing definitely had some potential. In my opinion, the biggest mistake they made was to focus on the last years of Oscar Wilde's life and I still wonder why the makers thought they should focus on this specific time period. I mean, after William Shakespeare, Wilde must have been the most famous English writer that ever lived but, at the time, the guy had stopped to write and, instead, was basically drinking himself to death which was hardly entertaining to behold. In fact, instead of feeling sorry for Wilde, this movie had actually the reverse effect on me as I felt slightly mad at him because he could have lived in France with a low profile, trying to write some more but, apparently, he basically gave up and slowly killed himself which was obviously a huge waste. Alpha And Omega
Note Well, eventually, in spite of my already low expectations, it managed to be even worse than I expected and I would go even further and say that it was probably one of the worst animated features I have ever seen. Seriously, that they ended up releasing a whole bunch of sequels afterwards is beyond me. First of all, the damned thing was just terribly ugly and, in this area, the whole thing was already seriously pathetic. Then, they came up with a lame plot involving different kinds of wolves who were not supposed to mate and the whole concept was just so boring and generic. It was also the kind of movies where half of the animals were acting like some actual wild animals, growling and such while the other half was able to talk to each other, use a tree trunk as a sled or even play some golf and such weird and nonsensical separation between the animals is something that you will often see in such lazy animated features. Since the whole thing was just so damned predictable, they also had to fill the running time with some rather random scenes which didn't provide any improvement whatsoever.

An average movie

“Even though I have never been a huge fan of this franchise, since I kept hearing some really positive things about this movie (some critics even called it the best action flick released during the last 10 years), I was really eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I thought it was eventually a d” read more

Vertigo (1958)
Notes: I have always been a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and this has always been my favorite movie of his. Basically, the whole thing looked amazing and I have never seen such a spellbinding progression in a thriller. Through the whole thing, you can’t help wonder what is going on with this mysterious woman and like James Stewart, you are pretty much getting obsessed with this lady. The other thing I loved about this flick is how well developed the main character was. Indeed, it was probably the most messed up lead character provided by Hitchcock through his whole career. Between his vertigo issues and his obsessions with the ladies, the guy was far from your usual perfect heroes. Unsurprisingly, like many other great movies, it was a flop when it was released, financially and critically, and it was a huge disappointment for Hitchcock. As far as I'm concerned, the only minor flaw was that they could have removed the flashback revealing the whole scheme. In my opinion, it would have been even better if we discovered the truth at the same time with the same character but it wasn’t a big deal.

“I already saw this movie but, for some reasons, I wanted to check it out again, probably because I have a weak spot for Charlize Theron. Well, I have noticed that my review after watching the movie the first time around was rather harsh but I do think that it was actually an intriguing story. Unfort” read more

Cairo Station
Notes: I have to admit that it was only when the film started that I discovered that it was actually directed by Youssef Chahine, the great Egyptian director. In fact, I have to admit I have seen only one of his movies and it was more than 20 years ago so it was really neat to rediscover this master, especially since this movie is considered as his magnum opus. And, indeed, the damned thing was really intriguing. Basically, you spend one single day at the Central Station in Cairo with a multitude of colourful characters and Chahine definitely didn’t sugarcoat their living conditions, that’s for sure. Still, most of the people working there remained fairly cheerful so there was a fine balance between dark and grim realism (reinforced by the black and white cinematography) and the light banter between the characters. However, there was a shift in the tone, I’m not sure if it was sudden during the final act or if it was a slow progression, I should rewatch it to be completely sure. Anyway, at some point, it became a rather nail-biting psychological thriller and I wonder if we will ever see a Hollywood production showing so much compassion towards a psychopath. Apparently, the Egyptian audience hated the damned thing so much when it was released and, eventually, it is not surprising that something so dark would be ban for 20 years in Egypt.
