An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but I have seen all the previous installments in this franchise, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I have to admit that I always had a weak spot for 'Ice Age'. Indeed, it was a nice little animated feature and it mostly worked” read more

Ben-Hur
Notes: After all these years, it remains such an entertaining epic, even if it takes hours to finally reach the finish line. Nowadays, almost 60 years after this movie was released, you can see that it was actually seriously ahead of its time and preceded all the huge blockbusters which are currently ruling the box-office. It was also rather interesting that at least half of the storyline in 'Gladiator', a seriously overrated 'classic' in my opinion, was pretty much lifted from this movie. Anyway, it is such a strong story with some tragedy, some romance, some impressive action scenes (the legendary chariot scene remains after all these years easily one of the best action scenes ever displayed), some historical elements and they even managed to squeeze a biblical tale in the mix. In fact, the scope was so huge that it might better work if it was developed as a TV-show, especially nowadays, since the quality of our current TV-shows is pretty much exceeding the quality of what you get to see in the movie theaters. Anyway, even if it was maybe not completely flawless, it is still a great classic.

The Death of Stalin
chosen by Ietje Notes: Eventually, I really enjoyed the damned thing and it turned out to be one of the most hilarious movies I have seen so far with the film club. Indeed, it has been years since I have seen such a sharp dark comedy and the jokes were just constantly spot-on. What also made this movie worked was the fact that it was based on some historical events and, through the whole thing, you keep wondering if it all really happened this way. Well, as a matter if fact, it was apparently historically fairly accurate as, for example, Beria was indeed a real notorious sexual predator and Vasili Stalin was such an alcoholic that he died at only 40 years old. Still, even though it was really funny and it gave a chilling vision of the Soviet Union history, it was pretty much a big farce but not much more than that in my opinion. It mostly had to do with the fact that they never focused on one character so none of them was really developed. The best example would be the pianist who showed up for only 2 or 3 scenes to constantly say that she hates Stalin. As a result, almost all the characters were limited as one-note jokes and you never get the opportunity to learn or care about them. Still, the damned thing was just so entertaining and it has been a while since I have seen such a fun dark comedy. (Jul. 2018)

“To be honest, since this movie has a rather lame reputation, I wasn't expecting much but since I have a weak spot for Elizabeth Banks, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be indeed pretty embarrassing, especially for Banks. I mean, she is actually a really s” read more

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Notes: Basically, it is actually a really simple story but it was still completely spellbinding and I thought it was pretty awesome to behold. In my opinion, this movie is pretty much the proof that you can make a movie without any explosions, shootings, CGI or whatsover but still remain compulsively watchable. Not so long ago, I saw ‘Witness for the Prosection’, another classic courtroom drama made in the 50’s and while I really enjoyed this movie as well, there was a very far-fetched twist towards the end which was rather underwhelming. Fortunately, there was no such gimmicks in the flick. Indeed, I believe it is one of the most straightforward thriller ever made and therefore, you don’t get the usual BS involved in this genre which resulted in a much more rewarding experience. Of course, you could argue that James Stewart was basically playing his typical righteous guy but it didn’t bother me whatsoever. Eventually, it is an impressive classic which completely deserves its reputation.

Shadows (1959)
Notes: I have seen this movie but it was ages ago and, to be honest, I don’t remember much about it and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Basically, even though John Cassavetes was fairly famous in the 70’s as an actor in fact, pretty much like Orson Welles, the guy actually took most of his acting jobs only to finance his directing efforts. Well, this movie was Cassavetes’s directing effort and, even though it has a decent reputation, it actually pretty obscure and definitely doesn’t have the status of ‘A Woman Under the Influence’, probably his most famous movie (which I still haven’t watched as a matter of fact), but it was still a decent watch. Anyway, it is considered to be a rather experimental, even jazzy, feature and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what this movie was actually about but since it was on Netflix and since the ratings were (for once for a Netflix original production) pretty decent, I thought I might as well check it out. The World of Apu
Notes: I really enjoyed the mood, at least, at first. Indeed, it was so refreshing to see a main character who was poor, who even had nothing but who still seemed to be quite happy and even cheerful. Basically, we have been so conditioned to think that, if we can’t buy everything we desire, we will feel automatically miserable and I loved how this movie really challenged this way of thinking. When he got married, the movie became even better. Sure, their union was really unlikely and, yet, they made such a sweet couple. Indeed, even if they had nothing, they still felt a deep connection and I thought that Soumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore had a great chemistry (even if Tagore was only 14 years old at the time which was slightly creepy). Eventually, it’s too bad that they kind of lost me when Aparnad died and, to be honest, I didn’t care much for this dramatic turn of events. Basically, in my opinion, it really broke the mood of this movie. Indeed, after that, the main character was constantly roaming with a really grim and depressed demeanor which was hardly rewarding for the viewers, at least, as far as I was concerned. Of course, he was eventually reunited with his son but he was still only a shadow of himself and I thought it was rather frustrating, especially compared to the rest of the movie which was much more compelling. Still, even if I wasn’t completely sold, it was definitely a really interesting watch though.

“Well, after watching some movies for more than 25 years, to be honest, I have never seen anything like this before. “To be honest, it seemed to be a rather obscure adaptation of a Stephen King book (it was apparently a flop when it was released) but since it was directed by George A.
