Notes: I have to admit that I have never read Alexandre Dumasās famous book. However, I did watch Kevin Reynoldās adaptation but it was years ago and, to be honest, I didnāt remember much about it. Anyway, it is definitely a classic tale and, from all the numerous adaptations that had been delivered so far, it is usually considered as the best one. Well, to be honest, I still had some mixed feelings about the damned thing though. I completely forgot that Napoleonās return from exile and finale demise had something to do with Edmond Dantesās tragic story but, all in all, it felt rather convoluted. Still, it does deserve its classic tale status though and, from the moment Dantes started to dig this tunnel, a task which took him a whopping 10 years, I have to admit that the damned thing did become quite entertaining after all. Concerning Robert Donat, I have noticed that the guy was praised for his work in this movie but it actually took me a while to warm up to his performance. Indeed, I thought he was terribly stiff when his character was still a naĆÆve young man. However, it was pretty neat how he played the character differently when he became the Count of Monte Cristo. Sure, he was the good guy and everything ended up well for him and the people he loved but there was something slightly psychotic and sinister about his demeanor and it was all thanks to Donatās subtle performance.10 months, 4 weeks ago

Notes: Since Iām myself an immigrant myself, son of an immigrant, Iām always fascinated by such stories, especially when it is so perfectly handled as it was definitely the case here. Indeed, with this movie, you didnāt have 1 but 3 fascinating intricate characters and, as a result, it was probably the best love triangle I have ever seen. Indeed, there was no good guy, no bad guy, only some really realistic and convincing human-beings dealing with some complex feelings. As pointed out by Arthur himself, in a weaker movie, he would have probably been the evil jealous White husband doing everything he can to prevent his wife to see her childhood crush. But, even if he was a nice guy who really loved his wife, it doesnāt mean that his situation was easy though. Concerning his wife, Nora, she was probably the character who got the most screen time and it was just so fascinating to see her wrestling with her past, her present, her culture baggage, and, eventually, you donāt get some clean clear-cut answers but thatās how it goes in real life and thatās how itās supposed to be. Concerning Jung Hae Sung, you get the feeling that he will never really manage to let go of this childhood romance but you spend enough time with him to see that, even if he cherished every minute he spent with Nora, he was so compassionate towards her, even towards her husband, it was quite inspiring to behold. Another interesting thing is that they argued that Nora made her choice to be where she ended up but, in fact, she never really made this choice in the first place. Indeed, it was her parents who took the decision to immigrate to Canada, she would have never made this choice at 12 years old, and you can only wonder what would have been her relationship with Jung Hae Sung if her parents who have decided to stay in South Korea. Anyway, the damned thing was just so fascinating and it is easily one of the best movies I have seen this year.

What was it about?
A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning.
My two cents:
To be honest, even though I did like it, I'm afraid it didn't really impress me that much after all. In fact, when I think about it, except for 'Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi' which might be the best animated feature ever made, that's actually what I felt with all Miyazaki's movies after all. Sure, as expected, the hand-drawn animation was once again just amazing and only therefore it is worth watching the damned thing. My favorite part was when the main character was rushing through the fire trying to reach his mother which was just so evocative. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I never really cared enough about the story and/or the characters involved. I mean, as far as I was concerned, it all seemed to be some rather basic Miyazaki narrative tropes after all. Indeed, it was dealing with a young character moving to a new unknown place to live and this main character was apparently struggling with his parents negligence and/or absence but these are some recurring themes that keep coming back again and again in his work. As a result, this final movie didn't seem to tackle anything really new. Concerning this fantasy world in which the main character entered at some point, to be honest, I'm afraid I lost grip on it almost immediately. I mean, where did he end up to? Who were all these strange people and creatures? What the hell was going on? Above all, and that was the main issue, did I really care? Not really, I'm afraid. Anyway, even if it didn't really work for me, it was still an intriguing animated feature though.
