Notes: I have noticed that this movie was a huge critical flop when it was released but, to be honest, it turned out to be rather hard to judge this movie for me after all. First of all, there was the fact that, after Eli Roth delivered a hard R-rated movie as it was supposed to be from the start, the studio spent more than a year completely retooling the damned thing to get a PG-13 rating which basically ruined the damned thing. The other issue was that, last weekend, I was just moving in into my new apartment and, even though I saw this movie in the afternoon, I was actually exhausted and started to really doze off during the 2nd half. Anyway, even though I have to admit that most of the story was indeed seriously derivative, it was just so cool to see Cate Blanchett, at 55 years old, playing some badass space gunslinger and, of course, she completely nailed it. Claptrap, the robot voiced by Jack Black, was also quite entertaining. Unfortunately, all the other characters involved were rather half-baked and barely entertaining. Especially for Kevin Hart, after the even more underwhelming ‘Lift’, it was the 2nd movie I have seen this year during which he tried to tackle something really different than his usual comedies and completely failed (at least, ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ did work though). My rating was probably too generous here but I don’t think I will watch the damned thing again at some point just to make sure, my love for Cate Blanchett is so strong, I think you should watch anything with her, even if it might actually be one of the worst movies of the year. 9 months, 4 weeks ago

What was it about?
Based on the best-selling videogame, this all-star action-adventure follows a ragtag team of misfits on a mission to save a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power.
My two cents:

Notes: To be honest, I think the poster pretty much spoiled the damned thing. Indeed, you get to see the young actress looking pretty badass with a sword so you know from the start that she will fight some dragon from the very beginning but, seriously, it took forever to get there. It was also another issue, the fact that they could have easily removed 30 mins of running time. I mean, for crying out loud, the poor girl actually did manage to get out off this cave at some point and, yet, they did send her back almost right away so she could save her baby sister which was, narratively speaking, pretty shabby. And yet, I always had a weak spot for minimalistic features and 2/3 of the duration was basically about Brown all alone in some cave with some massive dragon chasing her and this part was actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, she is really charismatic and the fact that she is only 20 years old was also appreciated as she was therefore pretty much the same age of her character instead of being 10 years older which is so often the case. Unfortunately, this movie didn’t have much else to offer. Indeed, the introduction, even if it did look fine, was such a bore and, to make things worse, it did feel rather unnecessary. The whole point was to see a princess fighting a dragon instead of getting rescued but nobody really cared about why she actually got there. Anyway, I think I was rather generous with my rating here.10 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it wasn’t the worst movie I have seen recently released by Netflix (I have to admit that I have watched a lot of garbage lately) but the main thing that bothered me was that the fact the whole thing felt so empty. Indeed, for a good while, in fact, for almost the whole duration, I was wondering what the damned thing was supposed to be about. Eventually, it wasn’t a great story at all and the plot turned out to be really paper thin. Concerning Alba, it turned tout that she had to basically carry the whole thing on her shoulders. In fact, none of the other characters was developed whatsoever but there is a fair chance that it was done on purpose just to make sure that nobody could upstage her in any way. The most amazing thing about this actress is that, 20 years later, she still looks so gorgeous but, even though her character was pretty badass and had some potential, I’m afraid she wasn’t really convincing though. Is there anyway that this movie could have worked at all? I do believe that a bad director can mess up a great story and a great director can turn a lame story into a great movie. In this case, they could have gone for a really raw and/or violent approach or the main character could have been more complex but this director really did nothing at all with this material which was already not interesting in the first place.10 months ago
