A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Kenneth Branagh and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Ben Stiller, I thought I might as well check it out. Basically, most of the duration was some kind of inner dialogue but it did help that Ben Stiller was pretty good here. In fact, I can’t remember the last time that I” read more

Notes: Well, it was fairly abysmal, I'm afraid. And yet, Diane Keaton and Jacki Weaver are both such fine actresses, it was actually rather impressive how much they managed to get from such poor material. I mean, the whole approach was so misguided starting with the fact that the main character was dying of cancer or the fact that she couldn't stand her new neighbour at first. These were such tired old boring narrative tropes. I mean, I could imagine a completely different story during which Martha met this new gal who was having fun with some poker games and other more or less illicit affairs. Suddenly, she would discover that, even in the twilight years of her life, life could still be an adventure. Above all, instead of being lonely, she would have a great friend from now on. Unfortunately, instead of focusing on this great couple of friends, for some reason, they decided to have them start a geriatric cheerleading club because it was exactly what this movie needed at this point, a seriously tedious and completely predictable gimmick. I mean, I have nothing against cheerleading, as a European, I have very little affinity with this 'sport' but I'm pretty sure it would have been more fun and/or more rewarding to see Martha and Sheryl running instead some illegal poker games in this retirement community. The other annoying thing with this approach was that all the other women were even less developed than the two leads, they had barely any personality whatsoever and were reduced to some caricatures just to get some cheap laughs.

Becky Sharp
Notes: It is usually considered as a major milestone in motion picture history because it was the very first movie shot in Technicolor. Well, the damned thing sure looked pretty good but I’m not sure if I really cared about the story though. In fact, it’s only when the movie started that I realized that Becky Sharp was actually the main character of ‘Vanity Fair’. Eventually, it turned out that this movie was in fact an adaptation of a play adapted from this book. Well, I’m not surprised that it was based on a play since the performances of all the actors were quite theatrical and the end-result was slightly jarring. Basically, instead of talking normally, they all seemed to be shouting their dialogues which might be appropriate for a play but it was a rather dubious choice for a movie like this one. Still, I have to admit that the cast was often quite entertaining to behold though. Concerning the story, it reminded me of ‘Barry Lyndon’ which is not surprising as Stanley Kubrick thought about for a while to adapt ‘Vanity Fair’ at some point but decided to do ‘Barry Lyndon’ instead after all. Indeed, the time period was similar and both stories were dealing with some rather selfish social climbers starting very low and reaching some improbable heights without caring much about the people around them. However, even in glorious Technicolor, there is no way this movie could compete with a Kubrick production, in any area or department you could think of.

Notes: I have to admit that I always had a weak spot for romantic comedies but, to be honest, it has been a while since I have seen a really good movie in this genre. Well, this movie was eventually the proof that you still can deliver something worthwhile in this genre. Indeed, even though it might seem simple, their masterstroke with this movie was not to go for a gimmick which is so often the case in this genre but, instead, to focus on the characters and what they were going through. Since the action took during mostly one single day, it did remind me of ‘Before Sunrise’ but they could have used some worse inspiration. Anyway, there was something really genuine about this really cute couple and I thought that they had such great chemistry from the very first moment they met each other in these toilets. Sure, during the 3rd act, there was a break-up and, at the end, they went back with each other which was quite generic but both events still made sense and it didn’t feel like some far-fetched occurrences led by a plot on auto-pilot.
