An average movie

Posted : 5 years ago on 20 October 2019 07:20 (A review of Solace)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I was instantly reminded of 'Seven' with its omnipotent serial-killer who knows everything and it made sense as this movie was, at some point, supposed to be a sequel to David Fincher's classic movie. At least, the big difference with 'Seven' was that, this time around, you actually find out why the killer knows so much and can predict pretty much anything. Anyway, even if the story was nothing really amazing, I guess it was entertaining enough and I did like the way they managed to show show Anthony Hopkins's character might see things that have or will happen. Still, I think it was a huge mistake to show Colin Farrell everywhere on the promotional material and also during the movie. Seriously, can you imagine if they would have done the same thing with Kevin Spacey in 'Seven'?Ā  Concerning the cast, they were all decent enough, except for Abbie Cornish though. Indeed, even if she was as usual really cute and charming, I'll give you that, her performance was pretty weak and not convincing whatsoever. Anyway, to conclude, I guess my rating might be generous here, but it was not bad and I think it might be worth a look, at least, if you really like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 18 October 2019 08:19 (A review of Million Dollar Arm)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie butĀ  since it was the last movie directed by Craig Gillespie that I havenā€™t seen so far andĀ since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a pretty neat story and the movie himself was not bad at all. Indeed, even if the story was rather generic and predictable, it was still quite entertaining though. In fact, it did remind me of ā€˜Jerry Maguireā€™ which wasnā€™t a bad thing though. Indeed, it was basically dealing with a sports agent working on his own, working with only one last client(s) who was his very last shot. However even if Jon Hamm was not bad, in my opinion, his role turned out to be rather thankless though. I mean, even though it made sense to portray the guy as a cold-hearted businessman, they still wanted to show him being a nice guy after all. As a result, it was rather frustrating to see almost every supporting character reminding him that he should do the right thing and to see him still being jerk again and again just to add some dramatic tensions. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 17 October 2019 08:11 (A review of Queen of Katwe)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Mira Nairā€™s work and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I didnā€™t know what it was about and it was a nice surprise to see that it was dealing with chess which is a fascinating game in my opinion. Of course, the story was after all rather generic and predictable but I still think it was uplifting and inspiring. On top of that, even though it might be expected from such a Disney production, they didnā€™t sugar-coat the damned thing at all and the life in this shanty town in Uganda seemed terribly bleak and grim as it should be. It was also refreshing that the main character was not your typical white saviour as it is unfortunately usually the case in such tales taking place in Africa. Concerning the cast, even though David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o were deservedly praised for their performances, I was actually even more impressed by the young Madina Nalwanga who played the main character. Indeed, there was so much depth in her performance and you could clearly see her character grow and evolve through the whole duration which was even more impressive since it was her first acting part. Anyway, to conclude, even if they didnā€™t come up with something really original, it was still very well done and so inspiring so it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 15 October 2019 05:09 (A review of Ben-Hur)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching this movie though. Even before it was released, the whole thing felt rather pointless, even if the classic version starring Charlton Heston came out already 60 years ago. And, indeed, it turned out to be a huge flop at the box-office and, after watching the damned thing, I don't think it really deserved a better fate, I'm afraid. At least, the whole thing did look alright but, even though it was 90 mins shorter than its illustrious predecessor, they still managed to make this classic tale seem longer and slower and, above all, much more boring. Another issue was the cast. Indeed, even if Jack Huston did look charismatic and had a few decent moments, his performance was still mostly bland and unconvincing. However, Toby Kebbell was even worse though. Seriously, he seemed rather miscast and the guy was just pretty weak making his character looking like some emo teenager. Eventually, this story, or at least, this version of this story, was mostly about the relationship between these two characters and since they were both terribly tedious, the whole thing became a real chore to watch. At least, the ending was not bad but this conclusion didn't felt earned at all, it completely clashed with the rest of the movie so it still didn't work. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was pretty much a waste of time and I don't think it is worth a look at all.

A very good movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 15 October 2019 08:57 (A review of Hereditary)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I really loved the damned thing and it turned out to be the best horror film I have seen for a very long time, no less than that. To be honest, it is definitely a slow-burn movie and, if you would expect a standard horror flick, you would be disappointed since at least 3/4 is actually a family drama. In fact, many viewers consider this movie as a drama but I can't remember the last time I watched a movie mixing these two genres that worked so well. As a result, the dramatic parts managed to ground the story and the characters and you had more time to get to know and care about them. Still, the last 30 minutes, when the horror part finally really kicked in, were just so unsettling and pretty damned f*cking scary, it was just an awesome way to conclude this tale. Sure, you could argue that the outcome was after all rather predictable but it worked just fine for me. On top of that, I just loved that, even though some stuff was explained, they didn't chew out everything freaking details and the fact that some of it remained mysterious made the whole thing even more spellbinding to behold. And, of course, Toni Collette displayed once again that she is a terribly underrated character actress as she delivered here another really strong performance. Anyway, to conclude, this movie definitely deserves its strong reputation and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 14 October 2019 08:37 (A review of Playing for Keeps)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be another really underwhelming romantic-comedy starring Gerard Butler. Indeed, not only the whole thing was poorly put together but, even worse, it was just terribly tedious to behold. Basically, the whole concept was to have this former football star suddenly becoming a coach for some young kids and, in the process, the guy would supposedly get the attention of so many apparently desperate soccer-moms. So, it seemed to be some perfect material for a raunchy comedy but, in fact, the guy was never really interested in these soccer-moms and spent most of the duration trying to reconnect with his young son. As a result, the main character was never really described as a wild party beast or as a dedicated father and this lack of commitment from the makers made the guy completely flaccid and uninteresting. However, the soccer-moms (even one dad as well) were even more poorly developed though. For example, why on earth would Catherine Zeta-Jonesā€™s character would try to get him a job if the only thing she wanted from him was to have some uncomplicated hot sex? I mean, a gorgeous woman like her would never need such a convoluted scheme to seduce a bachelor like this one. However, the icing on the cake was probably how the guy eventually managed to ruin his ex upcoming wedding. Seriously, it was just priceless to see Jessica Biel (probably the only believable character) saying that she never stopped loving him which seemed to be completely out-of-character. Anyway, to conclude, even if I have seen worse, the damned thing was still pretty weak and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 12 October 2019 07:18 (A review of Gemini Man)

Even though this movie was rather poorly received by the critics and will probably end up being a box-office flop, since I'm a huge fan of Ang Lee, I was still eager to check it out though. Well, first of all, I have to admit it, the story was rather weak and I didn't help that Rian Johnson already did something similar a few years back with 'Looper'. Indeed, even if it might have sounded cool on paper, it didn't make much sense to send the main character's clone to kill him. Basically, it would have been much more efficient to send someone with much more experience with no connection with the victim. Then, they came up with this really bogus theory that someone with the same genetical background would end up with exactly the same set of skills and abilities which was just ridiculous. Indeed, in my opinion, you mostly end up being who you are because of your social background and through experience and not because of your DNA. Anyway, the plot or lack of it was obviously not the selling point as the whole thing was in fact basically another experiment from Ang Lee to push the current movie technology and, this area, it was fortunately much more successful. On one hand, they managed to deliver a completely realistic and believable younger version of Will Smith and the end-result was just amazing. The only exception was during the final scene during which, somehow, the young Will Smith turned into something terribly ugly from a video-game released 20 years ago. I also have to add that Smith did a fine job playing these two versions of himself. And, then, the other technological breakthrough was obviously the HFR shooting.Ā  Well, to be honest, it is still not really working yet but it has some potential and Ang Lee made a rather sensible choice to use it for an action flick like this one, instead than for a drama like 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk'. However, except for the amazing chase between the two Smith''s which was one of the best action scenes I have seen in a very long time, there wasn't so many action scenes after all. To make things worse, the hand-to-hand fights were pretty much unwatchable in this format. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was an interesting experimental action flick and I believe it is worth a look but only if you would be interested in such experiment.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 11 October 2019 11:02 (A review of In the Tall Grass)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Vincenzo Nataliā€™s work and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a very minimalist horror flick but even though I have a weak spot for the genre, I still had a hard time to care about the damned thing. Indeed, a huge chunk of the duration was about a handful of characters endlessly wandering in this tall grass and constantly calling out each other and it became rather repetitive fairly quickly. Iā€™m not surprised that it was adapted from a novella and there is a fair chance that the material was not enough for a full length feature like this one. Fortunately, the whole thing became much more interesting when they started to mix up the chronology and it could have been really neat if they kept bring up more and more characters from different time periods. However, instead, they decided to randomly turn Patrick Wilsonā€™s character into a bag guy which was rather underwhelming. I mean, why him and not Tobin, for example, who also touched this ominous stone? In my opinion, it would have been more efficient to having all the characters fighting together some invisible threat (in fact, pretty much like in ā€˜Cubeā€™, Vincenzo Nataliā€™s directing debut). Eventually, as usual with Kingā€™s work, in spite of a decent mood and a few good ideas, the whole thing felt terribly far-fetched. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was watchable, it turned out to be another average and rather lazy Stephen King adaptation and I will probably completely forget about it within a couple of days.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 11 October 2019 08:32 (A review of Glory Road)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it was definitely a rather generic and predictable sport flick, it was however dealing with an amazing true tale which had a huge impact on American basketball. On top of that, some of the games displayed were really entertaining and they managed to deliver some of the best basketball scenes I have seen in a movie. Still, as usual with this kind of movies, the characters were not developed whatsoever. For example, the main reason Don Haskins decided to hire black players was not only because he believed that their huge talent was wasted but, above all, because he didnā€™t have any money to get the best white players available. However, the movie didnā€™t dig in this aspect at all and, instead, you got to see Haskins drilling orders through most of the duration. Concerning the players, it was actually even worse. For example, Bobby Joe Hill was apparently one of the most talented players in the team and, yet, he didnā€™t go pro after college but why? Eventually, the makers simply stick to the formula of the genre without taking any risk. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasnā€™t really a masterpiece, it was still a really inspiring tale and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 10 October 2019 11:04 (A review of Cold in July)

Since I kept hearing some interesting things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, it took me a while to get into this flick. Indeed, at first, it seemed to be a rather generic stalking thriller and, for a while, I was really wondering what was supposed to be so good about the damned thing. However, around the middle, they came up with some major twist which completely flipped around the whole story and, suddenly, the damned thing became so much more interesting to behold. And, then, when I was pretty much digging this new narrative direction, out of the blue, came another major twist which again changed everything. The complete unpredictability of the whole thing made it quite spellbinding and the movie definitely stood out from your average thriller. However, even if it was quite bold, it didnā€™t completely work though. Indeed, the first part was just too long and, as a result, everything else happening afterwards felt rather rushed. Furthermore, they spent a good chunk of the running time showing that the main character was torn by guilt and desperately trying to figure who was the poor guy he actually shot but, after the first twist, it was completely dropped. Same thing with Ben Russell, he went from stalking a man for allegedly killing his son to actually killing his own son within a span of 40 minutes which was intriguing but also rather far-fetched. Anyway, to conclude, even if not everything completely worked, it was still a bold thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
