A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 3 months ago on 30 July 2019 07:43 (A review of Et si on vivait tous ensemble?)

To be honest, it seemed to be a rather obscure movie but since my film-club saw it before I joined in, I was really eager to check it out. Well, first of all, it was definitely a perfect flick for our film-club and I had a big smile through the whole duration thinking about them. Then, the thing I enjoyed the most was to see this inspiring group of friends who had known each other for decades and, of course, the cast involved was pretty neat as well (Jane Fonda, Geraldine Chaplin, Guy Bedos, Pierre Richard, Claude Rich, Daniel Brühl). Still, there were a couple of things that didn’t really work though. Indeed, even though this concept of a group of friends deciding to live together to support each other was really interesting, unfortunately, the makers still felt it wasn’t enough and felt compelled to add some rather unnecessary sub-plots. I mean, as a result, even though Daniel Brühl was fine (I was really impressed by how well he spoke French), I didn’t care much for his character and, above all, his whole thesis project was just so tedious and really superfluous. There was also a rather half-baked sub-plot involving some infidelities in the group but I didn’t really see the added value except to show that one of the guys was definitely a real stud. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still really liked this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 3 months ago on 26 July 2019 08:19 (A review of Father of the Bride Part II)

I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since it was starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen ‘Father of the Bride’ so I don’t remember it very well but I don’t think it was a big deal since the concept was pretty basic. Anyway, to be honest, I didn’t care much for this sequel. I mean, it seemed to be a no-brainer that it would be about George Banks’s daughter having a baby this time but I thought this idea was rather poorly handled after all. Indeed, even though I think it should have been about how the main character handles the pregnancy, the childbirth of his daughter and the arrival of his first grandchild, the guy ended up eventually in some rather underwhelming middle-life crisis. To make things worse, they completely changed course half way through as, suddenly, his wife also got pregnant. I mean, the original concept was nothing really amazing but it was decent enough but, unfortunately, the end-result was just so scattered (for example, even the wedding planner played by Martin Short in the previous instalment suddenly became also an interior designer) . Anyway, to conclude, even though I didn’t like it much, it was still a rather harmless feelgood feature and if you like the genre, you will probably enjoy it more than I did.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 3 months ago on 22 July 2019 07:03 (A review of El reino)

Since I have always been fascinated by politics, this movie sounded really interesting to me. Well, the first thing that impressed me with this movie was how little politics these guys were involved in and how much time they spent instead running their little schemes. Eventually, in spite of a few far-fetched scenes (for example, would you open the door in the middle of the night to a perfect stranger only because he claims he is supposedly working with your father?), it was much more realistic than your average American thriller which made the whole thing much more spellbinding to behold. Concerning the main character, I never saw this actor before but he did deliver a really solid performance. I also liked the way this character was displayed as someone smart, charismatic who always gets what he wants and who has apparently no conscience whatsoever. Still, there was some major flaws in this plan though. I mean, it is pretty obvious that the guy was in full survival mode through most of the duration but his whole victim act, as pointed out in the final scene, became slowly slightly annoying and even rather pathetic. Finally, I thought it was actually rather depressing to find out that everybody at the top was apparently as corrupt as he was. Anyway, even if it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still terribly entertaining and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 20 July 2019 11:35 (A review of Suzy Q)

Even though this movie was rather obscure (I'm apparently the only one who saw it on Listal), since it was starring Carice van Houten, I still wanted to check it out. Well, it was definitely really neat to see a very young van Houten at the beginning of her career and, as a bonus, there was also an even younger Michiel Huisman, almost 20 years before they would reach an international audience thanks to 'Game of Thrones'. Concerning the movie itself, well, it was not bad and it was definitely better than your average Dutch production but, to be honest, it was still nothing really amazing though. First of all, I thought it was pretty obvious that Martin Koolhoven had been inspired by Alex van Warmerdam, probably the best Dutch film director after Paul Verhoeven. Indeed, the whole thing had the typical van Warmerdam quirky and absurd vibe but it is something tricky to handle as it gives a movie such a random feeling. In this case, even though it started with a rather light tone, it became increasingly darker. Seriously, they even threw in some incest for good measure. Eventually, what bother me the most was that I never really cared about the characters who were often rather tedious and even sometimes downright unlikeable. I mean, it is fine to focus on such ordinary characters but Koolhoven never managed to make them interesting or entertaining enough. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, if only to see the terribly talented and lovely Carice van Houten.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 19 July 2019 10:35 (A review of Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese)

Like anyone else who has a decent taste in movies, I have been anxiously waiting for ‘The Irishman’ but, suddenly, out of nowhere, Martin Scorsese released another movie and, of course, I had to watch it, especially since it was available on Netflix. To be honest, I have to admit that I did struggle a little bit to get into the damned thing. Indeed, even if I did grow up listening to his music thanks to my father, I have never been a huge fan of Bob Dylan and, to be honest, I find his aloof attitude actually slightly annoying. At least, the whole thing was really original as it was some kind of combination of a standard concert movie with a documentary but also a mockumentary. Indeed, there were apparently some fake stuff and it was slightly too bad that the whole thing with Sharon Stone properly never happened. That Jack Tanner guy also really looked familiar and that made sense because he was in fact he a fictive character played by actor Michael Murphy. As a result, everybody involved claimed that this project was something creatively amazing but, as far as I’m concerned, it did look like a mess and the mockumentary elements didn’t really help me to shake this feeling. Still, to conclude, even if I wasn’t completely blown away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Bob Dylan or in Martin Scorsese’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 17 July 2019 08:57 (A review of The Lion King)

Before this movie was released, there was a nice buzz but after reading a massively negative review on Indiewire, I became rather cautious and even slightly worried. Well, eventually, maybe this review did lower my expectations but, to be honest, I don't think it was so bad as the guy from Indiewire claimed it to be. Of course, like 90% of these Disney live-adaptations, it was still completely unnecessary and probably even more misguided than usual though. I mean, the animation looked amazing but to see some animated talking animals has always been rather annoying and when they are really photo-realistic like here, well, it is even more cringe-inducing. Concerning the story itself, I have to admit that, in spite of its massive reputation, I have never been a huge fan of the original version to start with and since this version was about 95% identical, well, I still didn't care much for it. At least, Timon and Pumbaa completely stole the show once again, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen were just pitch-perfect and I wish the whole thing would have been about them instead of these rather boring lions. Anyway, to conclude, it should turn out to be a massive hit at the box-office and I still think it is actually worth a look but don't expect anything really amazing from the damned thing.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 17 July 2019 08:52 (A review of The Wall)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I was directed by Doug Liman, I was quite eager to check it out. Like I said before, I didn’t know what this movie was about and it actually turned out to be a very minimalistic war movie with only one location and three characters. In fact, out of these three characters, one was dead fairly early on and the other one was actually a voice-over so the whole thing was pretty much a one-man show from Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Well, even though I have a weak spot for the genre, I wasn’t really impressed by this movie though. I mean, I won’t blame Taylor-Johnson, the guy once again delivered a really solid performance and I was even fairly impressed by John Cena even if he had here a rather small part. However, the concept was not bad but not much more than that, I’m afraid. Indeed, the whole idea of this Iraqi sniper fooling the US army to get some extra kills might sound cool but, in my opinion, it was rather far-fetched. Furthermore, even if you would believe that such a thing was possible, it didn’t make much sense that he would try to talk endlessly with Isaac. Seriously, what was the point? Because he was bored? The first contact made sense because, this way, he could retrieve his details but, then, he could have just left him to die. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 16 July 2019 08:23 (A review of Extract)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though the damned thing really had some potential, to be honest, it didn’t really work though. It’s too bad because, once again after ‘Office Space’, Mike Judge delivered another believable work space environment and pretty much all the characters were realistic and entertaining. Above all, I was just seriously impressed by Ben Affleck. Indeed, even though Jason Bateman was fine, he basically played his usual character whereas Affleck really went really out of his comfort zone and completely nailed it. Seriously, I think the guy easily gave here one of his best performances. Eventually, the scenes involving Bateman and Affleck were by far the best in this movie but most of the other characters worked fine as well, except for Mila Kunis’s character though. Indeed, in my opinion, the only real issue with this movie was concerning this girl. I mean, I don’t blame Kunis, she was lovely as usual and she did what she could but her con artist didn’t belong in this tale at all and this character completely derailed the whole thing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent comedy and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 14 July 2019 08:11 (A review of Vice)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Bruce Willis, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though this movie seems to have a rather lame reputation, at least, it had a rather decent concept, which is more than what you usual get with such dreadful direct-to-DVD  feature starring Bruce Willis. Still, it doesn't mean that it was actually good though. Indeed, beside a concept which was pretty much a mix of 'Blade Runner' with 'The Purge', this movie had really nothing else to offer, at least, nothing good. First of all, the tech looked cheap and unconvincing but that was hardly the biggest issue with this flick. Indeed, there wasn't really a main character but about 3 or 4 really half-baked characters and, to make things worse, all the actors involved gave some rather weak performances. Finally, even though the concept did have some potential, it wasn't properly developed at all. Indeed, as displayed most brilliantly in 'Blade Runner', the most interesting thing about such a movie dealing with such advanced AI is the reflection on what makes us human and the mental struggle going through such a conscious artificial being. Well, obviously, this movie didn't care about this at all and, instead, they gave us some really generic and boring action scenes. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating, the damned thing was actually rather weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 4 months ago on 12 July 2019 10:12 (A review of A Dog's Purpose)

To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Lasse Hallström’s work, I thought I might as well check it out, especially since it was available on Netflix. First of all, seriously, when was the last time the Swedish director did deliver something really interesting? Anyway, even though this movie was apparently rather successful at the box-office, I didn’t really care about the damned thing, I’m afraid. Basically, it was a rather peculiar concept dealing with a dog going through 4 reincarnations which was already weird enough but, to make things even more convoluted, the dog actually remembered everything that happened in his previous lives. Eventually, it all depends if you will like this idea or not but, at least, it wasn’t dealing with some talking dogs which was a relief. In fact, if they would have focused on only 2 dogs (Bailey and Buddy), it would have worked so much better because all the other lives/reincarnations were rather half-baked and uninteresting. To be honest, even this story was actually too bland but, a least, Ethan, especially as a boy and a teenager, had a really genuine touching bond with his dog and that’s when the movie displayed some potential. Anyway, to conclude, maybe if you are really into this kind of movies, you might end up enjoying it more than I did but, as far as I was concerned, the damned thing was not really worth a look.
