An average movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 17 April 2018 09:34 (A review of The Huntsman: Winter's War)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since there was a really nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, eventually, I'm not surprised at all that it turned out to be a flop at the box-office. Indeed, the damned thing turned out to be a perfect example of why some sequels are justĀ seriously misguided. In fact, the whole thing actually started as a prequel to 'Snow White and the Huntsman', but, after about 20 minutes, it suddenly became a sequel and this switch was just really awkward. In this case, why didn't they bring back Kristen Stewart to shoot at least a cameo? To make things worse, the whole thing was just really derivative with the Ice queen obviously inspired by 'Frozen' and the magic mirror who worked pretty much exactly like the ring in 'The Lord of the Rings'. At least, the whole thing looked decent enough and it is not very often that you get to see 3 amazing actresses like Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain all together in the same movie. It's just too bad they got involved in such a rather average blockbuster like this one. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating here but I guess the damned thing was still watchable though.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 16 April 2018 09:24 (A review of The Bad Batch)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, like most other Netflix original films, the whole thing turned out to be half-baked, I'm afraid. It's too bad because this concept of a huge desert turned into some kind of prison definitely had some potential but there was just too many things that didn't make much sense. First of all, let's talk about the obvious, since they were in a desert, how did they get gas, water, electricity, drugs, food, weapons, ammo,...? Then, even though it seemed to make sense that some would become cannibal, why would they bother take such drastic measures since the community nearby seemed to manage to get some food fairly easily? Finally, what really ruined the whole thing for me was the ending. Indeed, after the main character lost her leg and her arm to this group of cannibals, she actually falls in love with one of them, not before she actually killed the mother of his child in front of the kid herself. I mean, seriously?!? I don't remember the last time I saw such a completely unconvincing romance. The only possible logic coming from this movie could be, that since Suki Waterhouse and Jason Momoa are both attractive, they should definitely fall for each other, even if it didn't make any sense with the history and the background of their respective characters. It's a shame because I really liked the idea of the main character losing her limbs right from the beginning but I would need more than just some hipster soundtrack to cover up all this nonsense.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 15 April 2018 06:23 (A review of God's Own Country)

To be honest, I had never heard of this movie and I really had no idea what to expect from it. Eventually, even though I did like it, I actually had a hard time to connect with this story. Basically, the main issue I had was that it was such a generic love story. Indeed, from the moment these two young men meet each other, they went through a succession of events which was just way too predictable for my taste. The only surprising thing was that they didn't have to face some homophobia which was something you might expect in the remote countryside of England. My guess is that the director who came from Yorkshire where the movie was shot believes that the people living down there don't really care about what you do in your bedroom as long as you act normally in public. Anyway, the directing was decent enough, I really wonder what Francis Lee will do after this solid directing debut, and the actors playing this cute couple both delivered some really good performances. To conclude, even if it didn't blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 15 April 2018 07:48 (A review of Shame)

Even though I have seen more than 6000 movies, I have to admit that I have seen only maybe 2 movies directed by Ingmar Bergman. The last one I saw from this director was maybe a decade ago and since this movie was on the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list, I was really eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, as usual with this director, I really had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. In this case, what mostly made this movie both alienating but at same time really intriguing was the total lack of context. Indeed, there was no real introduction, no explanation about when or where it was taking place or what was exactly going on which was sometimes rather frustrating, especially in my case, as I usually avoid the trailer and don't read the synopsis before watching a movie. And, yet, there was still something quite spellbinding about the damned thing. During a few scenes, the characters talked about their dreams and this lack of contect did create a dream-like vibe, or maybe I should I say a nightmarish vibe. Futhermore, the whole thing gave an interesting look on how far people would go in order they survive and it is especially neat when you think that this movie was made 50 years before 'The Walking Dead'. Concerning Max von Sydow, he was pretty good but he had a rather thankless part and, eventually, I was above all impressed by Liv Ullmann. Indeed, it was the first movie I saw with this actress, she gave a really strong performance and I will definitely try to check the other movies she made with Bergman. Anyway, to conclude, even though I wasn't completely sold, it was still a good movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Ingmar Bergman's work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 13 April 2018 09:02 (A review of Parental Guidance)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Marisa Tomei and since this movie was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be even weaker than I expected. Indeed, not only the concept was just really weak and generic but, to make things worse, all the characters were rather annoying. Seriously, the parents, the grandparents and the children were just rather cringe-inducing to behold. I mean, if the whole thing would have been actually realistic and the fact that I'm myself a parent made it even harder to swallow. It's really one of these case when they tackled an interesting subject, something I could definitely relate to (indeed, myĀ  parents live really far away and see my kids only a couple of times every year), but they chose a completely wrong approach. Indeed, with a slightly darker tone, it could have been interesting but, instead, they just went for the cheap laughs and jokes. At least, it became slightly better during the 3rd act but it was just too late, I'm afraid. Anyway, to conclude, I was probably generous with my rating here, it was just a really weak comedy and IĀ  don't think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 13 April 2018 07:27 (A review of Money Monster)

Even though this movie didn’t get much love when it was released, since I always had a weak spot for Jodie Foster’s work, I was still eager to check it out. On top of that, the concept was pretty cool and she was working with George Clooney and Julia Roberts, 2 of the biggest movie stars in the world. Well, even though the whole thing definitely had some potential , it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, I’m afraid. First of all, the concept was obviously pretty limited and I was curious to see how Foster would manage to make it still interesting and challenging. Well, I think it is pretty obvious that they went for a modern version of ā€˜Dog Day Afternoon’ which was actually a good idea but the end-result was just too generic. Another thing that bothered me was that the characters were all rather boring and uninteresting. The only exception was George Clooney’s character who had some potential but even this character was ruined because somehow, through the duration, this guy completely changed from an arrogant bastard to some kind of hero which was just really disappointing. Finally, in the 3rd act, the whole thing became way too much theatrical. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was not bad and even though it is probably Jodie Foster’s weakest directing effort so far, it is still worth a look but there is no doubt that the whole thing felt like a missed opportunity.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 12 April 2018 07:56 (A review of Sleuth (1972))

It is another movie I wanted to see for so many years but, eventually, it was definitely worth the wait. In fact, I first saw the remake directed by Kenneth Branagh about 7 years ago and, even though this remake didn’t get much love, I thought it was a decent watch. Well, I understand now why most of the viewers didn’t care for Branagh's version though since this classic was indeed miles better. I’m also glad that I saw this remake such a long time ago because, this way, I didn’t remember most of the crucial details. However, I wish I did see the damned thing with some subtitles as the dialogues were amazing but sometimes slightly difficult to follow, especially since English is not my mother-tongue. Anyway, the whole thing was just fascinating with 2 great (or should I say 3) performances from Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine who were both at the top of their game. The only minor issue I had was that, while Michael Caine looked amazing as Inspector Doppler, I thought he didn’t conceal enough his voice and it was pretty easy to recognize him after all but it wasn’t a big deal. Eventually, even though you spend more than 2 hours with only 2 actors in one single location, it was yet just so fascinating and spellbinding to behold. Anyway, to conclude, I really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 10 April 2018 10:29 (A review of Amanda Knox)

Well, it was the week-end and it didn’t feel like watching another fiction so I decided to check this documentary on Netflix. Eventually, it was pretty good but, to be honest, I expected it to be more ambiguous. Indeed, the point of the whole thing was to find out for the viewers if they would believe that Amanda Knox has brutally killed her roommate or not. Well, in my opinion, it was obvious that she was innocent pretty much from the very beginning. For example, when the body was discovered, Giuliano Mignini, the prosecutor, argues that a man would never cover a victim’s body and that only a woman would do that which was just a ridiculous and even rather pathetic argument. Then, he kept arguing that Amanda Knox had an odd behaviour which was in fact never ever displayed or actually proven. I mean, for example, according to him, it was strange that she couldn’t keep up her story straight but what you would you expect from a 20 yeard old student who suddenly had to go through hours of aggressive interrogation from the police forces? Maybe for the first hours you would be able to tell the truth but, at some point, you would say whatever the police would want to hear just to make them stop. Eventually, her guilt was mostly based on some obsession from the police forces and the media frenzy around this case than actual evidence. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was slightly disappointing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 10 April 2018 09:27 (A review of Oasis: Supersonic)

To be honest, I have never been a fan of Oasis but it was the week-end and it didn’t feel like watching another fiction so I decided to check this documentary on Netflix. Well, to be honest, I’m rather surprised by the high ratings this movie has received on this website and on IMDb.Ā  Sure, I remember the 90’s when their first 2 CDs came out and, at the time, Oasis was easily the biggest British band around so it was pretty neat to go back in time. As a result, it was interesting but I didn’t think it was anything really ground-breaking or fascinating. For example, the main point was to show how, right from the start, the Gallagher brothers didn’t get along at all but, if you grew up in the 90’s like me, it was common knowledge even if you were not a huge fan of the band. Another thing that bothered me was the fact that they implied that, after Knebworth, the band will soon explode but, in fact, they kept on going for more than a decade afterwards which is in fact more than many other bands. Anyway, to conclude, even though I thought it was rather disappointing, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in this band.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 7 years ago on 9 April 2018 09:25 (A review of Rolling Thunder)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Tommy Lee Jones, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, Jones had only a rather small part and showed up only for a couple of scenes. Indeed, William Devane was actually playing the lead but he was actually pretty good. Anyway, even though this movie might seem to be another revenge thriller (it was definitely sold as one), it was actually more about PTSD and, in my opinion, it was actually one of the better movies I have seen about the subject. Indeed, they basically followed the rules of the genre but the tone was much darker and bleaker than usual. For example, while the main character was being assaulted, I couldn't stop thinking about what would happen if his wife and kid would come home and I do believe that the guy was pretty much a ticking bomb looking for any excuse to kill a bunch of people. I mean, during the final scene, he and his buddy killed way more people than the people that actually assaulted him and it seems that, for them, to be in such war-like situation was the only way to be functional. Anyway, to conclude, even though not everything completely worked, it was still a solid thriller and it is definitely worth a look.
