(A review of
Gaga: Five Foot Two)
To be honest, I have never been really interested in Lady Gaga and I was surprised when my wife said she wanted to watch this documentary since she never mentioned this singer before. The reason why she wanted to watch the damned thing was because Lady Gaga had cancelled her last concert tour because she was suffering of fibromyalgia, a disease my wife has been dealing with for decades. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but, to be honest, not much more than that. I mean, it was pretty neat to see her while working on her last record and, even though I still don't care much about her music, she definitely has some skills. Furthermore, I think it is rather sad that she spent so many years building up this over-the-top image, obviously only to get more attention and this movie displayed that she was finally ready to put the focus more on her music and her actual work than in her extravagant public image. Still, eventually, I didn't really have the feeling that I learned so much about her after all. Anyway, to conclude, all in all, it was not bad and I guess it is worth a look but probably only if you are really interested in this singer.Ā

(A review of
Coal Miner's Daughter)
To be honest, I have to admit that I had actually never heard of Loretta Lynn before watching this movie but since this movie seemed to have a pretty decent reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, even though I'm not a huge fan of Country music, the songs written by Loretta Lynn were really good and it was quite impressive that Sissi Spacek did her own singing, even live for most of the scenes. And, of course, it was an incredible story, even if some elements were not completely true (for example, Loretta Lynn herself apparently lied for decades about her age and she was in fact sixteen years old when she got married). Still, even if the whole thing was well made and the actors involved were all pretty good, especially Spacek who won an Academy Award for her performance, it was still a fairly straightforward music biopic. Indeed, especially from the moment she was discovered and became famous, it became seriously generic and the whole thing went into auto-pilot until the very end. I was also surprised that there was no comment at the end telling us what happened during the following years in her life (basically, she made a successful come-back and remained one of the biggest Country singers). Anyway, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

IT)
In fact, I had planned for quite some time to watch the remake in the movie theater but, at the very last moment, Nick, my step-son, chickened out and we went to see something else after all. Instead, I decided to watch this first version and, I must admit it, it really deserves its solid reputation. Indeed, usually, I have a hard time to care about Stephen King's fantastic and horror stories, in fact, I even thought that 'The Green Mile' was rather overrated. However, this was absolutely a great story, easily one of King's best, Ā and I might even consider reading the book at some point. Unfortunately, even if the story itself was pretty awesome, on the other hand, the directing was only merely adequate, I'm afraid. Basically, it was not really much better than these countless average horror movies they made in the 80's and you can only wonder what such great directors like Stanley Kubrick or Frank Darabont could have done with this material. Concerning the acting, well, it was actually even worse. Indeed, except for Jonathan Brandis and Seth Green who were not bad, all the kids were rather weak but their grown-up versions were actually even worse. Indeed, they were all just so uncharismatic and their performances were all rather wooden and completely forgettable. Of course, it doesn't include Tim Curry who was just downright impressive and he delivered here one of the most unforgettable bad guys ever. Anyway, to conclude, even if Ā not everything did work in this movie, it was still a fascinating tale and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Since I have a weak spot for Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard and since this movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, I actually had a hard time to really care about the damned thing. I mean, I did like the 1st act in Casablanca but it was unfortunately slightly ruined by the fact that Brad Pitt wasn't convincing at all as a French native speaker. Sure, they tried to explain his poor accent with the fact that his character was Canadian but this explanation was rather weak. I mean, a top spy, at this level of the game, should show up with an almost flawless accent. Then, the rest of the movie was not bad but still nothing really amazing. I mean, let's assume that Marianne BeausĆ©jour was indeed a German spy, how the hell did she get her info? Indeed, at this point, she had become a housewife, without any direct access to some sensitive information, and it was rather unlikely that Max Vartan would bring some classified files at home or discuss the details of his missions at the dinner table. Finally, even though Brad Pitt was fine as an experienced cool top spy, he wasn't really amazing as a man falling deeply in love, ready to risk everything for the love of his life. On the other hand, Marion Cotillard was once again quite impressive and she was pretty much pitch-perfect through the whole thing. Anyway, even if the whole thing didn't really work for me, it was still rather well made and fairly entertaining and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
The Prince)
I wasnāt expecting much from the damned thing but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought it might as well check it out. Well, from all the lame direct-to-DVD featuresĀ starring Bruce WillisĀ I have seen recently, this must have been the worst one so far. As usual, Willis was displayed prominently on the promotional material and, as usual, he wasnāt even playing the lead character but that wasnāt even the biggest problem with this movie. Indeed, the biggest issue was that the story was just so generic and tedious. Basically, it was some kind of rip-off of such movies like āThe Equalizerā or āJohn Wickā about an average guy who seems to have a dark past and happens to be an actual killing machine. Well, I have never been a huge fan of the genre and to see such a weak movie in this genre was just terribly tedious. To be honest, Iām trying to think if there was anything that really worked in this movie but, no, I canāt think of any redeeming feature. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was just a waste of time and you should definitely avoid it, even if you are a big fan of Bruce Willis.Ā

(A review of
Grimm)
After āKlein Teunā, Alex van Warmerdam took his time and, 5 years later, he finally came up with a new directing effort but, unfortunately, it turned out to be his weakest movie so far, Iām afraid. At least, the DVD I watched was of much better quality than the DVDs I saw for his previous movies and it was pretty neat that half of the movie was taking place outside of the Netherlands which was a first for van Warmerdam. Unfortunately,Ā that was pretty much the only things I enjoyed about this movie. Eventually, what bothered me the most were the huge ellipses that they would make. For example, at some point, Maria and Jacob end up in some town and, then, completely out of the blue, they seemed to be living in some homeless tent under a bridge without any explanation whatsoever. How the hell did they end up there? Then, later on, they decide to go to Spain with their scooter and, within minutes, they end up in Spain. That was something that kept occurring throughout the whole thing and I thought it was just so lazy and annoying. On top of that, I never really cared about the story or the characters involved. In fact, I discovered afterwards that Alex van Warmerdam hated the original cut of this film and he had since completely rejected this flick. More than 15 years later, he has actually released a new director's cut and it would be interesting to check it out at some point since this theatrical version had been actually rather underwhelming. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was the most disappointing movie delivered by this director so far, I still though it was a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially, if you are interested in Alex van Warmerdamās work.Ā

(A review of
Okja)
To be honest, when I noticed that this movie was dealing with some kind of mythical magical beast, I had my doubts about the damned thing but since I have seen almost all the movies directed by Bong Joon Ho and since this movie was directly available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, as usual with this director, it ended up being a mix of many different things such as a family feature, some science-fiction, some social commentary, some comedy,... and, honestly, even though this mix was interesting, I can't say I was really blown away. I mean, it was well made, some scenes were even rather impressive visually speaking but I think it was just too unfocused for my taste. For example, there were many interesting characters played by a really solid cast but, in fact, none of them was really properly developed, except maybe Mija, the main character. It was also rather tricky to mix so many different elements. On one hand, I did like how they displayed that most big corporations will claim that their products are healthy, organic, and other great things when it is in fact some complete PR bullshit (McDonald's is a great example for how they managed to change their image in a few years when, in fact, they are selling exactly the same products). Later on, I also enjoyed this moment when the other Mirando sister points out that people actually don't really care about what you sell them, as long as it is really cheap, which is also really true. So, they made some interesting points but, then, every 5 minutes, you would have Mija claiming that she didn't care at all about all this, that the only thing she wanted was to have her pet back. I mean, if the main character didn't care about all this, what should we? So, the movie kept going back and forth between all these interesting ideas but the end-result was never really convincing. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't completely work for me, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in this director.Ā

(A review of
Gambler)
I wasnāt really planning to watch this movie but since it was given as a bonus with my Pusher trilogy DVD box, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, the interesting thing about this movie was that, even though the outcome was actually really positive (Nicolas Winding Refn indeed managed to make both āPusher IIā and āPusher IIIā which turned out to be some critical and commercial success), it was still a really sad story. Indeed, for about 2 years Winding Refn and his wife had to live under a huge amount of pressure because they were so much in debts. Furthermore, even though āPusher IIā and āPusher IIIā were both some pretty cool movies, it turns out that the Danish director never really wanted to make them in the first place but he had to, otherwise, it would have been pretty much the end of his career. Finally, it shows that making a movie can be a gruelling process, even for one of the most highly regarded directors in Denmark. Eventually, it is pretty obvious that a director spends most of his time dealing with a variety of things which donāt have much to do with actually directing a movie. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Nicolas Winding Refnās work.Ā

(A review of
A Fantastic Woman)
Well, even though (almost) everyone else in my film club really loved this movie, to be honest, I had actually a hard time to really get into the damned thing. I mean, I have to admit it, it was a good movie, especially thanks to a really amazing performance by Daniela Vega who completely deserved the praises she has received. Still, I never really felt blown away by the whole thing. The first thing that bothered me was the fact that the main character ended up in a situation with such extreme circumstances. Indeed, even though she could have been involved with a young boy, she was with a man at last 30 years older than her who had lived before her, as far as I could see, a very average hetero life with a wife with at least 2 kids, one older than his new lover and one around 7 years old. Then, another thing that bothered me was how the main character was presented as someone apparently flawless (in fact, she was even fantastic according to the title) while the rest of the world seemed to be ignorant, intolerant and sometimes even downright mean to her. Basically, everything was told only from her point of view which felt really limited and I think it would have been more interesting if she would have displayed some flaws. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn't completely work for me, it was still a solid drama it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
She's Gotta Have It)
Since I always had a weak spot for Spike Lee's work, of course, I was really eager to check his directing debut. Eventually, what I liked the most was the fact it was so much lighter than his usual work which was just so refreshing. Then, even though it was sometimes slightly pretentious, which was rather expected from a directing debut, I really liked the directing with some neat black-and-white photography. Still, even though Tracy Camilla Johns was quite gorgeous and seriously charismatic, it was still difficult to root for this character who had some massive commitment issues.Ā Indeed, it is interesting to point that, so far in his career, Spike Lee has made only 2 movies with a female main character, this one dealing with a woman who sleeps pretty much with everybody and 'Girl 6' who was dealing with a woman becoming a phone-sex operator. Furthermore, from her 3 lovers, even though they were all completely different, there were 2 of them (Greer Childs and Mars Blackmon) that she could have dropped without any hesitation and there was no real valid reason for her to keep seeing them. Still, even if the material didn't completely work, it was pretty neat how Spike Lee managed to deliver some complex and flawed characters. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was definitely not a masterpiece, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth, especially if you are interested inĀ Spike Lee's work.Ā
