An average movie

Posted : 8 years ago on 23 May 2017 08:55 (A review of One from the Heart)

Since I’m a big fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s work, I was really eager to check this movie and it took me many years to finally watch the damned thing. Well, I wish I could say it was worth the wait but, unfortunately, it turned out to be rather underwhelming. I don’t know, it seems that after ruling the 70’s by making back-to-back 4 masterpieces, Coppola didn’t think he should try so hard this time around. Actually, even though it seemed to be a rather simple movie, it eventually cost 10 times more than what was planned because, for some reasons, Coppola decided to shot the whole thing on stages and decided also to make some expensive technical experimentations. In fact, the guy lost so much money on this movie that it completely derailed his career and, as a result, all the movies he would make during the next 20 years, would be done to pay off the debts he made during the production of this movie. Anyway, it turned out to be something more jazzy and experimental than his previous movies but even though it wasn’t a complete failure, I still had a hard time to care about the damned thing. In fact, even though this movie was apparently inspired by the musicals of the 40’s and 50’s, it reminded me more of Fellini’s work with its rather chaoctic structure. However, if Fellini was able to create some masterpieces in this genre, Coppola didn’t fare so well, I’m afraid. The biggest issue I had was that it must have been the most boring couple I have ever seen. Indeed, Teri Garr looked terribly plain but, at least, she did have a little something but, on the other hand, Frederic Forrest was easily one of the least charismatic lead actors I have ever seen. Anyway, this couple was just cringe-inducing and the movie would have been much more interesting if they simply dropped them and focused instead on Raul Julia and Nastassja Kinski who seemed much more compelling. To conclude, I think I have been rather generous with my rating here but I guess it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in Francis Ford Coppola’s work.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 20 May 2017 08:16 (A review of Nightcrawler)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was really eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it really deserved its solid reputation and it has been a while since I saw such a strong thriller. Indeed, it was basically a fascinating character study about a massive sociopath living Ā in a dark and nihilistic world. Eventually, the scariest thing was not Louis Bloom himself but the fact that the whole thing was just so damned realistic. Indeed, I was worried that, at some point, the main character would go even further and would kill someone just to get a good story but, fortunately, they never made this mistake. The interesting thing is that many people thought that Bloom was despicable but, to be honest, the guy didn't really bother me so much. Basically, he just did his job and nobody forced the TV station to buy his videos and nobody forced the audience to watch them afterwards. His job was however despicable, that's for sure, and our world, apparently craving for these kind of images, is pretty sick and it is definitely one of the reasons why I barely watch the news nowadays. Of course, I shouldn't forget to mention that Jake Gyllenhaal was once again really impressive in this movie. To conclude, it was a terrific directing debut for Dan Gilroy and the damned thing is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 19 May 2017 10:31 (A review of Alien: Covenant)

Even though I wasn't really expecting a masterpiece, at least, I hoped this movie would be an improvement on 'Prometheus'. Unfortunately, Ā I turned out to be even more underwhelming and I would go as far as saying that it is the weakest installment in this franchise Ā (of course, without counting the 'Alien vs Predator' crap). Indeed, if one of the biggest issues with 'Prometheus' was probably the fact that it was too ambitious, this time, it was the other way around as Ridley Scott didn't even really try. Seriously, the guy came up with the most generic plot you could think of and pretty much all the new ideas introduced in the previous movie were basically thrown out of the window and the only thing that remained was the fact that David was apparently a really psychotic and megalomaniac robot. The other thing that bothered me was the fact that the crew was actually so boring and uncharismatic. Seriously, was Katherine Waterston really supposed to replace Sigourney Weaver? I Ā mean, some criticized Noomi Rapace but I thought she did a fine job and her character was just miles better than Daniels. Concerning the rest of the crew, they were just all underwhelming and uninteresting as well. At least, Ā Michael Fassbender was pretty good playing 2 different androids but it was a huge mistake to focus the movie so much on him alone. Anyway, to conclude, Ā I have to admit that the whole thing was still rather well made and even quite watchable but, in my opinion, Ridley Scott was basically pissing on his legacy with this rather useless sequel.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 18 May 2017 09:01 (A review of The Unknown Girl)

Even though this movie didn’t get much love when it was released, since I’m a huge fan of the [Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see]’s work, I was really eager to check it out. Well, at first, I was actually positively surprised by the damned thing. Indeed, Ā it was a really neat mix between a standard thriller and the typical sober and hyper-realistic directing style of the Dardenne Brothers. On top of that, the brothers once again discovered another promising actress and AdĆØle Haenel gave here a really strong performance. So, for a while, I thought it could turn out to be a really nice surprise but, unfortunately, the end-result still didn’t really convince me. The first thing that bothered me was the fact that the main character didn’t go to the police at some point after gathering so much information. However, the ending turned out to be a bigger problem though. Indeed, even though nobody would talk to the main character which made sense, at some point, out of nowhere, everybody would start to confess everything to her which was rather weak in my opinion. Basically, like any other average mystery thriller, the Dardennes brother didn’t really manage to give this story an interesting conclusion which was too bad. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its strong potential, it turned out to be rather disappointing but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 17 May 2017 07:46 (A review of The World's End)

Since this movie was the last part of Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, of course, I was really eager to check it out. In fact, even though ā€˜Shaun of the Dead’ and ā€˜Hot Fuzz’ immediately became some cult-classics, this movie didn’t actually make much waves, maybe Ā because it was released 6 long years after its predecessor. Well, anyway, even though it turned out to be fun, I can’t say I was really convinced though. First of all, probably because of its title, I thought it might be a disaster movie but, in fact, they went for something more like ā€˜Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ which unfortunately turned out to be a rather poor idea. Indeed, I’m not sure what bothered me the most, the fact that these alien robots were so lame or the fact that this concept was just way too similar to the zombies displayed in ā€˜Shaun of the Dead’. Fortunately, pretty much everything else was quite pitch-perfect and really damned entertaining. Indeed, I really loved the idea of this group of friends reuniting 20 years later facing the challenge of visiting all the pubs of the town of their youth and, basically, half of the movie, the cast was pretty much drunk which was just pretty fun to behold, especially thanks to a really solid cast. To conclude, even if I wasn’t completely sold, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 16 May 2017 07:55 (A review of Woman in Gold)

Since this movie was rather well received and since I have a weak spot for Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, it didn’t really blow me away though. First of all, I actually had a hard time with Ryan Reynolds. I mean, it was pretty neat that he was cast against type but he never really convinced me. To make things worse, up until Ā the moment he made his first trip to Austria, the guy kept cracking his usual wise-ass jokes which felt rather misguided. Ā Eventually, except for wearing some glasses, Reynolds didn’t do much to hide his good looks and I still had the feeling that I was watching some model and not an actual lawyer. It was even more awkward when, towards the end, Ā you get to see a picture of the real Randy Schoenberg who was apparently some average looking nerd. The funny thing is that Helen Mirren is also considered as one of the most gorgeous women in her age category but, in contrary to Reynolds, it was never a problem in this movie. Indeed, Mirren gave here once again a really solid performance and she was completely convincing playing this character. Concerning the story, it was quite interesting but, to be honest, after watching the amazing and heartbreaking ā€˜Saul Fia’, it felt a little bit light. Anyway, to conclude, even though I don’t think it was really amazing, it was still not bad at all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 14 May 2017 07:44 (A review of Cape Fear)

I had already seen this movie but since it was ages ago and since I had this movie on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, to be honest, I always had some mixed feelings about this movie. I mean, if you would compare it to all the garbage Robert De Niro is making nowadays or any average thriller coming from Hollywood, it is actually pretty dammed entertaining but if you would compare it to the great masterpieces involving Scorsese and De Niro, it was definitely a minor effort. I mean, sure, the directing was really solid and it was a great reminder that De Niro used to be one of the best actors in the world as he gave here such an intense performance. While watching this flick, I was also impressed by Juliette Lewis who was really convincing even though she was just about 18 years old at the time. Still, all in all, even though the story was entertaining, it was nothing mind-blowing or original and you could easily imagine that, with a lesser director and lead actor, it could have turned out to be rather lame and generic. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was definitely not a masterpiece, it was still a really solid thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Martin Scorsese's work.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 14 May 2017 07:14 (A review of A Better Life)

I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I had seen all the other movies directed by Chris Weitz and since it sounded intriguing, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though Roger Ebert was apparently quite enthusiastic  (he gave give this movie a score of 3.5 stars), in my opinion, it was a decent watch but not much more that, I'm afraid. I mean, right from the moment Carlos naively left his car keys on the ground while climbing some palm tree, it became really obvious where the whole thing was going to. Indeed, even though it wasn't a real remake of 'Ladri di biciclette', it was still heavily inspired by this timeless classic and while the makers could have obviously taken some much worse inspiration, I think it would have been more interesting if they went for something new instead of recycling an old classic. For example, I really liked the struggle lived by this teenager who didn't want to end up in gang but the kid was still conscious enough that life didn't have much else to offer for him which was rather heartbreaking. Furthermore, I don't blame DemiÔn Bichir who gave here a really strong performance. To conclude, even though it didn't really convince me, it was still not bad at all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 12 May 2017 08:25 (A review of Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal: The Movie)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick. Indeed, I was browsing through the movies in Netlix and I came across this movie which sounded actually really lame. But then, I noticed that Johnny Depp was involved so I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, it was just so weird to watch this movie thinking that Donald Trump has since then actually become the President of the United States. I mean, when we heard that the guy was running for candidate, we all thought that he was hopeless. Then, he was running against Hillary Clinton and, until the last minute, everyone thought that she would easily win and, yet, somehow, Trump still managed to become the most powerful man on Earth which is not only completely surrealĀ  but also rather scarry. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I have to admit that it was rather hit-and-miss. Still, it was pretty neat to see Johnny Depp who gave here a solid performance in my opinion. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I though it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 10 May 2017 08:47 (A review of A Woman Is a Woman)

It had been a while since I saw a movie directed by Jean-Luc Godard and since this one had a decent reputation, I Ā was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, it was definitely more watchable that the movies delivered by Godard later on during his career and it was pretty neat to see the guy putting a French New Wave twist on the romantic-comedy genre but, eventually, I still had a hard time to connect with this movie. Basically, like many other movies coming from this director, it was rather experimental, with no plot or scripts, which wasn't a bad thing, in the contrary, but it felt really random. Furthermore, it didn't help that I didn't care much for the characters who weren't really entertaining or fascinating to follow. Still, there is no doubt that Anna Karina, in her first part, was really charismatic and she would become one of the major actress involved in the French New Wave. To conclude, even though it didn't completely blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
