An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 15 September 2016 09:06 (A review of Charlie's Angels)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then when it was released, even if it did turn out to be fairly successful at the box-office, this movie still got a rather lame reputation. Even myself, I had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. Basically, on one hand, it was a rather moronic action flick but, on the other hand, I have seen much worse and the over-the-top approach actually had some potential. Indeed, the TV-show was nothing really serious to start with so to have some fun with this concept was not a bad idea. Well, after all these years, I don't think the damned thing was so bad after all. Indeed, the three girls (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu) looked fine and they were quite fun to behold. They could have dialed down the goofy humor but I was surprised that it actually worked most of the time. As a result, you get to see Bill Murray who was really fun and the guy was just a perfect choice to play John Bosley. Unfortunately, even though Murray was probably the best thing in this movie, he had apparently a major argument with Lucy Liu during the making of this movie so he didnā€™t show up for the sequel. It was also fun to be remembered that, after 'The Matrix' was released, so many action flicks like this one copied its way of shooting fighting scenes with some really dubious results. In general, the movie didn't look great visually speaking already when it was released but it was obviously never really the point. Anyway, to conclude, I have to admit that it wasnā€™t as awful as it thought it was, especially after watching Elizabeth Banks's even more abysmal version, and I think it is actually worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 14 September 2016 12:31 (A review of Contact)

To be honest, I always had some mixed about this movie and it is definitely one I really need to re-watch at some point. Indeed, the first time I watched it, I thought it was not bad but it didnā€™t really convince me either. However, ever since I watched the damned thing, I canā€™t really stop thinking about it from time to time so I really need to give it a 2nd shot. Anyway, Jodie Foster was pretty good, as usual, and Robert Zemeckis definitely delivered some decent directing but the main issue, at least from what I remember, is that the whole thing was just a really long and slow progression. Basically, the whole thing had a running time of about 150 mins (so far the longest movie directed by Robert Zemeckis) and it took forever before Jodie Foster finally went on her journey which was, I must admit it, pretty impressive. So, while I was impressed by the conclusion, I never understood why it took so long to get there. Still, I canā€™t shake the idea that I missed the point the first time I watched it (the fact that Roger Ebert really loved this movie must be another reason) and I will definitely check this one once again when I get the opportunity.

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 14 September 2016 11:14 (A review of Cruel Intentions)

Right now, Iā€™m actually reading ā€˜Les liaisons dangereusesā€™ in the original French language, it is a really great book and it reminds me that, maybe, I should give this modern adaptation a 2nd chance at some to point.Ā Ā To be honest, I have always been amazed by how high rated the whole thing was and I wasnā€™t never reallyĀ impressed by the damned thing. I donā€™t know, it seems to me that the whole thing was mostly loved by its target audience, the teenagers, who basically never read the book or saw the amazing version directed by Stephen Frears. Basically, it is and remains a fascinating story with some really nicely messed-up characters but, in this case, it is just a rather weak adaptation. I mean, at least, if they have pushed the eroticism as far as possible, then it could have been something slightly more interesting but, instead you get a rather vapid feature made to tease the teenagers but, eventually, it was all rather harmless. Itā€™s like this kiss involving Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, it seems that it is what everybody remembers about this movie and while I have to admit it, it was pretty neat, nothing else really steamy happens during the whole thing. At least, there was a pretty cool cast involving a lot of up-and-coming actors (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, Tara Reid). Anyway, to conclude, I think the damned thing is seriously overrated and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 14 September 2016 07:58 (A review of Escape Plan)

To be honest, I thought it was rather difficult to judge this movie. Basically, if those guys would have made this movie 20 or 30 years ago, it would have been a huge hit but, now, it seems to be too late and this movie was indeed a box-office flop (at least, in the US, in the rest of the world, it was actually fairly successful). Obviously, they seem a little bit too old to play in such action movies (they are both 70 years old by now) . At least, Stallone was still convincing but I wasnā€™t so sure about Schwarzenegger. Indeed, Stallone never stopped working while Schwarzenegger took a 7 years break to be Governor of California and it had an impact on him physically. In this movie, he was mostly filmed in close-ups and I wonder if he really did his stunts himself. Anyway, it was still pretty cool to see them together playing some kind of bad-ass duo. Concerning the story itself, half of it was pretty good and half of it was rather lame. For example, the escaping stuff was actually pretty neat, especially the first attempt which felt actually quite realistic. However, the whole conspiracy thing felt rather far-fetched and I think it would have worked better with a normal prison instead of this high-tech stuff which wasnā€™t really satisfying after all. On a positive note, I thought Jim Caviezel was a pretty cool villain and the guy delivered a solid performance. Anyway, all in all, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 13 September 2016 09:04 (A review of Die Another Day)

Right now, it seems that the Bond franchise is in limbo after 2 massive box-office success and, at this point, it is not really clear if Daniel Craig will come back or be replaced. Eventually, in the future, this period would probably be considered as the Golden Age of this franchise. Unfortunately, as a result, we tend to look down on the installments involving Pierce Brosnan. I mean, sure, Brosnan was maybe not as good as Daniel Craig and Sean Connery but we seem to forget that it is with him that the franchise became healthy again. Of course, it doesnā€™t help that this 4th and last installment was actually pretty weak. In fact, like the other installments starring Brosnan, the whole thing was actually quite successful and it was even the highest-grossing James Bond film at the time but, unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the weakest installment in this franchise. I mean, some elements were pretty cool, for example, it starred 2 of the very best Bond-girls with Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike and it seemed to be a great idea to have the bad guy coming from South Korea. Unfortunately, nothing else really worked, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, the plot was boring and moronic, on top of that, they tried too squeeze way to many winks to the franchise legacy because it was an anniversary installment (indeed, Ā ā€˜Dr. Noā€™ was released 40 years before). To conclude, it was a rather lazy and tedious Bond feature and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look, unless you are a die-hard fan of this franchise. Ā

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 12 September 2016 09:45 (A review of What Maisie Knew)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since the ratings were pretty good, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it turned out to be some kind of really f*ckep-up and mean-spirited version of 'Kramer vs Kramer' told from the point of view of the child. Basically, it was so sad and depressing, the whole thing was almost unbearable to watch. I mean, first, you had the mother who was a total disaster. I don't want to blame Julianne Moore as she gave as usual a solid performance but this character was awful with not one single redeeming feature. Concerning the father, he was slightly better but only slightly better as he turned out to be a major dick as well. Eventually, both of them just kept dumping their daughter whenever they felt like it and, to make things worse, this sweet little girl was just so cute, it was just awful to behold. Still, even though this story was told from this little girl's point of view, you never really get the chance to know her and you are only allowed to feel sorry for her. To conclude, it wasn't bad, it was actually well made with some decent performances but this story was just so mean and filled up with some of the most unlikeable characters I have seen for a very long time and, as a result, I really had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. At least, if you think you are a shitty parent, this movie will show you that it could be 10 times worse.

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 12 September 2016 12:48 (A review of Collateral (2004))

What the hell happened to Michael Mann?!? Indeed, during the last 10 years, he has directed only 3 movies, ā€˜Miami Viceā€™ which was really disappointing, ā€˜Public Enemiesā€™ which I have probably seriously overrated and finally ā€˜Blackhatā€™, easily one of the worst movies released in 2015. It is really sad because, before that, Mann was probably one of the most exciting directors around. I guess most people would say that ā€˜Heatā€™ was and still is his best directing effort but this movie was definitely not far behind. Indeed, it was one hell of a thriller and it was one of the very few examples that, if Tom Cruise goes outside his comfort zone, the guy can be actually pretty terrific. Indeed, his character here was so much more fascinating than his usual boring heroes. Furthermore, the whole thing looked terrific and Mann managed to create here a spellbinding mood. To be honest, I donā€™t think the story really made sense though. I mean, why would a hit-man spend the whole night with a cab-driver like this? I mean, to use a cab to do a quick job, sure, why not, but to spend a whole night with the very same guy resulted for something quite entertaining but not really realistic. Still, this was a minor issue, it remains probably one of the best thrillers out there and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 12 September 2016 09:05 (A review of Boys on the Beach)

Well, this is another really obscure French flick. In fact, if I recall it correctly it, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Jamel Debbouze must be completely unknown outside of France (he did play in 2 international productions, ā€˜She Hate Meā€™ and ā€˜360ā€™, but they were both barely seen and rather weak) but, in France, the guy is pretty huge. Back in 98, he got his breakthrough on TV on Canal + and I have to admit that he was often quite hilarious. Eventually, a year later, he would make this movie which would be his first starring role and it was pretty obvious that they tried to take advantage of his new found fame. Ā Still, even though the whole thing was a rather shameless cash grab, I thought it was still a decent watch though. Sure, the whole thing was nothing really amazing and, without Debbouzeā€™s charisma and humor, it would have been pretty terrible but, all in all, it turned out to be fairly entertaining. Concerning the director Djamel Bensalah, he apparently kept making such comedies focusing on the minorities in France, I havenā€™t seen any of them but since they were all really poorly received, I donā€™t think I missed much. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was not bad and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 11 September 2016 03:57 (A review of For a Good Time, Call...)

Obviously, I didn't expect much from this movie but since it was on the TV, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be as lame as it looked. I have to admit it, congrats to Seth Roger who managed to get married with such a cute girl like Lauren Ā Miller but she would really need some better material if she ever wants to have a successful career like her husband. I mean, even though phone-sex might seem outdated, it seems that it is still pretty popular since it must be safer than going to a prostitute and it requires more interaction than watching a porn video and more fantasy than watching a webcam girl. Anyway, since it was a comedy, it is pretty obvious that the subject wouldn't be handled seriously but they could have better developed this idea. For example, it was seriously far-fetched that one of those girls was still a virgin. And yet, she does have sex eventually, with a her clothes on and she gets an orgasm and, I forget to mention, the guy she was sleaping with, was a former client. Seriously, from everything I just described, none of it worked. Eventually, the biggest problem was that those two girls were never interesting or entertaining enough. Anyway, even though I have seen worse, it was still a rather weak comedy and I don't think it is worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 10 September 2016 06:16 (A review of Furious 7)

First of all, to be honest, I have never been a huge fan of this franchise and except for a decent 5th installment, all these movies really bored me, even the most recent entries. Still, since this last installment completely broke the box-office, I was quite eager to check it out but, unfortunately, once again, I didn't care much for the damned thing. This time, it became some kind of 'Mission: Impossible' copycat which was as ridiculous as it sounds. Seriously, the story was just so preposterous but I could have forgotten its silliness if it would have been slightly more entertaining. At least, there were 2 really cool action scenes (the one when Paul Walker jumps from a falling bus and the other one when they crash through 2 towers with a supercar) but the rest was just rather boring, I'm afraid. For some reasons, since Paul Walker passed away during the production, I was expecting his character to be killed at some point but I realized eventually that it would have been really tasteless and the way they simply retired his character was much more appropriate and easily one of the best moments in this otherwise tedious movie. Furthermore, I was surprised to discover that Walker only managed to shot half of his scenes but, while watching the damned thing, I thought it was really him almost all the time so they did a pretty good job here. Anyway, to conclude, I'm rather amazed that this movie turned out to be such a massive box-office success and I don't think it is really worth a look, except if you are really a fan of this franchise.
