An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 20 November 2012 09:41 (A review of Invincible)

Honestly, Iā€™m not a huge fan of sport movies, however, since the ratings for this movie were pretty good, I thought I should check it out. Since it is a Disney production, I shouldnā€™t expect anything really revolutionary and, indeed, it followed the rules of the genre like other similar features such as ā€˜The Rookieā€™ (which had in fact pretty much the same plot except that it was dealing with baseball) or ā€˜The greatest game ever playerā€™. Still, I enjoyed most of it. Indeed, it is a rather amazing Cinderella story and it is quite endearing to see how humble Papale remained under the circumstances (at least, thatā€™s how he was displayed in the movie). Going from absolutely nothing, losing his job, losing his wife, with no money to pay the rent, the guy managed to become a NFL player and became a local hero for a community struggling to make ends meet. I thought that Mark Wahlberg was pretty good and I wish he took more risks in his career like when he starred in ā€˜Boogie Nightsā€™ for example but he still had a decent career so far. Unfortunately, like I said before, the movie still followed the usual template so you had a whole bunch of underdeveloped or unnecessary subplots like the obligatory love story, the family scenes with the coach, Papaleā€™s friendsā€¦ Still, it remains a really uplifting tale. To conclude, even though it is nothing remotely original, it is remains a well made and entertaining sport feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 19 November 2012 01:57 (A review of A Thousand Acres)

I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a pretty good cast, I thought I should check it out. Not only there was a really interesting cast (Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Colin Firth), but it was also an adaptation of a Pulitzer prize winning novel which was also a loose adaptation of ā€˜King Learā€™ written by good old William Shakespeare. So, it all sounded pretty impressive on paper but, unfortunately, the whole thing ended up being a rather half-baked melodrama. I donā€™t think the actors should be blamed though. Indeed, they all did a decent job, it was pretty neat to see Michelle Pfeiffer and Jessica Lange together and Lange was even nominated for a Golden Globe award. Iā€™m not sure which one was worse, the directing or the writing, which was quite disappointing especially regarding the source material. Eventually, I didnā€™t care much about the characters and what they were going through and I was rather bored during the whole thing. To conclude, it could have been an impressive drama but the end result was pretty disappointing and, at the end of the day, it is just a really average flick and it is not really worth a look, Iā€™m afraid.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 18 November 2012 07:18 (A review of Blood and Chocolate)

I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but since Nick, my step-son, is a huge fan of Werewolves movies, I thought I should check it out with him. Eventually, it wasn't really good I'm afraid. For instance, if you think 'Twilight' was pretty pathetic concerning its portrayal of Werewolves, you should check this flick. Basically, the major difference between us and them is that they constantly make some weird jumps, that's it. I must admit that it was a nice approach to make them change into real wolves though. Still, the plot was pretty average and rather boring. You could sense that there was some potential and, apparently, the book tells a really different story but the end result was here pretty disappointing. I also found it a pretty pathetic this idea that a comic-book writer could live and spend time abroad like this for weeks. Indeed, it is in fact a very hard and thankless job, only a handful have managed to make some money out of this and I'm talking about the really famous ones. To conclude, I have seen worse movies but it still remains a rather average flick and it is not really worth a look, in my opinion.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 17 November 2012 08:03 (A review of Grown Ups)

Even though I heard here and there that it was one of the worst movies made in 2010, I was still curious to see how it turned out to be. Surprisingly, I don't think it was that bad actually. Indeed, the concept was actually pretty good and the whole thing was not as mean-spirited as many other Sandler's vehicles. Unfortunately, even though it was not as bad as I thought it would be, it was still pretty average. Above all, I thought it was rather poorly written. Indeed, you have 4 couples, a bunch of kids, David Spade as a single guy, but none of those characters were properly developed. At the beginning, it felt like all those couples had some issues, some kind of deep secrets but you didn't learn anything about them after all. The biggest victim was Chris Rock, my favorite actor of the bunch, as he barely had anything to do or to say during the whole thing. Concerning the jokes, some of them were funny but most of them were rather pathetic and embarrassing. Eventually, it was nothing great and pretty average but I though the whole thing was rather good-hearted and harmless. But it doesn't matter at all what I think because Adam Sandler, once again, made a chuck load of money with this flick. To conclude, even though it is eventually not one of the worst movies starring Adam Sandler, it remains a very average comedy and it is not really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 16 November 2012 11:49 (A review of American Gangster)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, I have to tell you some background concerning the circumstances in which I end up watching this flick the first time around. When I was living in France, I used to go very often to the movie theater, at least once a week since I was 12 years old. I just loved it but then I moved to the Netherlands, I met my wife, she already got two kids then we got a baby girl together. So, for maybe 4 or 5 years, I didnā€™t go much to the theater because I was busy with my wife and kids. However, when the youngest got older, it started to hitch me, I wanted to have something for myself, some quality time, so I decided to go back to the movies, just like in the good old days. Well, I have never been a religious man but, to me, it was like going back to my temple, seriously. So, of course, even before the movie started, I already loved the damned thing, just because of these circumstances and even afterwards, I thought it was completely awesome. I have been following Ridley Scott for years and his directing didnā€™t disappoint me. There was also a fine cast (Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, RZA, Carla Gugino) and they all delivered some solid performances. Furthermore, I thought the story was fairly Ā entertaining. So, when I came out, I was kind of ecstatic but, when I think about it now, I think I enjoyed it so much above all because I missed my regular trips to the theater. Indeed, at the end of the day, it is a solid and well made gangster feature but it didnā€™t bring much to the genre and it wasnā€™t really original in its approach, Iā€™m afraid. The second time around, it also struck me that none of the characters involved, even Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts, were actually developed whatsoever. Still, in spite of its flaws, it was another solid directorial effort from Ridley Scott and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 16 November 2012 10:59 (A review of Disturbing Behavior)

Oh God!! I really really didnā€™t like this flickā€¦ I mean, of course, with such a title, I wasnā€™t expecting much but even with such low expectations, it managed to disappoint meā€¦ I donā€™t know, some people do seem to have enjoyed this movie but I thought the plot was just completely tedious. Of course, Iā€™m aware of the fact that the whole thing shouldnā€™t be taken too seriously but it doesnā€™t change the fact that it still has to be entertaining somehow and it was definitely not the case here. In my opinion, the whole thing was just terribly lazy, unoriginal and just really boring to watch. The cast was made of 3 upcoming young actors (Nick Stahl, Katie Holmes, James Marsden) and it is interesting to note where their career went from there. Nick Stahl is still making movies nowadays but most of them are just some obscure B features and he is apparently struggling with some substance issues. Since Katie Holmes has married (and in the mean time already divorced) Tom Cruise, her career is going pretty much nowhere and it is too bad as she was a really promising actress before she met the guy. James Marsden is the only one who managed to have a decent career, even though you donā€™t see him much portraying the lead character nowadays. A part from that, I donā€™t have much else to say about this flick, except that, apparently, in some markets the film lasted only a week in cinemas, so I guess, I wasnā€™t the only one who didnā€™t care at all about this flick. Anyway, to conclude, I think it is pretty lame and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look at all.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 16 November 2012 09:59 (A review of Michael)

It is interesting to note that even though, thanks to ā€˜Pulp Fictionā€™, John Travolta made one of the most impressive comebacks ever, he still continued to make his share of flops but he always managed nonetheless to remain on the A list this time. This flick is one of those turkeys and it is arguably one of the least popular movies starring Travolta. Honestly, even though I had some low expectations, I donā€™t think it was that bad at all and I enjoyed most of it. Indeed, I thought it was pretty neat to have an angel portrayed as a misfit. I mean, if I recall correctly, he was not really a thug, just an angel who wanted to enjoy what life has to offer and I thought it was an interesting idea. I thought that Travolta did a decent job and William Hurt was just really good, as usual. Hurt is a terrific actor, one of the best in the 80ā€™s, and I will never understand how he just disappeared from the limelight in the 90ā€™s. A real shame and waste of talent. Andie MacDowell was not bad and charming as usual but rather underused, Iā€™m afraid. Still, even though I thought it was not bad at all, it was still nothing really impressive. The point is that even though Nora Ephron started with an interesting idea, there was an obvious lack of any ambition and the whole thing never went much further than your standard romantic comedy and that was rather disappointing. Still , to conclude, in spite of its reputation, I still think it is a rather decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like John Travolta.

A bad movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 16 November 2012 09:20 (A review of Costa! (2001))

I always find it pretty neat to watch some Dutch movies from time to time but, honestly, some of them are just plain terrible. For example, I had some rather low expectations concerning this one and it was indeed pretty much as bad as I thought it would be. The weird thing is it was really popular when it was releasedā€¦ It does make you wonder about the values and taste of the Dutch people. Anywayā€¦ A long time ago, I have seen ā€˜Volle Maanā€™ and it was just about the very same drill. Indeed, the directing was non-existent, the dialogues were pathetic and the characters were barely developed. It was supposed to give you this nice and warm feeling that you usually get during the summer holiday but the only thing I thought while watching this is ā€˜Gosh! This place does look really lame ā€¦ā€™. The only remotely attracting aspect was to see a whole bunch of young Dutch actors as some of those became pretty famous afterwards, at least in the Netherlands (Georgina Verbaan, Daan Schuurmans, Katja Schuurman, Michiel Huisman, Nadja HĆ¼pscher, Peggy Jane de Schepper, Charly Luske). A part from that, it was pretty pathetic to watch and I was completely bored during the whole thing. To conclude, it is pretty bad and not worth a look whatsoever even if you are interested in Dutch movies.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 15 November 2012 01:40 (A review of Un week-end sur deux)

It is one of the most obscure movies I have seen and I don't expect you have heard about it. I donā€™t expect you to know Nicole Garcia either. She has a decent reputation as an actress in France but Iā€™m sure she is pretty much unknown abroad. Honestly, I'm not very familiar with her acting career but I have seen most of the movies she has directed and I really like her style. Itā€™s too bad that not more women direct movies since female directors have usually really different sensitivity than their male counterpart and make some striking features. Anyway, this movie was her directing debut, even though it was far from being her best movie, I thought it was a solid drama. Indeed, at the center, you have Nathalie Baye playing the lead character, and she was really good and basically carried the whole thing. Eventually, she would be nominated for the CĆ©sar of the Best actress (the CĆ©sars are the French Oscars, if you didnā€™t know). Like I said before, even though it is an interesting debut, it is not completely successful though. I mean, the plot was rather murky, if there was any plot at all, and the main character, even though she was interesting, was rather annoying and I had a hard time caring about her and what she was going through. Still, even though it is nothing amazing, it remains an interesting drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 15 November 2012 11:13 (A review of Fired Up!)

How did I end up watching this flick? What the hell was I thinking?!? As you may have noticed, I often waste my time with some terrible garbage. I guess Iā€™m kind of masochist in some wayā€¦ Anyway, this is the kind of movies which, as soon as you know what it is about, you usually drop any expectation you might have had. Indeed, the plot was rather lame and the whole thing was rather hopeless. Still, I must admit it, there were here and there some funny things and it was sometimes so stupid, I couldnā€™t help laughing during some bits. As usual, I always manage to find some redeeming features even in the worst case scenariosā€¦ Honestly, the whole thing actually had some potential. I mean, those two guys were completely shallow and if the makers would have chosen a darker cynical approach, trashing the whole cheerleading culture, it could have been something, not really amazing, but at least more interesting than this. Unfortunately, even though the poster displays a huge ā€˜FUā€™, they still managed to get a PG13 rating out of something which obviously should have been R rated. As a result, not only the whole thing was barely funny, it was also terribly tame and watered down. Anyway, to conclude, donā€™t be fooled by my rating here, I was extremely generous, basically it is a really average comedy and it is not really worth a look even if you like the genre.
