A terrible movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 14 September 2011 07:35 (A review of Love N' Dancing)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before that, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was starring Amy Smart. Indeed, since I have a weak spot for this actress, I thought I should check this one out. My gosh... What a terrible movie! Basically, it was some very bad remake of ā€˜Dirty Dancing’ which wasn’t already such a great movie in my opinion. At least, I have to admit that the dancing sequences were in fact pretty cool but the story was just so weak, the dialogues were just laughable and the performances by the whole cast were very poor. Billy Zane was the only one who managed to be watchable but his character was such a dick, it made it impossible to root for him. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was just pretty bad and you should definitely avoid it.

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 13 September 2011 01:25 (A review of Children of Paradise (1945))

Since it is considered one of the greatest classics of the French cinema, of course, I was really eager to check it out and eventually, I wasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure. Indeed, first of all, you have to check the great people who were involved in this production (it was directed by Marcel CarnĆ© and written by French poet Jacques PrĆ©vert). When you dig into its history, it is even more amazing as you think that they managed to make this flick during the height of the Nazi occupation and, apparently, it seems that many members of the resistance were actually involved in this production. I have to admit, it is a rather long feature but, with some gorgeous black and white cinematography, some really impressive actors, the whole thing was still pretty damned mesmerizing. By now, I have seen my share of movies directed by Marcel CarnĆ© and this must be the most prestigious one (not sure if it is my favorite though since I really loved ā€˜DrĆ“le de Drame’, I guess I would need to re-watch both but it is definitely a close call). To conclude, it is indeed a great classic, I loved it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 13 September 2011 12:03 (A review of Julie & Julia)

Basically, since Meryl Streep is my favorite actress, I really had to watch this flick. To be honest, even though Streep was giving a solid performance as usual, I thought that Julia Child was actually a really caricatural character and I thought she was even rather annoying but then later on, she grew on me and I especially enjoyed the beautiful relationship she had with her husband. On the other hand, I have never been really crazy about Amy Adams. Indeed, she always plays some rather annoying and hysterical characters and here, once again, even though she toned it down a little bit,Ā  her character was was once again rather hysterical. Still, I have to admit that I really enjoyed the blogging though. Indeed, it actually reminded me when I started on Listal. Back then, I was making lists after lists but wouldn't get any votes or comments but then, I got my first vote and comment and now I'm ranked 27! I even have a list with more than 400 000 views ([Link removed - login to see])! Still, this flick was Ā rather flawed though. In my opinion, the main issue with this movie was that both stories were interesting and, even though it might have seemed like a good idea to combine them, it didn't really work and the end-result was even rather frustrating. Evenually, they ended up with two rather half-baked stories (pun intended). Anyway, to conclude, it was nothing great but I still enjoyed it and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 13 September 2011 11:12 (A review of Paranoid Park)

Since I’m a big fan of Gus van Sant, I was quite eager to check this flick. Indeed, even though his most recent movies have all been rather disappointing (ā€˜The Sea of Trees’, ā€˜Promised Land’, ā€˜Restless’), I still think that Gus Van Sant is a very interesting director. In fact, I have noticed that he usually alternates mainstream and experimental projects and this flick definitely belonged to the second group. Basically, you either enjoy those movies or you don’t since they are really slow paced and without a real plot. Well, I do enjoy those flicks. In this case, the first shot really reminded me of Hitchcock with this ominous music and, when I learned about the story, the reference was then quite obvious. Basically, this movie was a mix of, indeed, Hitchcock, 'Crime & Punishment' and some teenage skaters. I thought the whole thing was really beautifully shot and I really enjoyed the performances by the non-professional cast. Still, I have to admit that the end was not really great though but it really fit the rest of the movie in my opinion. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was pretty good and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Gus Van Sant's work.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 12 September 2011 09:34 (A review of Must Love Dogs)

Honestly, with a title like this, you pretty know what you will get even before watching this flick. I guess, my wife would have been more attracted to it than me since it is because of her that we own right now 5 dogs but anyway, since I have a weak spot for Diane Lane, I still wanted to check this flick. To be honest, he doesn't really have a huge range as an actress and she actually always plays the same character but she does it very well and she is always charismatic. This time, she was working with John Cusack on a romantic-comedy so I thought it could be pretty good but, unfortunately, the end result was rather underwhelming. I mean, come on, the whole routine of the friends and family putting her on a dating site without her approval but of course, she still falls in love with the guy anyway, is just so old, boring, predictable and completely overdone at this point. To conclude, even though the actors were all quite nice, charming and all the story was unfortunately not really entertaining whatsoever and the whole thing is eventually not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 12 September 2011 08:29 (A review of The Rebound)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have became slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones . Indeed, I always had a weak spot for this actress, I actually thinks she is quite charming but she didn't make so many movies back then and most of them were seriously quite forgettable. Unfortunately, this flick was not an exception. I mean, I'm a really a sucker for this kind of romantic-comedies, especially when they are dealing with an older woman falling in love with a younger man (it has probably to do with the fact that my wife is 11 years older than me). Unfortunately, it took forever to take off, with some awkward and pathetic 'funny' scenes. Eventually, when they finally get together, the whole thing started to got better and there were even some nice and touching scenes. But then again, they had to break up for some really bogus reasons which was just so annoying. Towards the end, they did try to recover the damage done but I wasn't really convinced. To conclude, it was a very average romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 11 September 2011 01:01 (A review of The Great Waldo Pepper)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from the damned thing but since I always had a weak spot for Robert Redford, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, way before ā€˜Top Gun’, they actually made this vintage flick about the aviation. Well, even though this movie was never as famous as the classic action flick starring Tom Cruise, in fact, I thought it was actually much better. Indeed, first of all, I really liked the way they gave us a good look at the USA during the 20's. Obviously, Robert Redford was, as usual, very charming and the guy gave another solid performance. In fact, I believe that most actors would have been rather ridiculous in this role. Concerning the story, I have to admit that it was nothing really original but I thought it was entertaining enough. What I really enjoyed is that they managed to show how those guys were daring and courageous but also at the same time rather ridiculous and childhish. To conclude, even though I don’t think it was anything really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre of if you are interested in Robert Redford’s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 10 September 2011 07:18 (A review of Fierce People)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since there was really interesting cast involved (Anton Yelchin, Diane Lane, Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans, Kristen Stewart, Paz de la Huerta), I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it was a typical quirky indie comedy but they tried eventually Ā to become more serious and, at some point, it became more a drama. Anyway, the plot was not really mindblowing and there was a collection of weird and excentric characters. Some of them were really neat, like Anton Yelchin and Donald Sutherland but I wasn't so convinced by Diane Lane. I mean, she was charming as usual but even though she started as a junkie, whithin 10 minutes, she became a standard mother and her drug past was never to be noticed in her performance ever again. In my opinion, one of the main issue with this flick was that there were way too many characters and most of them were actually barely developped. For example, Chris Evans was pretty interesting but we never really learned anything about his character. It's too bad since Yelchin and Sutherland were very good and the story had some potential. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look especially if you like this genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 10 September 2011 04:38 (A review of Dreamscape)

This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Dennis Quaid. At least, this movie was dealing with a very interesting subject. Indeed, dreams are just fascinating and they represent a limitless source of inspiration for film makers. However, even though this flick was dealing with dreams, it was definitely not on the level of something like 'Inception'. Basically, the plot and directing were really average, the dialogues were even laughable and even the music was way too cheesy (I was rather stunned when I discovered afterwards that it was composed by Academy Award winner Maurice Jarre). To make things worse, Kate Capshaw and Dennis Quaid both gave some very poor performances and Quaid was really not convincing as some kind of telepathic genius. Fortunately, the great Max von Sydow can't do no wrong and was alright here. Actually, there were some interesting ideas here and I did like the dreams sequences but, basically, it was a movie dealing with a serious subject but it refused to take this subject seriously and the end result was therefore just completely underwhelming. To conclude, it is not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 10 September 2011 03:51 (A review of Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles)

This movie was a perfect example. Indeed, even though, when I was a kid, I thought that that ā€˜Crocodile Dundee’ was pretty cool, that’s a movie didn’t grow old well at all. With this in mind, it is rather bewildering that, 13 years after the last previous sequel, they still came up with a 3rd instalment when, in fact, I’m pretty sure nobody was waiting for another outback adventure. I don’t know maybe they thought it was really necessary to round up the trilogy. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. I mean, the plot was pretty weak and completely predictable but Crocodile Dundee still remain a charming character. Eventually, it was average , rather harmless and obviously aimed to a young audience but if you are older than 13 years old, it is not really worth a look.
