A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 01:22 (A review of Open Your Eyes)

With this movie, Alejandro Amenabar became a household name and went to direct ā€˜The Othersā€™ in Hollywood. After ā€˜Mar Adentroā€™, it became rather quiet with the Spanish director but, apparently, he is coming back with something new in 2015 after a 6 years hiatus. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I find it rather difficult to choose between this one and the remake which one is the best. Still, I think I still prefer the original version because it focuses more on the story, there was no Hollywood influence here and, of course, the whole thing came from this flick. Still, even though it was an intriguing story, somehow, it didnā€™t really blow me away. I donā€™t know, on one hand, the surrealist atmosphere was one of the main assets of this movie, making it sometimes quite mesmerizing but, on the other hand, because of all the weird stuff going on, it was difficult to connect with the characters or to care with that they were going through. Still, to conclude, even though I didnā€™t think it was really a masterpiece, it remains a pretty good mind-f*ck and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spanish movies.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 01:14 (A review of JamĆ³n, JamĆ³n)

I remember it quite well when this movie was released. Indeed, back then, I must have been 12 or 13 years old when it was released, and there was quite some buzz about this movie, at least in France. I remember also very well this big bull on the poster. Sure, it seemed rather weird and obviously really inappropriate for someone of my age but, somehow, I thought it looked really intriguing. Eventually, it took me about 20 years to finally see the damned thing. The first interesting about this flick is that it was the first movie starring PenƩlope Cruz and, if I'm not wrong, she was just about 18 years old at the time. It was also one of the first movies starring Javier Bardem but they would eventually get romantically involved only 15 years later. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it was basically a slightly erotic drama with some rather messed up characters but the story was mostly quite spellbinding to watch. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spanish movies.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 12:41 (A review of Bad Education)

I already saw this movie, but since it was ages ago, I thought I might as well check it out again. First of all, Pedro Almodovar is one of those directors that I have always admired but, to be honest, he never became a personal favorite of mine. Basically, he is what you could call a real author who has created his own style and, therefore, he always got my respect but, honestly, I always had a hard time to connect with his work. Still, he did make a few movies which really did impress me and this one was definitely one of them. Eventually, I'm really glad I gave it another shot because I was, this time, much more able to enjoy the damned thing. Indeed, the acting, especially by Gael Garcia Bernal who was at the time probably one of the most interesting actors at work, was quite strong. It was really neat to see this Mexican actor in a Spanish production and it is a real pity the guy never really broke through like I was hoping for. On top of that, Almodovar definitely knows how to direct a movie and the whole thing was certainly interesting to behold. Above all, after all these years, I was finally able to enjoy this fascinating story which definitely belongs among the best delivered by the Spanish master, no less than that. Sure, he gave us his usual convoluted twists and some over-the-top characters which have always been some of his most famous trademarks but, here, it didn't bother me, in the contrary. Eventually, all the characters involved were complex and flawed but still relatable which is not always the case with this director. Anyway, to conclude, it really deserves its stellar reputation and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Pedro Almodovar's work.

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 12:33 (A review of Viridiana)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. To be honest, even after re-watching this movie, it was still tricky for me to judge this movie. I mean, it is so subtle and I was never really sure what Luis BuƱuel was actually trying to achieve here. The interesting thing is that, the first time around, I thought it was great and inspiring and I really loved the damned thing. After all these years, it is rather difficult to imagine how shocking this movie must have been when it came out at the beginning of the 60's (in fact, even though it was made and produced in Spain, it was banned in this country for many years). Maybe, what BuƱuel meant with this movie, was that the traditional religious dogma might be actually a waste of time as it goes against many of our basic urges. Eventually, we are all sinners some way or another so there is really no need to feel so guilty about it, as displayed in the last scene, and our sins are basically what makes us human. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didnā€™t completely blow me away, it was still a really intriguing flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luis BuƱuel's work.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 12:29 (A review of Live Flesh)

It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen more than half of the movies directed by Pedro AlmodĆ³var and, to be honest, even though I have a lot of respect for his work, I must confess Iā€™m not a huge fan and I have usually a hard time to connect with his movies. There are some exceptions though and this movie is definitely one of them. In fact, it is not even one of the most famous movies directed by AlmodĆ³var but it is actually one of my favorites. I mean, sure, as usual with this director, the whole thing was rather over the top but, this time, it didn't bother me at all. Indeed, I thought that the story worked very well, all the actors involved delivered some solid performances and, above all, I was for once able to connect with these characters. After this, AlmodĆ³var would come up with ā€˜Todo sobre mi madreā€™ which would turn out to be one of his biggest critical successes but, personally, I preferred this lesser known feature. Anyway, to conclude, I really liked this movie a lot and it is definitely worth a look especially if you are interested in Pedro AlmodĆ³var's work.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 12:24 (A review of Sex and Lucia)

It was one of the first movies starring Paz Vega and after this flick, her career really took off. A year later, she would work with Pedro Almodovar (they would make only 1 movie together) and 3 years later, she would make a first US production (ā€˜Spanglishā€™) but her career eventually never managed to be as successful as PenĆ©lope Cruz. Concerning the director, Julio Medem, even though he seems to have a pretty solid reputation , I have never seen anything else directed by this guy but I will sure do whenever I get the opportunity. Indeed, even though I have a lot of respect for Almodovarā€™s work, I usually have a hard time to connect with his eccentric characters. With Medem, the characters are just as complex but I was more able to connect with them and there was something really intriguing about them and what they were going through. There was also a lot of talk about the rather explicit sex scenes but they fit really well with the rest of the story so they didnā€™t bother me. Anyway, it is a very profound and emotional drama, I really loved it and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spanish movies.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 12:21 (A review of Talk to Her)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was really eager to check it out again. By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by Pedro AlmodĆ³var and, to be honest, even though I have a lot of respect for his work, I must confess that Iā€™m not a huge fan and I have usually a hard time to really connect with his movies. There are some exceptions though and this movie is definitely one of them. In fact, it is easily my favorite movie directed by him. This time, the story was quite spellbinding and, for once, the whole thing didn't go way over the top, something that usually bothers me with AlmodĆ³varā€™s flicks. Sure, as usual with his work, there was still some weird stuff, butĀ  the story was still a really strong drama with some complex but still believable characters. Above all, Begnino was not only wasĀ a typical messed-up Almodovar figure but also such a fascinating character. Indeed, even though the guy was completely delusional and did a monstrous thing, he wasn't displayed as a monster or a freak which was, in my opinion, one of Almodovar's biggest achievements. Anyway, back in those days, the Spanish master was pretty much at the top of his game as this feature followed up the already critically acclaimed ā€˜Todo sobre mi madreā€™ and all his other movies released in the 2000ā€™s will be very well received (ā€˜La mala educaciĆ³nā€™, ā€˜Volverā€™, ā€˜Los abrazos rotosā€™). To conclude, I really loved this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Pedro AlmodĆ³varā€™s work.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 11:10 (A review of The Grim Reaper (1962))

This is the very first flick directed by Bertolucci. I have seen actually better movies directed by him but it is only real 'Italian' movie he directed that I saw, his other flicks being more 'International' procutions (like 'The last emperor' for example). Anyway, it is a very realistic movie with a spellbinding plot and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Bertolucci's work.

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 11:05 (A review of Death in Venice)

I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I was quite eager to check it out again. Indeed, the first time I saw it, I must have been about 16-17 years and, at the time, I didnā€™t get this movie at all. Indeed, back then, I kept hearing some really great things about this flick and since I always had a weak spot fot Luchino Viscontiā€™s work, I was expecting a masterpiece but, to be honest, I wasn't really blown away eventually. Well, I was hoping that, 20 years later, I was now mature enough and that I would be more able to enjoy this movie but, unfortunately, I still struggled to connect with this movie. Eventually, what bothered me the most with this flick was that nothing much really happened through the whole thing. Indeed, the main character was walking around in Venice, going to the beach, to the restaurant and, that was it basically. On top of that, I wonā€™t blame Dirk Bogarde as he gave a really solid performance but I didnā€™t care much about this guy who was rather uncharismatic and even rather unlikable. Of course, the fact that he was basically a pedophile fantasizing on a very young boy obviously didnā€™t help. At least, as usual with Luchino Visconti, the whole thing was just really beautiful to look at but, to be honest, it did feel like watching paint dry. I mean, I understand that the whole thing was about the relationship between the main character and Art and also his relationship with mortality but I was never really convinced but, above all, I never really cared. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didnā€™t really work me, I still think it is worth a look though , especially if you are interested in Italian movies.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 1 August 2011 10:58 (A review of City of Women)

There was a time when I started to discover the great classics and, of course, at some point, I got intrigued by Federico Fellini. From all his movies, the one I loved the most was by far ā€˜La stradaā€™ but, to be honest, I had a rather hard time to really connect with such huge classics like ā€˜La dolce vitaā€™ and ā€˜8Ā½ā€™ (Iā€™m actually planning to re-watch Ā at least ā€˜La dolce vitaā€™ in the near future though since I have it on DVD). However, later on, I have also watched this flick as well and even though it is probably one of the least appreciated movies directed by this director, I thought it was actually pretty good. I have to admit it, the whole thing was maybeĀ  too similar to '8 1/2' and it is probably why it was dismissed but I thought there was something quite mesmerizing about the damned thing (something I actually didnā€™t really feel with ā€˜8 1/2' to be honest). I donā€™t know, the fact that it was only focusing on his obsession about women seemed to work better for me somehow. Anyway, to conclude,Ā  I think this movie is actually quite underrated, I really liked it and it think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Federico Felliniā€™s work.Ā
