Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

An average movie

“To be honest, I gave up on this franchise a long time ago but, since this last instalment was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Like most guys from my generation, I grew up in the 90’s with these toys and cartoons so there was definitely some potential. However, ” read more

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Isla Fisher and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I wasn’t really convinced by the concept which did sound terribly gimmicky. And, yet, to my surprise, I h” read more

The Surfer
chosen by Henk Notes: This one turned out to be quite strange. Indeed, I can’t say I was expecting Nicolas Cage to show up in a thriller like this one taking place in Australia with no surfing whatsoever, in spite its title. Eventually, the end-result was an intriguing mind-f*ck but, to be honest, it never really became fascinating though. In my opinion, the main issue was that the material was just too slight. At least, there is no denying that the director, Lorcan Finnegan, did make the most of it though. Indeed, the mood was pretty neat and there was something rather dreamy not only about the location but also about the way it was visually presented. Concerning Nicolas Cage, he was not bad even though you might wonder if he was not completely out of place in an Australian thriller like this one (it was even pointed out by one of the other characters the fact that he didn’t sound at all like someone born there). Coming back on the story itself, the main asset was the cloud of mystery around, well, pretty much everything. Indeed, who was really this man? Was he dreaming all this? Who were all these local surfers (eventually, you get the name of only their leader, that’s how far they went to describe this group)? Who was the hobo? What was actually going on this damned beach? However, even though withholding information is an efficient way to create an ominous atmosphere, it is also a rather cheap artificial gimmick and, at the end of the day, I’m pretty sure I didn’t care one way or another. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Christmas movies so I was probably not the target audience for this material. A” read more

A good movie

“Since I really loved ‘Half Nelson’, I was quite eager to see what Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck did afterwards. The first interesting thing is how this movie completely stood out with the rest of their filmography and I wonder how they ended up directing this. Anyway, what I enjoyed the most about i” read more

Juror #2
Cast : Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Toni Collette, Leslie Bibb, J.K. Simmons What was it about? While serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, a family man finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma, one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict or free the wrong killer. My two cents: To be honest, the damned thing was probably the most disappointing movie I have seen released in 2024 after all. I know, it might sound harsh but I kept hearing that it was the best movie directed by Clint Eastwood in ages but, while I would agree that it was the least disappointing movie he has delivered in a while, I was still not really impressed though. As far as I was concerned, it felt like a modern rip-off of ’12 Angry Men’ to which they added a really convoluted twist. Indeed, before I watched this movie, I knew this specific juror would have something to do with this crime but I didn’t know he would turn out to be actually guilty of this specific crime which was, in my opinion, rather ridiculous. Seriously, what are the odds that something like this could happen? Even more egregious and/or annoying was the fact that the main character apparently discovered this during the trial at the same time with the audience. Again, seriously, was this guy living under a rock or something? It was concerning a high-profile murder trial taking place where he lived but, during the year between the alleged murder and the trial, he didn’t hear or read anything about it at all? So, as you can see, I didn’t care much about the whole setup and this was only the first 15 mins. Concerning the rest of the movie, sure, it was well made and the cast was solid but, basically, you get to see the main character feeling guilty and all which was all rather predictable but, above all, it was never really fascinating. Dead Man
Release date (U.S.) : ??? directed by : Gus Van Sant with : Colman Domingo, Bill Skarsgård, Al Pacino, Cary Elwes plot : On February 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis, entered the office of Richard Hall, president of the Meridian Mortgage Company, and took him hostage with a sawed-off shotgun wired with a "dead man's wire" from the trigger to Tony's own neck. Why do I want to see this ? To be honest, it has been almost 20 years since Van Sant did deliver something really good (same thing with Pacino by the way). However, he was and still is a really intriguing director which I have followed for about 30 years. On top of that, the story does sound really great so I will definitely check this one out.
