Nowhere Special
chosen by Ria Notes: Well, it probably turned out to be the saddest movie I have seen so far with the filmclub. Indeed, it was just so intense and it really touched me emotionally. Eventually, it was just heartbreaking to see this man who obviously had a rough life, who obviously deeply loved his child, who was probably one of the best parents I have seen in a movie, to face such an irredeemable and final death sentence. The little kid was also amazing and gave here a phenomenal child performance. Eventually, for 90 minutes, you have to watch these two human beings who were meant to be together, who worked so perfectly together, coming into terms with the fact that they will be separated, each in their own way, and this process was just so excruciating to behold. So, it was some strong stuff but it wasn’t completely flawless though. The first issue was that the whole thing was really predictable. For example, the way the single woman said and did exactly the right things was not exactly subtle. It was also rather odd that it never seemed to be an option to reach out to the biological mother to, at least, give her the option to take over this child. Finally, there was the fact that this man was completely isolated socially speaking which, of course, as a result, seriously amplified even more the connection between this father and his child but, to be honest, it felt also slightly manipulative. Anyway, even if it was maybe missing something to be really great, it was still an intense and heartbreaking drama. (Jul. 2022)

The Vampire
Notes: Even though Carl Theodor Dreyer himself was Danish, this movie really felt like it belonged to the German expressionism. It was also pretty obvious that it was produced at the end of the silent movies era as there were very few sounds and dialogues and most of the story was told through some (rather massive) cards with caption and some whole pages of a book dealing with vampires. I don’t know, maybe the damned thing was too random for my taste but there is no doubt that the atmosphere was grim and quite mesmerizing at the same time. Indeed, it’s rather difficult to imagine a vampire movie nowadays without either a rather heavy script or some huge action scenes. This one was actually much more straightforward and, when you think about it, really simple and, yet, its stripped-down aspect was really intriguing. Concerning the actors, they were apparently almost all non-professionals but even though they all had a striking look, I had a rather hard time to connect with any of them. It probably had to do with the fact that most of what we learned about them was through some title cards and not through the dialogues or their performances. Anyway, even if I wasn’t completely sold, it was still a solid watch.

A classic

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was included in the ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’ list, I was really eager to check it out. To be honest, I have to admit that I had a rather hard time to get into this movie. Maybe it had to do with the fact that it ” read more

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer
What is it about? This limited docu-series tells the true story of how one of the most notorious serial killers in American history was hunted down and brought to justice. My verdict: As you can see, like many others, I became a huge sucker for these Netflix true crime documentary miniseries dealing with some very notorious serial killers and this one was pretty good as well. I have to admit that I had never heard of Richard Ramirez before and this guy was just so messed up, a really nightmarish character. I wish they did go deeper into his personality and his background but the end-result was still quite interesting though.

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I thought the damned thing was not bad at all. Indeed, I really liked the realis” read more

The Ox-Bow Incident
Notes: To be honest, I’m usually not a huge fan of such vintage Westerns but this one actually really grabbed me. Indeed, it might seem to be a short and simple Western without much action and lots of dialogues instead. It’s too bad I saw it on YouTube without subtitles and I did struggle to follow the dialogues so I will probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, it turned out to be some kind of Western version of ‘12 Angry Men’ and even though it probably didn’t go so deep, it was still really effective and often quite fascinating to watch. Back then, it was actually quite a controversial movie, it was even a flop when it was released but I was amazed by how relevant it still is nowadays. Indeed, our digital world is dominated by fake news which did result, in the US, with the storming of the Capitol back in 2021. Sure, we don’t lynch people anymore (at least, I hope so) but, deep inside, we are apparently still the same. At least, in this movie, at the end, they all seemed to deeply regret their actions but I think, in reality, most people always find some excuse or some way to rationalize what they do or did. Concerning Henry Fonda, I should definitely watch more of his old movies because the guy was back then so charismatic and fascinating to behold. Unsurprisingly, it was one of his favorite movies.

An average movie

“So far, I haven’t been really impressed by the Pink Panther franchise but there was no way this instalment would be as awful as ‘Inspector Clouseau’ turned out to be so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, more than 10 years after ‘A Shot in the Dark’ was released, Blake Edwards a” read more
