The Sixth Sense
Notes: I remember when this movie came out as if it was yesterday. Indeed, I actually saw it in the USA when I was there on holiday. At the time, everybody was talking about this movie. Every time you would talk about movies someone would say at some point 'Have you seen The Sixth Sense? Dude, that was just awesome. I was just blown away by this twist ending !'. I have to admit it, I didn't get the twist before the end but, to be honest, I never felt it was such a strong ending. In my opinion, it was actually rather underwhelming as I thought it was a cheap way to give some supposedly 'deep' meaning to an otherwise decent story. I mean, the directing was pretty good, Bruce Willis gave a decent performance and Haley Joel Osment was definitely impressive but, in my opinion, the concept was actually completely bonkers. Indeed, why doesn’t Malcolm notice that he is not able to connect to his wife, his colleagues or anyone else? Well, simply because ghosts choose to see what they want to see... Just like all the other twists developed by Shyamalan in his next movies, it was a just terribly weak way to cover up some major plot holes. It's too bad because it was actually a really good story and it is a real shame that Shyamalan tricked the audience by making us believe that Malcolm was actually alive during the whole thing. I mean, seriously, what did it really add to the story? I have to admit that this movie is not bad at all and actually really entertaining but, in my opinion, this so-called great twist pretty much ruined a strong story.

LĂ©on: The Professional
Notes: I actually remember very well when it was released in France. Back then, before it became an international cult classic, it was a huge success in France and virtually everyone went to see it and bragged about how awesome the whole thing was. Personally, I saw it maybe a year later after its release and I was expecting something really really impressive but, eventually, I was amazed about how underwhelming the whole thing was. I mean, obviously, it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, the directing was solid (Luc Besson can definitely direct a movie) and Natalie Portman in her first part was pretty impressive but I still don’t think that it was really amazing. The point is that the story definitely had some potential but, not only it felt rather rotten (the director's cut had actually some pedophile love scenes between Jean Reno and Natalie Portman) but, above all, it felt terribly pretentious. Honestly, most of the dialogues were at best cheesy and most of the time even rather pathetic. At least, I’m not the only one who didn’t like this flick and both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel were rather dismissive towards the damned thing. Anyway, I have to admit that it is far from a being a bad movie but I simply don’t see what is supposed to be so great about it.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)
Notes: To be honest, I have to admit that I had actually never heard of the Harlem Cultural Festival that took place in 1969 but I’m not the only one. Indeed, while Woodstock became the most famous festival that ever took place, this festival was actually largely forgotten, at least, by the mainstream audience. What was even more surprising was that they actually did film everything but it took a staggering 50 years before someone finally released the damned thing. Apparently, back then, nobody cared about spreading this magnificent piece of Black power, love and creativity which was basically censored in spite of its actually very positive message. Concerning the festival itself, I have to admit that I didn’t know about half of the performers but it didn’t matter and they were all really good. The fact that appearing on this stage meant so much for them really transpired in their performances which were very often quite electrifying. Eventually, the only thing that prevented this movie from becoming really epic was the fact that they reduced 40 hours of footage to only 2 hours. I mean, the documentary about Woodstock was lasting 3 hours for a reason and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have had the same impact if it would have been shorter. In this case, with an extra hour or even more, they could have fleshed out even more some of the performances or some portraits of the artists and people involved. Still, it wasn’t a deal-breaker and the damned thing was really awesome to behold. For more info : Top 10 best movies 2021

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since the material was interesting and since it was available on Neflix, I thought I might as well check it out. I was also intrigued by the fact that, even though I did receive some solid reviews, it didn’t get much love afte” read more

On the Town
Notes: As a matter of fact, a few weeks before I watched this movie, I read a book about movies my wife bought for me and, in this book, they developed some interesting views about musicals. Indeed, according to the writer, back in those days, there was a really rigid production code in the USA and the musicals with their mix of reality and fantasy were a way to show things that were not really allowed. With this in mind, I might give musicals some extra credit in the future but, unfortunately, I wasn’t really blown away by this one though. I mean, I couldn’t help thinking that the whole thing was mostly a marketing stunt presenting Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra (who was at the peak of his popularity) together. Furthermore, even though the dance scenes were not bad, I thought they were actually rather underwhelming. And, of course, the story and the characters were terribly fluffy and, even though I’m fully aware it is a trademark of this genre, I always find difficult to care about what’s going on. Anyway, even if I thought it was slightly disappointing, it is still a classic.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Notes: I have to admit it, it is a pretty cool story, absolutely, I even think I read the book when I was a kid but, still, I wasn’t really blown away by this movie and I would say that I preferred Tim Burton’s version. Indeed, I forgot that it was a musical version and all those songs were pretty boring to me. Then, I’m sorry, but I wasn’t really impressed by Wonka’s factory. I mean, 40 years later, the scale was not really impressive and it didn’t look delicious (apparently, 1/3 of the set was actually eatable, even the chocolate river so they did actually try). Another thing that bothered me was that maybe half of the movie was about looking for those damned golden tickets and the rest of the movie felt pretty rushed. Finally, Gene Wilder gave a really good performance but I felt they only scratched the surface about this mysterious Willy Wonka figure and it would have been nice to learn a little more about him. Still, for a 40 years old feature, it still stand out from the other productions from that time.

Good Will Hunting
Notes: Personally, I never understood what was the fuss about this flick but since it has always been so popular (it is even in the Imdb top 250), I thought I should give it another shot. First of all, it was just really fun to see it again after such a long time, to see both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when they were still fresh and young and so eager to break through. Still, I’m afraid my opinion remained the same and, personally, I think it is one really overrated feature. Basically, it is just a really standard inspirational drama, no more no less, and it is pretty much the most straightforward movie ever directed by Gus Van Sant (unsurprisingly, it has been his most successful movie at the box-office so far). Take for example Robin Williams, the guy won an Academy award for his performance when, in fact, even though he did a decent job, it was just the typical gimmick he gives in his dramas. Concerning Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, they were actually pretty good and I liked how conflicted Will Hunting was but it wasn’t enough to make this movie really brilliant. I mean, I have to admit, it remains a well made drama but the whole thing was just way too predictable and pedestrian for my taste.

A bad movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since ‘Escape Plan’ was not bad at all, I thought I might as well check out this sequel. Well, not so long ago, I already saw ‘Backtrace’ starring Sylvester Stallone, it was pretty awful and, to be honest, this movie turned out to be ” read more

Escape Plan 2: Hades
Notes: Sure, I didn‘t expect the damned thing to be a masterpiece but the previous instalment was not bad and the concept had some potential. Indeed, movies dealing with prison breaks can be seriously entertaining, at least, when they are well made but it was definitely not the case here. Seriously, the opening scene was just so poorly shot and edited, it was some kind of mix of shaky cam with way too many quick cuts and the end-result was pretty much unwatchable. Then, a major appeal with ‘Escape Plan’ was obviously to see Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger finally working together (‘The Expendables’ doesn’t count because it was more a group effort and Schwarzenegger never played a major character in this franchise). Unfortunately, Schwarzenegger didn‘t show up this time around (probably a smart move from the Austrian Oak though) and, if you would believe the promotional material, he was apparently replaced by Dave Bautista which wasn‘t necessarily some bad news. However, it turned out that Bautista had a rather small part after all and showed up only for a couple of scenes. The bewildering thing is that it was actually the case for almost all the actors involved (Bautista, 50 Cent, Jaime King and even Stallone himself) as all of them showed up sporadically and usually for some rather meaningless scenes. Concerning the story itself, I have to admit that I have a weak spot for prison break movies but it was probably the most idiotic movie I have seen in this genre. Seriously, the whole thing looked so fake and pretty much nothing really made sense (How did they end up there? Why on Earth did they have to fight each other? What was supposed to be so great about this ‘sanctuary’?). At least, Xiaoming Huang was a badass martial-artist but it was pretty much the only positive thing about this cheap-ass sequel.
