An average movie

“I wasnā€™t expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. “To be honest, I didnā€™t have some really high expectations before watching this flick. In fact, I was even warned by a fellow listal member that it was a really unnecessary sequel (on the other hand, isnā€™t it the case with most sequels?!) but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might ” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Rooney Mara, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, like all movies dealing with pedophilia, it turned out to be extremely disturbing, even sickening. However, the approach they chose turned out to b” read more

Great Expectations
Notes: Since Iā€™m a huge fan of David Leanā€™s work, of course, I had to see this flick at some point and since it is considered as one of his best movies, I had some rather great expectations (pun intended). Eventually, even though I did like it, I canā€™t say I was really blown away by the whole thing. I donā€™t know, maybe it has to with the fact that I never really loved those Charles Dickensā€™ movie adaptations. Maybe I should try the books instead, if I recall correctly , the late Roger Ebert was a massive fan of these books. Anyway, it remains a pretty good flick though. Indeed, the cinematography was really nice, something expected from a David Lean production, and the acting was really solid as well. Another interesting element in the movie was that it featured Alec Guinness' first major screen role and it was also the first film he made with Lean (they would make eventually 6 movies together). Also, the fact that I first watched first Alfonso Cuaronā€™s version might I have influenced my views on this much older version. Anyway, even if this movie didnā€™t really quite blow me away, it is still a classic.

Johnny Guitar
Notes: To be honest, Iā€™m not a huge fan of such old Westerns. Anyway, in this genre, I have to admit it, this movie was not bad at all and I definitely had a weak spot for the damned thing. Indeed, it was especially neat to see a Western with a woman playing the lead and, even though Joan Crawford always thought that Mercedes McCambridge was stealing the show in this movie, I was above all impressed by Crawford after all. Eventually, the biggest issue with this movie (or biggest draw, depending on who you would ask) is that the story was rather over-the-top and, in my case, I thought it was rather difficult to take it really seriously. Anyway, even if this movie didnā€™t completely work for me, I still think it is probably one of the most interesting Westerns they made at the time.

Goldfinger
Notes: Even though 'Casino Royale' and 'Skyfall' were critically and financially hugely successful, even though Daniel Craig turned out to be a terrific James Bond, this flick still remains easily my favorite James Bond installment. Indeed, in my opinion, it is the only movie which perfectly mixed all the basic elements which you can find in this old institution. However, since it was only the 3rd movie with this legendary character, the makers were still really creative and not constantly repeating themselves (which is always the case nowadays). I mean, that's the charm and the curse of thoses movies, this familiarity, the fact that even before the movie has started, you really know 90% of what is going to happen, how it is going to happen and who is going to take care of it. In my opinion, it wasn't the case back then in 1964. Back then, they were still perfecting the formula and it will never be that good again. I mean, Sean Connery, the ultimate James Bond, was at the top of his game, the James Bond girls were mythic (it doesn't get much better than the gold painted girl and Pussy Galore), Auric Goldfinger was one of the best villains and there was a terrific title song by Shirley Basset. Above all, for once, I really enjoyed the plot, probably the best James Bond story. So, you may wonder why my rating is not higher since I really enjoyed this flick. The point is that, even with the best James Bond movie ever, I still think that the formula is rather limited and, to be honest, I have never been really a fan of those flicks. Still, it is a really fun and entertaining spy feature featuring the most famous spy ever.

Cross of Iron
Notes: When I think of Sam Peckinpah, I always think of 'The Wild Bunch' so it was rather interesting to see a WWII flick directed by him, for a change. To my surprise, I thought it was actually really good and I even think I enjoyed it more than 'The Wild Bunch' which is considered as Peckinpah's seminal classic. Indeed, it is a rather underrated war movie and, in my opinion, it is basically what 'Inglourious basterds' should have looked like: less talk and more badass action. Basically, as expected with Peckinpah, the tone was really dark and gloomy and it was really interesting to see the point of the view of the Germans for a change. On top of that, even though it is basically an action flick, it still managed to show how merciless war can be and the impact it has on the soldiers.

Ghost in the Shell
Notes: In Japanese animation, it is probably one of the most famous movies in this genre and it is indeed a rather fascinating feature, even though it can be rather challenging. Still, I really loved its mesmerising soundtrack and, even 20 years later, the animation is pretty impressive with some rather breathtaking scenes. However, the whole thing did feel rather outdated during the dialogues scenes as there was no movement whatsoever, except for the lips of the characters when they talked. Concerning the story, it is probably one of the most philosophical animated movies out there which makes the whole thing equally interesting but also difficult to follow and, sometimes, downright confusing. It is basically a movie that you can or should watch several times just to get a better grip on the story and on the interesting concepts and ideas developed. However, to be honest, even after watching the damned thing 2 or 3 times, I'm still not sure if I understood everything.

Bringing Up Baby
Notes: It turned out to be one of those typical screwball comedies from the 30's but, to be honest, I have never been a huge fan of the genre. Indeed, even though the plot was supposed to be ridiculous and shouldn't be taken too seriously, I still had a hard time to care about what was going on. On top of that, during the first 10 minutes, I wasn't really convinced by Cary Grant playing a nerd. Fortunately, as soon as Katherine Hepburn finally showed up, the whole thing started to grow on me. Indeed, I thought she was pretty amazing and, with Cary Grant, they had some really nice chemistry and the whole thing became then quite hilarious. I have to admit it, it had been a while since I laughed so much. However, during the second half, the whole thing did loose some steam but it was still quite enjoyable anyway. Anyway, even if I'm not a big fan of such screwballs comedies, this one is a classic and I really enjoyed it.

Wild Strawberries
Notes: To be honest, as usual with this director, I had a rather hard time to connect with the damned thing. It didn't help that I saw a very poor version on YouTube so maybe I should give it another chance in the future. Still, the fact that I didn't connect with this movie was probably because I'm not smart enough and not because it wasn't a good movie, that's for sure. Eventually, as usual with Bergman's work, I enjoyed more thinking afterwards about this movie than actually watching it. First of all, even though our Western world is getting older and older, we still get very few movies dealing with old age and this movie is easily one of the best about this subject. Indeed, through his whole life, the main character was really successful professionally but he didn't care at all about his relationship with the people around him but, in his twilight years, he is looking back to his past, which is rather usual, and starts to show more compassion towards the few people still around him. However, if this change of attitude and way of thinking made complete sense with the main character, I think it was rather unbelievable that Marianne would suddenly change her mind about him and think that he was a great guy just after spending one road trip with him. Anyway, even if it didn't completely blow me away, it is still a major classic.
