A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it bought a brand new awesome TV, I thought I might as well check it out again on Disney+. One of the (very few) positive effects of the Corona pandemic is that we got to see a whopping 4 Marvel features in a single year. In this case, even though ‘Black Widow’” read more

Lost in Translation
Notes: This movie is considered as Sofia Coppola's masterpiece and, with this mind, the first time around, I had some high expectations but, to be honest, it didn't really blow me away then. Well, even after rewatching the damned thing, I still ended up with some mixed feelings. Eventually, even though I was able to see that it was indeed something quite special, I had a rather hard time to connect with the whole thing. I don’t think it was because it was too slow or too boring or that not enough was happening, I think it was more because I didn’t care much about the characters and what they were going through. I don’t think Bill Murray or Scarlett Johansson should be blamed though as they both gave some very good performances and the directing was really solid as well. Eventually, I think that this movie gives a rather depressing view on travelling and I think it provides a good explanation on why I don't miss travelling that much. Indeed, I always dreamed about going to Japan, especially Tokyo, but after watching this movie, you can come to the conclusion that there is nothing really special about this city since huge cities like this one all look alike. Anyway, even if it didn’t really love this flick, it wasn't bad at all, far from it.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, at first, I thought it would be another half-baked drama starring Hilary Swank (that her career turned out to be a disappointment after no less than” read more

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably rewatch it at some point. In fact, my wife is actually a huge fan of those thrillers involving serial-killers and I'm pretty sure this movie is her favorite one in this genre. Personally, I actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, of course, it is a classic, it is very well made and entertaining and Anthony Hopkins was just great in a star making performance. And yet, this movie exactly embodies what bothers me in this genre. Indeed, while my wife might argue that those things actually really happens in real life, I tend to roll my eyes in pure disbelief during the whole thing. The worst gimmick in this genre, in my opinion and aside of the obligatory twist ending, is the whole concept of the omnipotent serial killer who hears and sees pretty much everything, can apparently predict the future and has access to a limitless amount of cash. I mean, don't misunderstand me, I do like this movie, it is really entertaining but, in my opinion, even though it might be the best movie in this genre, it still uses some of his worst tricks and therefore it makes it difficult for me to be completely blown away by the whole thing.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen many very old classics and I have noticed that it is very often hit-and-miss with such timeless features. Indeed, with some of them, I could see right away why they have been heralded through all the years but, for some others, it seems more that they were groundbreaking when they were released but they seem to be rather dated nowadays. Well, in this case, with this movie, it thought it was pretty good and, from a technical point of view, Eisenstein was quite a genius who came up with some movie technics that were never used before but, still, was it really such a fascinating story? I’m not so sure. I mean, it is probably the best propaganda film ever made but, even so, the propaganda genre has its limitations and, as a result, this movie still didn’t really blow me away. Anyway, even if it didn’t become one of my all time favorite movies, it was still a really interesting watch and it is definitely worth a look.

“I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was starring Johnny Depp, I was still eager to check it out. Well, I won’t blame Brad Furman who’s a solid director as the whole thing looked decent enough and I think he did what he could with this material. Indeed, to be honest, the ” read more
