What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)

The Magnificent Seven
Notes: I always had a weak spot for Yul Brynner and even more for Steve McQueen. James Coburn and Charles Bronson were also some fine actors so, with such a cast, I really had to see this flick at some point. Eventually, it was pretty good but I still think the original directed by Akira Kurosawa ('Seven samurai') was actually much better. It didn’t help that I saw 'Seven samurai' before so the whole thing didn’t feel really ‘fresh’. Still, it was definitely entertaining and it was above all rather fun to see Steve McQueen, originally just a supporting part, trying to upstage Yul Brynner who was at the time a bigger star. Anyway, even if it didn’t really blow me away, it is still a classic.

Notes: This flick is probably one of the most famous directed by Akira Kurosawa and therefore I was really eager to check it out. Indeed, it is above all famous because Sergio Leone made a few years later a little remake called ‘For a Fistful of Dollars’ and it was at the time a big mess because they didn’t give any credit to Kurosawa. Eventually, after watching ‘For a Fistful of Dollars’ so many times, it was rather difficult for me to really get into this flick to be honest. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it would have been the first time I saw this story but it is something you should always try to avoid : watching the remake before the original version. Still, it is definitely an entertaining samurai flick with some very good directing by Akira Kurosawa and a solid performance by the always dependable Toshiro Mifune.

Underground
Notes: In the 90's, Kusturica was one of the most important directors in the world and I was a big fan of his work. Unfortunately, we haven't heard much from him during the 00's and that's too bad. Anyway, back in the 90’s, after making his only US production so far starring no one less than Johnny Depp (‘Arizona Dream’ and it is indeed quite marvelous), Kusturica went back to (ex-)Yugoslavia to make what many consider his magnum opus and, for the second time around, the Serbian director won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Eventually, even though I did like it at the time (I saw it in the movie theater when it was released), I wasn’t exactly blown away. I guess I was just too young at the time (I think I must have been 15-16 years old when I first saw it) and since it is a rather complex feature with many layers, quite frankly, it went a little bit over my head. Still, it is quite an impressive piece of work, basically a big epic feature about Yugoslavian history.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Shailene Woodley and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how disappointing the damned thing actually turned out to be. I have” read more

Le Cercle rouge
Notes: Eventually, it turned out to be a fairly realistic but also really stylish crime thriller. Indeed, what I enjoyed the most was the expert directing of Jean-Pierre Melville who managed to deliver such a spellbinding mood without even using some music (except during the heist scene). Still, I have to admit that I did struggle with the story through. I mean, sure, it was entertaining but there were some stuff that kept bothering me. For example, why would Mattei go with Vogel by train all by himself? It didn't make much sense. Then, there was this combination of two completely different stories, the escape and the heist, which felt rather jarring to me. Finally, there was the fact that, even though you spend more than two hours with these men, you barely learn anything about them after all. I get that, as pointed out by Roger Ebert, all that really matters was that they behaved as men of honor in a world with a very specific code but, to be honest, I'm not so sure if I really cared though. Still, the damned thing was just so well made and it is pretty obvious that it must have been a major inspiration for many directors that came afterwards such as Quentin Tarantino for example.

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it bought a brand new awesome TV, I thought I might as well check it out again on Disney+. One of the (very few) positive effects of the Corona pandemic is that we got to see a whopping 4 Marvel features in a single year. In this case, even though ‘Black Widow’” read more
