Notes: Honestly, I think it's rather difficult to review this flick. Indeed, even though it was rather long (more than 130 minutes), especially for a silent feature, it was actually supposed to be 6 hours! After watching the whole thing, you wonder how Eric von Stroheim managed to get 6 hours from this story but, I guess, weâll never know. So, how can you review a movie when you have seen only a fraction of it? Many of us (include myself) blame Peter Jackson for indulging himself with overlong movies but, with von Stroheim, it goes to a whole different level and he must have been one of the most decadent directors that ever lived. As a matter of fact, at the time, this movie was the most expensive ever made and it figures. Indeed, even though the action takes place in Monte Carlo, and it seems as if they went there to make the movie, they actually recreated the whole thing at Universal Studios with some impressive accuracy in the details. Personally, I enjoyed above all von Stroheim who, of course, played the lead and he gave one of the best silent performances I have seen. To be honest, even though I have a weak spot for con-artists, nothing much happened during the whole thing but it was still pretty good though.

Notes: In fact, I remember it very well when it was released in France. Indeed, it was a huge critical and commercial success, everybody was talking about this flick to the point that it was even getting slightly annoying. Anyway, I still saw it in the movie theater back then but, to be honest, even though I really admired the work done, it never completely blew me away though. I mean, it was definitely visually really neat, the soundtrack by Yann Tiersen was just mesmerizing and it was a fun movie, no doubt about it. Eventually, it might be the quirkiest movie ever made, even the best movie in this genre but Iâm afraid its quirkiness actually backfired. I mean, the whole thing was all nice and cute but, in my opinion, it is ultimately also rather shallow. Indeed, even though the whole movie tried very hard to convince the viewers that AmĂ©lie Poulain was a fascinating girl who will change our life forever, I thought she was cute but not much more than that. It was like those random anecdotes popping up every 30 secondes about the characters or life in general. Sure, it was entertaining but were these little scenes really so fascinating or life changing? Not really, at least, it wasn't for me. Anyway, even if Iâm not a huge fan of this movie, it is still pretty good though.

“To be honest, I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Joe Carnahan and since there was a solid cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, the whole concept of using the âGroundhog Dayâ gimmick for an action flick and mixing it with som” read more

Notes: Iâm always pretty excited when Iâm about to watch for the 1st time a movie directed by a renown director and this flick was my first Dario Argento feature. So, you can imagine I had some rather high expectations. Eventually, I thought it was pretty good but I canât say I was really blown away though. I mean, it was a solid thriller, definitely, but, in my opinion, it was just a little bit better than your average thriller, not much more. Still, it doesnât mean it wasnât an enjoyable flick. Indeed, Argento managed to create a great tense mood and I loved the soundtrack provided by some band called âGoblinâ. Furthermore, ever since I saw David Hemmings in â Blow Upâ , I had a weak spot for this actor and he was pretty good here, even though it was rather odd to choose a British actor to play the main character in this Italian production. However, at the end of the day, in my opinion, it remains one of those typically far-fetched plots inherent to the genre and I always have a hard time to enjoy a thriller when the whole thing gets too preposterous. Anyway, it is still a very well made and entertaining flick.

Notes: To be honest, the first time around, I have to admit that it didn't care much for the damned thing and, at the time, I thought it was just a rather tedious Western starring John Wayne, possibly one of the most boring actors that ever lived. Still, since this movie is considered as one of the best ever made, I was always eager to give it another shot and I'm glad I finally did. Indeed, this time around, I was finally able to see what was so good about this flick. First of all, it gives an interesting look on the settlers, these pioneers, who were finally starting to have a fairly ordinarily life but, at the same time, there was always the possibility of some swift burst of violence which could wipe them out within minutes. Then, you had this fascinating and complex main character, Ethan Edwards, who, maybe subconsciously, might never ever be able to settle with a farm and work on his land, and instead would rather spend 5 years roaming all the West to find his lost niece which seemed like an impossible mission. There was also the fact that the guy was more or less a psychopath who had such a hatred of the Indians that he might kill his beloved niece if she had the misfortune to choose to become an Indian. Still, to be honest, I have to admit that not everything really worked for me. For example, you never actual have the feeling that they have been so long on the road or that they have covered so much territory. Furthermore, another problem I had was that, towards the end, Debbie seemed to change her mind way too easily which was very convenient to neatly wrap everything up for their happy-ending. Anyway, even if I'm still not a huge fan, it was still definitely a really solid Western.

Notes: It has been a while since I have watched this flick and, to be honest, I think I might have been too young when I first watched it. Indeed, at around 14 years old, I started to watch the major classics and I watched them ferociously at a very quick pace. The problem is that, even if a movie is great, sometimes, the timing is not right and it goes way over your head and I think thatâs what happened to me with this flick. Thatâs the tricky thing about Krzysztof Kieslowskiâs work, it is really interesting and intriguing, but not always really easy to digest, Iâm afraid. I mean, it is full of symbolic and sub-text and, like I said before, I didnât get much of it and it might need a re-watch at some point. Still, there is no doubt that Juliette Binoche (at the time, probably the greatest French actress at work) was very good, she gave one of her best performances and Kieslowski had a sober but effective directing style.
