Notes: Back in those days, Katharine Hepburn was the best actress around and it has always been a pleasure to watch one of her movies. Since this flick was one of her classics, I was really eager to check it out and it turned out to be an interesting romantic-comedy. I mean, you had the usual slapstick common for this period but it had also some actual serious thoughts about women rights. Actually, I think they tried to deal with a sensitive subject but, to make it more bearable to watch, they did hide it behind an innocent comedy so the viewers back then wouldn't be shocked with what was actually a critic on our modern society. In fact, I wonder if they could make such a comedy nowadays. Eventually, the issue would be that we 'think' that man and woman are equal so it wouldn't work but it could be interesting. Anyway, it was still an enjoyable romantic-comedy with some strong chemistry between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Bambi
Notes: Back then, they spent years and a fortune to get it right. Basically, Walt Disney really wanted to make the animals look realistic but he still wanted to keep the cartoony feeling at the same time which was pretty tricky. Eventually, the end result was quite gorgeous and it is to this day still one of their most beautiful productions. Furthermore, they also managed to seamlessly combine drama and humor. Also, back in those days, they were still willing to take some risks and the iconic scene involving the death of Bambi's mother must be one of the most heartbreaking animated moments ever produced. It's too bad that this tragic event seemed to be rather quickly forgotten and the rest of the movie with a teen-aged Bambi didn’t work as well as when he was just an infant which was just pretty much enchanting. Furthermore, this movie also introduced one of their most enduring and annoying trademarks, the talking animals. To be honest, with this movie, it was ok but I still think it made the whole thing rather childish and condescending. On top of that, they would keep using this gimmick over and over again with their following production and the results would be always disappointing. However, in spite of its flaws, it is still pretty much a great achievement and another timeless classic from Disney though.

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but since I’m planning to see ‘Glass Onion’ in a couple of weeks, I was quite eager to first rewatch it with my wife, especially since she didn’t see it yet. Well, even if I’m not sure she really cared for it (she really didn’t like Daniel Craig’s character at ” read more

Knives Out
Notes: Basically, it turned out to be a very classic murder mystery but I still really enjoyed it though. Above all, I think was very well written and it was probably by far the smartest script delivered by Rian Johnson so far. Indeed, it seemed that the clue around Harlan Thrombey’s sudden death was given fairly early on but, obviously, the whole thing turned out to be slightly more intricate than that. Furthermore, there was such a great cast involved (Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Christopher Plummer, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell) and they were all game, especially Daniel Craig who definitely delivered here one of his best performances. It’s too bad that Blanc was disappearing from time to time when they would focus on some other characters because the guy was so much fun. Concerning the rest of the characters, most of them turned out to be barely developed after all but I guess it was rather inevitable with a big cast like this one. Eventually, the only thing that slightly did bother me was the whole gimmick around Marta puking each time she tells a lie. Indeed, I thought it was actually rather weak and the fact that she was one of the very few characters who actually knew almost everything made it rather easy for Benoit Blanc to eventually crack this case. Anyway, even if the damned thing was maybe nothing really ground-breaking, it was still seriously entertaining.

Gunga Din
Notes: Well, to be honest, it took me a while to get into this flick. Indeed, I was really bothered by this ‘White Men Burden's’ crap and, you can say whatever you want but the damned thing was just really discriminating towards the natives (Basically, they were either portrayed as some obedient servants or some psychotic killers). However, I have to admit that I was still swept away by the whole thing which was basically some rather old fashioned action-adventure flick. Back then, they included in their action movies some fist fighting, sword fighting, shootings and explosions. Furthermore, Cary Grant was pretty awesome and, in this movie, you could really see the uncanny resemblance with George Clooney. Eventually, it is quite obvious that this movie has been a huge influence for many adventure flicks that came afterwards (the first that came to my mind was, of course, 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom').

Evil Dead II
Notes: Eventually, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and I think it is one of the rare sequels to be better than its predecessor. Indeed, they took pretty much the same elements, the horror and the comedy, but they really pushed the formula to the next level this time around. Above all, their masterstroke was to focus on Ash. Indeed, in the first movie, Ash was just some random and boring guy who just somehow survived at the end but it is with this sequel that he finally became this iconic character and easily one of the best protagonists ever displayed in a horror franchise. Seriously, the first 20-30 minutes were just so damned entertaining thanks to a pitch-perfect performance by Bruce Campbell and the look on his face thoughout his ordeal was just priceless. Unfortunately, as soon as some of other rather random characters showed up, it became much more generic and, from that point, the story went on auto-pilot which was too bad. I mean, it was still quite entertaining but it was much stronger when Ash was all alone. Anyway, Sam Raimi definitely delivered here a really strong sequel.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since ‘Spring Breakers’ had been pretty wild, I thought I might as well check out Harmony Korine’s next directing effort. First of all, his previous movie made apparently enough waves so he had for the first time a cast fi” read more

Alice in Wonderland
Notes: It is probably one of the best stories ever adapted by Disney, it definitely had some potential and, eventually, the end-result was indeed probably their wildest movie. However, I'm afraid it didn't completely work though. Basically, from the moment Alice went into this rabbit hole, she basically never stopped running. As a result, the action and characters were just relentlessly frenetic and, to be honest, it wore me down at some point. I think this movie should have been slightly longer with some moments for the audience to take a breath and to be able to handle what they just saw. Instead, the only moments when the action slowed down a bit where during the songs which were quite numerous but it is something I never really enjoyed in the Disney animated features and I don't think that any of them was really remarkable. Finally, from a technical point of view, the animation was fine but it was far from being Disney's most gorgeous movie. At least, it remains a wild tale which allowed a massive burst of creativity from the animation studio and Alice was also one of the best female characters delivered by Disney so far, at least, she was something else than the usual helpless princess waiting for a prince to save her.
