An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but, since I have a weak spot for Kristen Bell, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, like most of the movies starring Melissa McCarthy, I just really struggled to care about the damned thing. I mean, sure, I have t” read more

Notes: Well, it has been a while since I saw a Japanese comedy and it was definitely a weird and original movie but I really enjoyed it. Basically, most of the movie was about the quest of creating a great noodle restaurant and even though it was considered as a tribute to the classic Westerns, especially the ones starring Clint Eastwood, it mostly reminded me of 'Shichinin no samurai'. But this movie went way beyond that and it kept throwing some really random scenes but still always linked to food. For example, one particular scene involved a man and woman endlessly swapping an egg yolk from each other mouths and, to be honest, it was easily one of the most disgusting scenes I have ever seen. Still, it was a really fun and unique movie, the food looked amazing, it made me so hungry and I wish I could go to Japan just to taste some of these dishes. Anyway, even if I'm not sure if I would consider this movie a masterpiece, it was still pretty neat though.

The Pink Panther
Notes: Since I kept hearing some good things about this franchise, I was really eager to check it out. Above all, after watching the dismal version starring Steve Martin, I was really wondering if it was any good. Eventually, I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, Peter Sellers is really amazing in this flick and he gave her one of the best comic performances I have ever seen. What's amazing in this performance is that, even though Clouseau was really clumsy and clueless, Sellers never pushed the boundary too far and, as a result, the character always remained believable and compelling to watch. The best thing is that Clouseau was actually just a small part but he completely upstaged the other characters which was something I have rarely seen before. Unfortunately, even though Clouseau was pretty awesome, the rest of characters were barely interesting and/or entertaining and the same goes concerning the story itself. Basically, while watching this flick, you just keep waiting Sellers to pop back during some rather boring stretches but it was definitely worth the wait.

In the Mood for Love
Notes: In fact, I did see this flick in the movie theater when it was released almost 20 years ago and, at the time, it was a massive critical success so I had some rather high expectations. I don’t know, maybe I was too young but, at the time, even though I did like it, I can't say I thought it was great like everyone seemed to think. Indeed, I thought it was a little bit frustrating and I wish this couple would just kiss each other and move on with their life instead of remaining stuck for some rather obscure reasons. And, yet, after re-watching the damned thing, I have to admit that I was really impressed this time around. To be honest, I was still not really fascinated by the story but the whole thing looked just so amazing, it is easily Wong Kar-Wai's best directing effort and I would go further and I argue that it is one of the most gorgeous movies ever made.

What is it about? In 19th-century Canada, a psychiatrist weighs whether a murderess should be pardoned due to insanity. My verdict: To be honest, I can’t remember how I actually ended up watching this mini-series. Maybe because it was some kind of Canadian All-Star game involving Sarah Polley (writer), Mary Harron (director), Sarah Gadon (main actress), hell, even David Cronenberg showed up for a small part. Eventually, I have to admit that the whole thing looked amazing, the directing was really solid and there is no doubt that Gadon was quite mesmerizing to behold in, by far, the best performance of her career. And, yet, I have my doubt that this story really required 4,5 hours. Seriously, I wonder if it wouldn’t have more efficient in a 2 or 3 hours movies instead. Still, it was a decent watch though.

The Shape of Water
Notes: Well, as usual with Guillermo del Toro, even though I did admire the work done and even though it turned to be quite enjoyable, to be honest, it didn't really blow me away though. Still, you have to give del Toro some credit as he once again has delivered another visually gorgeous picture with some really solid directing and the whole cast gave some strong performances. Unfortunately, eventually, I'm afraid I just didn't care much about this story. Basically, it was a decent romantic fairy-tale, no doubt about it, but what bothered me the most was how predictable the whole thing turned out to be. I mean, you just need to have a glimpse of the poster and you already know what will happen during the whole duration and, if you watch the trailer, it's even worse but that's something that can be said about most trailers. At least, with 'El laberinto del fauno', another del Toro picture I have always struggled to feel some connection with, I was still wondering what would happen during the whole thing. Anyway, even if I wasn't really dazzled by this movie, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look.

“The most interesting about this movie is that it came at a turning point in Woody Allen's career. Indeed, until that point, in spite of the dramatic shenanigans in his private life, Allen had managed to release one movie virtually every year for almost 50 years without any trouble whatsoever. Black Narcissus
Notes: Back in the 40’s, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger made some really lavish productions during which what was considered by many movie viewers as the Golden Age of British cinema. With this movie, once again, the production value was quite impressive and it is hard to believe that the whole thing was shot in a studio and not on location. Indeed, the decors, the sets, the colors were just amazing to watch. I was also amazed that Kanchi, supposedly a native girl, was actually played by Jean Simmons, a British actress. Unfortunately, to be honest, the story didn’t turn out to be anything really mindblowing. Basically, it was about 5 nons who went to live in a convent in the Himalaya and they all became more or less crazy. Even though this set-up could have been interesting, they spent just too much time to make sure that the whole thing looked great instead of expanding the psychological turmoil of the characters. I was also bothered about their attitude towards the natives who were described as either 'primitive', 'childish', 'stupid' or 'ignorant'. Such a patronizing and discriminating attitude was unfortunately rather common back then. Anyway, even if it didn’t really blow me away, it was still a very well made drama.

Notes: Back in those days, Katharine Hepburn was the best actress around and it has always been a pleasure to watch one of her movies. Since this flick was one of her classics, I was really eager to check it out and it turned out to be an interesting romantic-comedy. I mean, you had the usual slapstick common for this period but it had also some actual serious thoughts about women rights. Actually, I think they tried to deal with a sensitive subject but, to make it more bearable to watch, they did hide it behind an innocent comedy so the viewers back then wouldn't be shocked with what was actually a critic on our modern society. In fact, I wonder if they could make such a comedy nowadays. Eventually, the issue would be that we 'think' that man and woman are equal so it wouldn't work but it could be interesting. Anyway, it was still an enjoyable romantic-comedy with some strong chemistry between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Bambi
Notes: Back then, they spent years and a fortune to get it right. Basically, Walt Disney really wanted to make the animals look realistic but he still wanted to keep the cartoony feeling at the same time which was pretty tricky. Eventually, the end result was quite gorgeous and it is to this day still one of their most beautiful productions. Furthermore, they also managed to seamlessly combine drama and humor. Also, back in those days, they were still willing to take some risks and the iconic scene involving the death of Bambi's mother must be one of the most heartbreaking animated moments ever produced. It's too bad that this tragic event seemed to be rather quickly forgotten and the rest of the movie with a teen-aged Bambi didn’t work as well as when he was just an infant which was just pretty much enchanting. Furthermore, this movie also introduced one of their most enduring and annoying trademarks, the talking animals. To be honest, with this movie, it was ok but I still think it made the whole thing rather childish and condescending. On top of that, they would keep using this gimmick over and over again with their following production and the results would be always disappointing. However, in spite of its flaws, it is still pretty much a great achievement and another timeless classic from Disney though.
