Judas and the Black Messiah
Notes: I have to admit that I didnā€™t know much about Fred Hampton and it was really neat to learn more about this inspiring guy. Indeed, that he had accomplished so much and that he had reached such wisdom at such a young age was just really impressive and it would have been interesting to find some actors who were actually around the same age of their characters (Indeed, Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield were both at least 10 years older than their characters). Still, there is no denying that Kaluuya and Stanfield both delivered such strong performances, they were both quite pitch-perfect and seriously spellbinding to behold. So, the whole thing was strong and delivered an important message in the process and, yet, it was still missing something to completely win me over though. First of all, even though it was dealing with a really interesting story, the whole thing was still rather predictable. Indeed, from the moment you see Bill O'Neal meeting FBI agent Roy Mitchell for the first time, everything else happening afterwards was hardly surprising. I wonder also if it wouldnā€™t have worked better if it would have been more nuanced. Indeed, even with the most controversial black character, Bill O'Neal, they displayed a lot of compassion (basically, the guy was pressured by the FBI to work for them) whereas most of the white characters didnā€™t get the same curtesy. I mean, Martin Sheen was praised for his performance playing some kind of monstruous version of J. Edgar Hoover but, to be honest, it was borderline caricatural. Anyway, even if it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still a fascinating tale with 2 awesome performances.

The Irishman
Notes: Of course, like many other movie buffs, I had been anxiously waiting for this movie. Indeed, after almost 25 years, Martin Scorsese was working again with Robert De Niro on a massive gangster epic involving an impressive cast including the likes of Al Pacino. I mean, this combo Scorsese-De Niro-Pacino sounded already like movie heaven and when the critics turned out to be wild enthusiast, my expectations went sky high. Well, eventually, I find it rather difficult to judge this movie after all and, to be honest, I wasnā€™t really blown like I was expecting to be. First of all, even though the CGI deaging of the main cast had pretty much doubled the costs of the production, I didnā€™t feel it was really convincing. Seriously, I was constantly wondering what age their characters were supposed to be and it was pretty obvious through the whole duration that all the actors (Robert de Niro (75), Al Pacino (78) and Joe Pesci (75)) were so much older than their respective characters. Even if ā€˜Gemini Manā€™ was a major flop and a rather average action flick, at least, the 20 year old version of Will Smith was just mindblowing to behold. Concerning the character themselves, I thought that Russell Bufalino was actually the most interesting one. Indeed, if Al Pacino delivered a solid performance, to be honest, Jimmy Hoffa felt rather clueless or at least really reckless considering the way he handled the threats from the mob. Concerning Frank Sheeran, De Niro was fine as well but I was missing some kind of drive behind his actions. Still, even if this story might seem to be pretty basic, it was not a simple movie, especially due to the fact that it was Scorseseā€™s longest movie so far and I think I would need to rewatch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing.

Notes: Well, after working with Roland Emmerich on many blockbusters, apparently, Dean Devlin thought he could also direct his own disaster flick. Eventually, it was at least quite an achievement that Devlin managed to deliver something worse than anything delivered by Emmerich so far. Itā€™s too bad because the idea of making a disaster flick around climate change was intriguing and the damned thing actually had some potential. Unfortunately, I turned out to be one of these blockbusters which try to look very smart but end up being incredibly dumb. I mean, their first dumb move was to choose Gerard Butler to play some genius scientist. Seriously, there was not a single thing that he said that actually sounded convincing. On the other hand, Jim Sturgess was not much better and delivered another really weak performance (on top of that, the fact that this ā€™superā€™ scientistā€™s brother would work for the staff of the US president was just some really lazy writing). Concerning the rest of the cast (Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Andy Garcia, Ed Harris, Robert Sheehan, Mare Winningham, Zazie Beetz), only Zazie Beetz managed to be interesting/entertaining in a just a few scenes, all the rest was just wasted playing some really poorly written characters. Coming back to the ā€™masterā€™ plan of the bad guy, if you destroy the whole Earth, how was it going to bring back the USA back on top?!?

Notes: Well, it has been a while since I saw a Japanese comedy and it was definitely a weird and original movie but I really enjoyed it. Basically, most of the movie was about the quest of creating a great noodle restaurant and even though it was considered as a tribute to the classic Westerns, especially the ones starring Clint Eastwood, it mostly reminded me of 'Shichinin no samurai'. But this movie went way beyond that and it kept throwing some really random scenes but still always linked to food. For example, one particular scene involved a man and woman endlessly swapping an egg yolk from each other mouths and, to be honest, it was easily one of the most disgusting scenes I have ever seen. Still, it was a really fun and unique movie, the food looked amazing, it made me so hungry and I wish I could go to Japan just to taste some of these dishes. Anyway, even if I'm not sure if I would consider this movie a masterpiece, it was still pretty neat though.

The Pink Panther
Notes: Since I kept hearing some good things about this franchise, I was really eager to check it out. Above all, after watching the dismal version starring Steve Martin, I was really wondering if it was any good. Eventually, I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, Peter Sellers is really amazing in this flick and he gave her one of the best comic performances I have ever seen. What's amazing in this performance is that, even though Clouseau was really clumsy and clueless, Sellers never pushed the boundary too far and, as a result, the character always remained believable and compelling to watch. The best thing is that Clouseau was actually just a small part but he completely upstaged the other characters which was something I have rarely seen before. Unfortunately, even though Clouseau was pretty awesome, the rest of characters were barely interesting and/or entertaining and the same goes concerning the story itself. Basically, while watching this flick, you just keep waiting Sellers to pop back during some rather boring stretches but it was definitely worth the wait.

In the Mood for Love
Notes: In fact, I did see this flick in the movie theater when it was released almost 20 years ago and, at the time, it was a massive critical success so I had some rather high expectations. I donā€™t know, maybe I was too young but, at the time, even though I did like it, I can't say I thought it was great like everyone seemed to think. Indeed, I thought it was a little bit frustrating and I wish this couple would just kiss each other and move on with their life instead of remaining stuck for some rather obscure reasons. And, yet, after re-watching the damned thing, I have to admit that I was really impressed this time around. To be honest, I was still not really fascinated by the story but the whole thing looked just so amazing, it is easily Wong Kar-Wai's best directing effort and I would go further and I argue that it is one of the most gorgeous movies ever made.
