Ferris Bueller
Notes: Honestly, I'm not a fan of John Hughes' work but since this movie is a huge 80's classic, I was really eager to check it out and I had some pretty high expectations. Eventually, even though I enjoyed most of it and thought it was indeed pretty good, I still can't say I was blown away by the whole thing though. I mean, it was nice and entertaining, I was smiling from time to time but there was nothing really hilarious or fascinating about the whole thing whatsoever in my opinion. Furthermore, Ferris Bueller is apparently supposed to be this amazingly cool high-school dude but I thought he was just some average teenager who actually tends to be rather obnoxious and not really awesome or inspiring. In my opinion, to be honest, I think the whole thing is actually rather dated and its status of great classic is vastly overblown. One funny thing is that even though Matthew Broderick got his breakthrough by playing the coolest guy around the block, he would spend most of the rest of his career portraying some emotionally challenged and rather constipated characters. Still, even though I don’t think it was really that amazing , I have to admit it, it remains a well made and entertaining teen comedy.

Hawkeye
What is it about? Series based on the Marvel Comics superhero Hawkeye, centering on the adventures of Young Avenger, Kate Bishop, who took on the role after the original Avenger, Clint Barton. My verdict: Well, once again, even if it was nothing ground-breaking, I have to admit that I actually enjoyed the damned thing. Indeed, the master move from Marvel was that each miniseries that came out in 2021 was completely different then the others that came before. It's especially a burst of fresh air after all these huge blockbusters delivered by Marvel which were all fun and well made but, after more than 25 movies, the formula is getting pretty stale, especially with their last outings.

Notes: Well, even though it turned out to be pretty good, I can't say it really blew me away though. I mean, there was some very good stuff and it could have been a great movie but it didn't completely worked in my opinion. First of all, this movie will be forever remembered for Dean's performance and while he was indeed very good, his character was actually the 3rd wheel in this romance. Indeed, the movie was in fact about Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson's love story and family life and, in spite of Dean's effort to steal the show, his complex character didn't have much impact after all. Concerning the main story, I was also bothered by the fact that Leslie had such an impact on her husband but it didn't work the way around, he didn't seem to have such an impact on her which was a failed opportunity. Furthermore, in the 3rd act, all the children had a specific sub-plot which was just too much, especially with Dennis Hopper's character who not only refused to take over the ranch but also got married with some Mexican girl. As a result, they tried to handle too many topics and they should have removed some elements to remain better focused. And, yet, in spite of its flaws, it was still a solid epic though.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick and since it was directed by Peter Jackson, I was really eager to check it out. First of all, there is no denying that this movie was and still is a technical marvel. Indeed, when you hear these veterans, it felt as if they had recorded t” read more

Notes: Honestly, a movie about mental diseases and the psychiatric world directed by Alfred Hitchcock sounded great but, unfortunately, the whole thing was rather disappointing and it is not a match to the great flicks made by the master. The main issue is that even though the psychoanalysis elements were really intriguing (as a matter of fact, it was one of the first Hollywood films to deal with this subject), they felt compelled to add a crime story and a romance on top of that. Those plots were really far-fetched and hardly convincing which was disappointing, especially coming from Hitchcock who was responsible for some of the smartest thrillers I have ever seen. It seems that he didn’t take the story really seriously as himself referred to it as "just another manhunt wrapped up in pseudo-psychoanalysis". Still, I liked it because there were definitely some touches of greatness. Indeed, I loved the directing and the mood was created. Furthermore even though their love story was far from being convincing, I thought that Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck both gave some solid performances. Finally, there was this marvelous dream sequence based on Salvador Dali’s designs. Even though this scene was only 2 minutes (it was scheduled to last about 20 minutes originally), it was really impressive and makes worth it to watch the movie.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Samuel L. Jackson, I thought I might as well check it out. If its title did make the whole thing sound like an average direct-to-PPV thriller, well, that’s exactly what it turned out to be after all. I mean, the beginn” read more

Shoot the Piano Player
Notes: To be honest, it is not one of François Truffaut's most prestigious work and it definitely belongs to his more obscure work but I still think it was quite enjoyable. Basically, the tone was more frivolous and the whole thing was actually rather unfocused. Indeed, even though it is supposed to be a thriller/film noir, it is obvious that Truffaut didn’t really care much about the plot and he wanted to rather focus on the colorful characters and there was also some fixation towards women, a trademark in François Truffaut’s work. It was also rather fun to see Charles Aznavour, a very famous singer in France, playing the main character. Anyway, eventually, even though it was rather well received by the critics, it was actually a box-office flop and, following this failure, Truffaut decided to drop the New Wave directing style based mostly on improvisation to some more traditionally structured dramas. Anyway, even if it is not really a masterpiece, it is still a pretty good flick.
