Body Double

Days of Being Wild (1990)
Notes: To be honest, as usual with Wong Kar Wai, I still ended up with some mixed feelings. I mean, there is no doubt that he always delivered his best work when focusing on such doomed love stories and, once again, the cinematography from Christopher Doyle (who was working with Wong Kar Wai for the first time around) was quite mesmerising. On top of that, Leslie Cheung delivered a really strong performance playing one of the most fascinating tortured womaniser I have ever seen. And yet, I was never swept away by the whole thing. I mean, even though Cheung was really good, his character was borderline despicable but even though some of the other characters seemed to be more righteous, I still didn't care much for them either. It was also pretty weird to see Tony Leung showing up completely randomly during the very last scene but his character was apparently supposed to be the lead in a second part which was never produced. Anyway, even if it didn't really blow me away, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

“Since this movie was a big flop when it was released, I had somer rather low expectations but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Juno
Notes: I remembered it very well the first time I saw this movie, after hearing here and there that this movie was really awesome (according to Roger Ebert, it was even the best movie released in 2007), I had some really high expectations. However, to be honest, this movie turned out to be slightly disappointing after all. Sure, I have to admit that I did like the damned thing but I still think it is kind of overrated. Above all, what bothered me the most was that the whole thing was trying too hard to be smart and clever but eventually it didn't really sound natural or convincing. Eventually, Juno did sound like a very intelligent person but if she was so smart, how on earth could she get pregnant like this?!? However, I’m glad I gave this movie a second chance because, even if I was still not completely sold, I was this time around much more able to see its qualities. Indeed, even if Diablo Cody’s dialogues were still too elaborate, there was actually something really genuine about these characters and the whole cast gave some really solid performance, especially Elliot Page. Another thing that I enjoyed was the fact that the movie didn’t really follow a linear structure, even if it was still nothing really groundbreaking.

The Philadelphia Story
Notes: In my opinion, there are two kinds of classics, some of them which remain untouched by time and which will always be great and amazing like ‘Citizen Kane’ , ‘M’, ‘ Rashomon’ or ‘A bout de souffle’ and the other sort which are still very well regarded but which seems rather dated like ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ , ‘The Wizard of Oz’ or ‘Gone with the Wind’ (Of course, it all depends what your taste is. You might find those movies still amazing and much better than the ones I mentioned before). Anyway, in my opinion, this movie belongs to the second category. Sure, it is a decent comedy with 3 amazing actors (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart) and it was quite fun but also terribly fluffy and I really had a hard time to care about the whole thing. I’ll give you that it was much better than all those inane romantic-comedies you get nowadays but I can’t say I was really blown away by this flick though. You could argue that the whole fluffiness is inherent to the genre but I don’t agree, a comedy always has to be funny but I don’t think it has to be shallow, at least, that’s my opinion. Still, it is a classic though.

The Intouchables
Notes: I remember it very well, while I was on holiday in France, this movie was just released there and it was already a huge success. Right away, I dismissed it. Indeed, I thought it was just another successful French comedy based on a very old formula and I was really not interested. But then, it became this massive international success, becoming the highest grossing French movie ever made in the process (surprisingly, it didn’t beat ‘Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis’ which is still the most successful French film in France, a movie which seems even less appealing than this one). Obviously, since this flick was such a success, I started to wonder if I might have been mistaken so I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, I have to admit it, it is actually a pretty good flick but does it really deserve such praises and box-office records? I don’t really think so. I mean, it is a solid feelgood feature with some good performances by Omar Sy and François Cluzet and there were some funny scenes but, seriously, what was actually so amazing about this story? In my opinion, even though it tried to break some stereotypes, it was still rather stereotypical, pedestrian and quite predictable. Anyway, even if it might not be as amazing as everyone seems to think, I have to admit that it is still an enjoyable flick though.

La Dolce Vita
Notes: To be honest, the first time I watched it, even though I did like it, I can't say it really blew me away but maybe I was too young or not smart enough at the time to properly appreciate this masterpiece. Unfortunately, even after rewatching this movie after all these years, I still struggled to connect with the damned thing. I mean, what was it supposed to be really about? Was it to show how tedious and trivial the night life was in Roma back in those days? Furthermore, it all felt seriously random and it didn't help that it didn't care much about the characters involved. Of course, it is still a good movie and it would be foolish of me to dismiss the damned thing just because I didn't really understand it. Indeed, Fellini was definitely a very good director and it is a beautiful movie to look at. Furthermore, Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg were both seriously charismatic, even though it is rather funny that everyone remembers Ekberg in this movie when she was there maybe only 20 minutes. Anyway, maybe I should try again in another 20 years and maybe, this time, I will fall in love with the damned thing but, even so, it is still a major classic.

Short Cuts (1993)
Notes: I remember it pretty well, when it was released, there was a huge buzz and eventually it received some great reviews. So, following this and the fact I loved Robert Altman's previous movie ('The Player'), I was really eager to watch this movie. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed. Still, since I was 14-15 years old when I watched it the first time around, I thought it needed a rewatch. Eventually, I enjoyed it a little bit more but, to be honest, I still didn't think it was anything really mind-blowing though. Basically, it is one of those hyperlink features with various characters and storylines which are more or less intertwined together. Back then, I thought it was a boring mess which was going nowhere. Nowadays, I'm more familiar with the whole hyperlink thing and I could appreciate more what Robert Altman was trying to pull here. Unfortunately, pretty much like 'Nashville', I didn't care much about the characters or what they were going through and, as a result, it was sometimes rather tedious to watch. Still, it was very well directed, there was a massive cast (Andie MacDowell, Jack Lemmon, Julianne Moore, Matthew Modine, Anne Archer, Fred Ward, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chris Penn, Lili Taylor, Robert Downey Jr., Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits, Frances McDormand, Peter Gallagher, Lori Singer, Lyle Lovett) and they all gave some strong performances.
