A good movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this flick but I was in the mood in watching something completely different and since this movie was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Apparently, it was based on a videogame which was itself based on some novel but to be honest, I had ne” read more

Notes: First of all, I have to admit it, even though I have some huge respect for their legacy, I have actually never been a big fan of the Beattles and I never really cared for their music. Still, even so, I thought it was actually a rather enjoyable feature. To be honest, I wasn't really able to follow the whole thing as it was in English without subtitles and the accents were sometimes rather thick but, obviously, this movie was not really about the plot or the dialogues either. At the time, it was a surprising box-office hit and many bands tried later on to release some similar movies like this one but most of them were some massive flops (the worse one being probably ‘Spice World’). Anyway, even if this movie didn’t seem to be something for me, I thought it was actually pretty cool and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are a fan of the most famous band that ever existed.

“Since I didn’t really like ‘Bad Moms’, I didn’t expect much from this sequel but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. To be honest, even if it was maybe not worse than its predecessor, it was certainly not better either. Basically, this time, it t” read more

La Haine
Notes: I actually saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released more than 20 years ago, but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, even though it is a huge classic, in France but also abroad, to be honest, I always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, sure, it is a well made movie with some solid performances and I have to admit that it is really entertaining but, somehow, I always felt that it missed something to become really amazing. In my opinion, it is a fine movie as long as you don't analyse it too much but, if you start to look into the details, it tends to actually fall apart. Eventually, the main issue I had was that it was so damned pretentious. Indeed, back in those days, Quentin Tarantino had released 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Pulp Fiction' which were amazing and superior to this movie because, among other things, they didn't pretend to be providing some supposedly deep comment about our society. Especially if you are French and familiar to what they were displaying, this movie felt rather condescending. Anyway, even if I have never been completely sold by this movie, it is still a classic.

Airplane!
Notes: In my opinion, one of the interesting things about this movie is that it is a great test to know if you actually enjoy the parody genre. Indeed, even if it might not be the first one, it was and is the best one ever made. So, if you watch this flick and you think it stinks, you can skip directly everything in this genre because nothing else that came after was remotely better than this. For me, this test worked pretty well and I know where I stand now. Indeed, I thought it was pretty good and there were so many good jokes ('a smoking ticket, please!', just awesome...) but that was it, I'm afraid. Indeed, in my opinion, even though it is supposed to be that way, it was still all pretty stupid and stupid humor is not really my thing, I'm afraid. After this, the directing trio (Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker) spent much of their career milking dry this genre and I didn't care much for it. Indeed, 'The Naked Gun' trilogy was actually pretty lame, in my opinion... Anyway, even though I'm not a huge fan of this movie, it is definitely a classic.

Badlands
Notes: I had actually already seen this flick and, if I recall it correctly, the first time I saw it was about 20 years ago when I was living in England. Back then, I wasn’t really familiar with Terrence Malick and I watched this flick because it was considered as a masterpiece. Nowadays, I have all the movies directed by Malick and I thought it was time to revisit his directing debut. Unfortunately, even this second time around, I wasn’t exactly blown away by the whole thing. The main issue I had back then and still have is that the characters are rather aimless, emotionless and filled with a guastly void. As a result, I had a hard time to connect with them and their boredom was actually highly contagious. Still, like all the work done by Terrence Malick, there is something quite fascinating about this flick. Indeed, I love the way he always challenges the typical narrative conventions and the photography was just superb with some amazing shots. Furthermore, even though I had a hard time to care about the characters, I don’t think Martin Sheen or Sissy Spacek should be blamed since they both gave some very good performances.
