An average movie

“I wasn’t exactly dying to see yet another adaptation of this classic Shakespeare play but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually seriously bored by the damned thing and, even if it might not be the worst adaptation, it was” read more

Grease
Notes: I saw this movie twice already (as a matter of fact, both times I saw this movie was with my wife) and she had seen it countless of times and it is definitely a childhood classic for her. Well, eventually, as I expected, I was seriously bored by the whole thing. I mean, in fact, I was even planning to give it an even lower rating but since there were a couple of good tunes and since the dancing was pretty neat, I gave it a few extra points but it doesn't change the fact that I didn't like it much. Basically, the main issue I have with the damned thing is that not only it is terribly sweet and cheesy but it is in fact really about nothing at all. Indeed, I believe that if you love movies because they tell you a great story or show you some compelling characters or talk about some interesting subjects, then I have some serious doubts that you will like this movie. Seriously, it is not very often that I came across such a successful movie which turned out to be in fact so empty. Anyway, I think I'm being actually generous with my rating here but I guess it is still worth a look.

A good movie

“Since I really enjoyed ‘Wild Wild Country’, I was quite eager to check this follow-up focusing on Ma Anand Sheela. Well, many will probably complain that nothing much really happened and that you eventually learn nothing new about what happened back then in the 80’s in the Rajneeshpuram commun” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick and since it was suggested by a fellow Listal member, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, you can’t deny that this movie was quite prescient as it was released more than a year before George Floyd was killed by a white poli” read more

Wall Street
Notes: Basically, it is another major classic directed by Oliver Stone but, to be honest, the first time I watched it, I thought it was actually slightly disappointing. I mean, it remains a very good movie, no doubt about it, but I thought that Charlie Sheen’s character was terribly bland and not very well developed. Furthermore, the whole thing about the young stockbroker being attracted by greed but who ultimately rejects it was rather boring and pedestrian. Still, there was some great stuff here, absolutely. First of all, Michael Douglas was just terrific as Gordon Gekko and only to see him makes it worth watching the whole damned thing and, in my opinion, he should have been the main character. Basically, that was the main problem with this movie. Indeed, even though the movie was against Gekko, yelling that he is the bad guy and that you should despise him, deep down, everyone thought he was awesome and this character became an icon, a role model for many guys who wanted to succeed in the stock-exchange world. Eventually, in spite of its flaws, this movie is still an invaluable time-capsule showing Wall Street back in the 80’s.

Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Notes: In spite of or because of its controversial reputation, I was quite eager to check this movie. On top of that, it had been years since I saw a movie directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Well, eventually, it definitely deserves its reputation as it was easily one of the most f*cked-up movies I have ever seen and I have seen quite a lot of weird and messed-up flicks. In fact, the sex scenes were not so unbearable but it was the first time I saw a movie dealing with scatology and these scenes were just awful to behold. Later on, it didn't get much better with some horrible torture scenes. Seriously, compared to this movie, such movies like 'Saw' or 'Hostel' were pretty much like a walk in a park. Eventually, what was Pasolini's point? In my opinion, he wanted to show that Fascism was and still is the most decadent, depraved and insane political ideology that ever existed. Still, even though I have a weak spot for nightmarish movies, Pasolini went really far here and I think I will remain nauseous for a couple of days after watching the damned thing.
