Notes: Honestly, a movie about mental diseases and the psychiatric world directed by Alfred Hitchcock sounded great but, unfortunately, the whole thing was rather disappointing and it is not a match to the great flicks made by the master. The main issue is that even though the psychoanalysis elements were really intriguing (as a matter of fact, it was one of the first Hollywood films to deal with this subject), they felt compelled to add a crime story and a romance on top of that. Those plots were really far-fetched and hardly convincing which was disappointing, especially coming from Hitchcock who was responsible for some of the smartest thrillers I have ever seen. It seems that he didnât take the story really seriously as himself referred to it as "just another manhunt wrapped up in pseudo-psychoanalysis". Still, I liked it because there were definitely some touches of greatness. Indeed, I loved the directing and the mood was created. Furthermore even though their love story was far from being convincing, I thought that Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck both gave some solid performances. Finally, there was this marvelous dream sequence based on Salvador Daliâs designs. Even though this scene was only 2 minutes (it was scheduled to last about 20 minutes originally), it was really impressive and makes worth it to watch the movie. 3 years, 10 months ago

“I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Samuel L. Jackson, I thought I might as well check it out. If its title did make the whole thing sound like an average direct-to-PPV thriller, well, thatâs exactly what it turned out to be after all. I mean, the beginn” read more

Notes: To be honest, it is not one of François Truffaut's most prestigious work and it definitely belongs to his more obscure work but I still think it was quite enjoyable. Basically, the tone was more frivolous and the whole thing was actually rather unfocused. Indeed, even though it is supposed to be a thriller/film noir, it is obvious that Truffaut didnât really care much about the plot and he wanted to rather focus on the colorful characters and there was also some fixation towards women, a trademark in François Truffautâs work. It was also rather fun to see Charles Aznavour, a very famous singer in France, playing the main character. Anyway, eventually, even though it was rather well received by the critics, it was actually a box-office flop and, following this failure, Truffaut decided to drop the New Wave directing style based mostly on improvisation to some more traditionally structured dramas. Anyway, even if it is not really a masterpiece, it is still a pretty good flick.3 years, 10 months ago

Notes: It is not one of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous features but one of those many spy movies he made in England before moving to Hollywood. It was also an adaptation of a book written by Joseph Conrad. To be honest, I havenât read the book but I have seen another version which was made exactly 60 years later by Christopher Hampton with an all-star cast. Anyway, even though Hitchcock didnât have such a cast, the modern technology and probably had a smaller budget, his version was still better. Indeed, the story and the characters were actually not really interesting but his directing was, as usual, really efficient, creating a really tense mood. Furthermore, even though Hitchcock said that he regretted including Stevie's death, I didnât see it coming and I thought it was quite powerful. I thought also that Sylvia Sidney, who I didnât know before, was really charming (Hitchcock really knew how to pick his actresses, thatâs for sure) and if Marion Cotillard had made movies in 30âs, she would probably have looked like this lovely lady. Anyway, even if it is actually nothing really amazing, it is still a solid vintage spy feature. 3 years, 10 months ago

Notes: At last⌠After waiting for maybe 18 long months, we were finally able to watch a new MCU film. In fact, I have to admit that I expected the damned thing to be some origin story about Black Widow (which it still was, somehow) but it actually turned out to be some kind of side mission the character handled around the time of âCaptain America: Civil Warâ. Well, to be honest, this mission was not really fascinating and, eventually, the whole thing felt like some box they checked so they could argue that this most beloved character did have a solo feature. I mean, itâs probably the least impactful movie in the grand scheme always involved in the seriously intricate MCU and this great character probably did deserve better. Still, once again, Scarlett Johansson was pretty awesome, she did kick some serious ass and itâs a pity we probably wonât see her again playing this character. However, I shouldnât forget to mention that Florence Pugh who also nailed another pitch-perfect performance here. Seriously, this girl showed up around 5 years ago and she is by far already one of the most interesting actresses at work nowadays. Eventually, all the scenes involving the two lethal assassins were just seriously entertaining. The scenes involving the reunion of Black Widow with her âfakeâ family were also pretty neat but itâs a pity that pretty much everything else was so generic though. Eventually, I still think that the whole side-mission thing was a poor choice and, eventually, it was pretty obvious that they followed this path just to make sure that, even if we might have lost the original Black Widow, well, now we can move on with her badass little sister as a possible replacement. The problem with this approach was that basically nothing else really mattered. 3 years, 10 months ago
