Notes: To be honest, even though I really liked this movie, it turned out to be a hard, even relentless watch and I have to admit that I did struggle to get a good grip on the damned thing. Basically, nothing was clearly stated in this movie such as who were the characters, what was their background, how did they end up in such positions,... In fact, it was only half way through the damned thing that I finally figured out that it was taking place in Lebanon. Of course, the mixed up chronology didn’t help either. On the other hand, it was probably all by design as the movie title was, after all, synonym with ‘chaos’. And, yet, there’s no denying that this movie had some haunting qualities and I keep thinking about it since I saw it. I think the scenes with the two kids alone had the most impact on me and their performances were just amazing (I’m still not sure how they managed to go this far with such a young baby though). Even though it was something that wasn’t directly touched by this movie, it still provided a good explanation why 1000’s of people every day are risking their lives to illegally immigrate to Europe when actually nobody wants them there. Even if you are more or less aware of it, this movie still provided such a ghastly look on the despair experienced by this people in Lebanon. Eventually, the huge contrast with our luxurious comfortable lifestyle seems so surreal, it feels as if we are now living in two completely different and separate worlds.

An average movie

“I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jennifer Garner and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be one of these movies arguing that raising kids has become such an impossible task nowadays and, to be hon” read more

Notes: First of all, you can say whatever you want but it is definitely a really bad-ass title. The first time I watched the damned thing, to be honest, I was actually rather apprehensive as I thought it would be really terrifying. Eventually, I thought it was not really scary, sure, it was unsettling but never really scary. To make up my mind for good, I even saw it again later on but I still had the same feeling. Another thing that always bothered me was the ending which is seriously a total mess. Eventually, I think it is a little bit outdated now and not really frightening anymore but you still have to keep in my mind that it was made almost 50 years old and it has been hugely influential on all the slashers that came afterwards. On top of that, they still managed to create a great mood and I still enjoyed the damned thing. Anyway, it is a solid horror movie and it is an absolute milestone for this genre.

News of the World
Notes: To be honest, I took me a while to get into this movie and I guess it mostly had to with the fact that the plot was actually really generic and predictable. And, yet, it still managed to grab me at some point. Indeed, even if it wasn’t the darkest Western I have seen, the tone was still quite sad and I think that’s why the two main characters eventually bonded, not necessarily because they were kind to one and another but because they shared a deep sorrow. What made this even more interesting was that their pain and sorrow actually echoed the pain and sorrow experienced by the whole nation at the time including the Indians, the settlers, the black slaves, the Civil war veterans and the South in general. In my opinion, these two characters were fairly well developed and even though it was obvious the kid needed the captain to move forward, he also needed her to be able to face his past. Eventually, the whole thing did end on a hopeful note but I think it also echoed how, in spite of a very rough start, the USA as a nation still became a world leader, whether you like it or not.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Notes: Even though I did like this movie, I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing to be honest. Even though this movie might seem to be, at first, about the rebooting of her murder investigation, it had in fact little do with this investigation at all after all. Basically, it was mostly dealing with 2 characters and how they have to face guilt, judgement and then redemption. However, if this process worked fine with the main character thanks to a really strong performance delivered by Frances McDormand, I wasn’t completely convinced with what happened to Jason Dixon though. Indeed, from the moment that he reads the letter that Willoughby left him, they completely flipped his character around. I mean, so far, Dixon was a fairly pathetic incompetent and easy to hate cop and it was actually quite funny to hear Willoughby saying that he was or could be a good cop since we saw completely the opposite so far. However, from this point on, this character changed drastically, even showing some decent detective skills but this change was rather hard to swallow. Of course, I don’t blame Sam Rockwell, the guy gave another strong performance, it’s just that this story seemed to have just too much impact on his character. Still, it was a rather complex tale with some interesting characters and I should probably re-watch it at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing.

The Killer
Notes: I remember it very well, back in the 90's, John Woo was really hot, he was pretty much considered as an icon by many directors such as Quentin Tarantino and since ‘The Killer’ was considered to be his magnum opus, I watched it with the highest expectations. Well, to be honest, I thought the damned thing was actually pretty bad. The fact that it was my first contact with John Woo’s work probably didn’t help. Basically, there were a lot of shootings, lot of slow motion... Eventually, the very top was one of the last scenes. If I recall it correctly, there was this woman who was blind from the start and one of these 2 main male characters who also became blind during one those countless shootings. So, you get to see this blind man and this blind woman actually crawling to each other very slowly, in a typical John Woo slow motion style. Seriously, the scene just looked ridiculous and the worse was that at the end.... They actually missed each other !!! Indeed, they were actually crawling next to each other!! Sure, it was probably supposed to be very touching and very symbolic but, honestly, it just stroke me how pathetic it looked.

The Dark Crystal
Notes: Eventually, I really did like this movie a lot but, somehow, it didn’t really blew me away though. First of all, on a technical level, it was indeed a really impressive feature. Indeed, those puppets and the sets just looked great and I really enjoyed the creatures, the characters and, basically, the whole fantasy world they managed to create which was just fascinating. Frankly, I had never seen something like this before, a Fantasy Adventure only with some puppets, and the makers should be credited for trying to create something so original. On the downside, since you are dealing only with some puppets here, the whole thing tended to be really static and the action scenes were not really successful. Basically, half of the movie, you have the puppets talking to each other without doing much else which is quite understandable since you can’t constantly move them but then, in this case, you wonder if this medium was just not too much limited to tell a story on this scale. Still, in spite of these flaws, if only to see this amazing world, it is definitely worth a look.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should check it out again at some point. In fact, I remember it quite well the first time I watched it. Indeed, I kept hearing some really good things about this flick so I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations about the damned thing. Well, eventually, even though I though it was indeed pretty good, I can’t say I was really blown away and, to be honest, I thought it was actually slightly underwhelming. Basically, while watching this, sure, I thought it was well made and fairly entertaining but I couldn’t help thinking that it was rather outdated. I mean, sure, when it was first released 40 years ago, it must have been terribly shocking for the mainstream audience but, after all these years, we have been used to see some much more violence, both physical and psychological, so the whole thing didn’t have much impact on me.
