Notes: Even though Eddie Murphy does have a rather lousy reputation, when he did get some solid material, the guy was just hilarious and this movie was a fine example. Dan Aykroyd was pretty good as well. Furthermore, I really enjoyed how they handled the stock-exchange making it all look like ruthless, worthless and also quite ridiculous. Still, even though I definitely enjoyed it, it was still not really mindblowing in my opinion. I mean, of course it was quite funny but, eventually, it still remained rather harmless and innocent. For example, when Dan Aykroyd ends up on the street, within the very first minutes, somehow, he managed to be helped by some good-hearted hooker. I mean, come on, was it really realistic? Not really. Maybe they should have pushed it even further in the cynical dark humor. Furthermore, the whole 3rd act when they finally get together to get even with the Dukes was rather disappointing. In my opinion, it was a rather sappy and uninteresting happy ending. Anyway, it is honestly nothing really great but it is still a funny and entertaining comedy.

The Quiet Man (1952)
Notes: First of all, I had to admit it, I'm not really familiar with John Wayne's work and, in my opinion, he basically always portrayed typical tough guys so I was rather surprised to see him being cast in a such a romantic feature. And the best thing is that it actually worked. Basically, it is a rather simple and very old-fashioned romantic feature. Still, the fact that it was so old-fashioned made it, at the same time, very cute and charming but also sometimes rather annoying to watch. Still, I thought it was quite enjoyable to watch and the whole thing had an extra personal dimension (indeed, my own father moved from the Netherlands to live in France and I myself moved from France to live in the Netherlands). Eventually, it remains a harmless romantic flick and I thought it was pretty good, even if it was nothing really mind-blowing.

Winter Sleep (2014)
Notes: With a running time of more than 3 hours, it was definitely a challenging watch and the fact that basically nothing much happened through the whole thing didn’t help either. At least, Nuri Bilge Ceylan did deliver a beautiful movie to look at but since the characters didn’t go really anywhere, it did become rather monotonous fairly quickly. So, what did the guy try to achieve with this rather overlong flick? In my opinion, it was some kind of character study dealing with emptiness and boredom. Indeed, at first, the main character seemed to be a soft-spoken educated and sophisticated man. However, it became obvious pretty quickly that the guy was terribly self-absorbed and had no connection with his community but not much more with his sister and his wife. I mean, most of the dialogues involved some seemingly intellectual conversations but, at the end of the day, it was only some platitudes and I’m not surprised that the director had been inspired by Russian literature. Of course, you could blame the main character but, in my opinion, his sister and his wife were not really much better. Indeed, they were both complaining about how boring and empty their life had become, mostly blaiming the main character for it, but it was rather dubious that their lives had been so difficult and, above all, they were not willing to do anything to really improve their situation. Concerning the main character, he spent most of his time trying to convince everyone around him of how important he was when, in fact, the only thing he pretty much did was aimlessly wandering around. Still, 3 hours was quite a long time to spend with some characters who were neither really likeable and/or interesting after all.

A good movie

“To be honest, after watching ‘Das Experiment’ and the US remake ‘The Experiment’, I wasn’t exactly dying to see a 3rd movie about this story but, somehow, I still ended up watching this movie. Well, I have to admit that it is still such a fascinating tale and the fact that they took a diff” read more

RoboCop
Notes: When I was a kid, I watched this flick and I just loved it. For Paul Verhoeven, the great Dutch master, it was his ticket to Hollywood and it was a downright success. You see on a regular basis promising European directors hired by Hollywood but most of those features are just disappointing. Not this one though. Indeed, even though it is a studio feature, Verhoeven managed to keep his twisted violent vision and gave us a relentless action flick. Nowadays, the violence in action movies is terribly toned down so when you watch a good old action flick from the 80's, you have to adjust a little bit because the blood is coming out in liters, the heads are exploding and the limbs are flying in the air, all in close-up. Furthermore, there is a lot of pitch black humor and the combination with the violence was pretty unique, awesome and really true to Verhoeven's style. I have to admit that even though Robocop looked pretty cool, when he walks, he did look pretty cheesy and the special effects in general were pretty cheesy as well. Still, it is a very well made SF flick though.

Luxemburg, USA
Note: Alright, pretty much like Italy, this entry is a little bit ‘undeserved’ but I thought it was still fun to add this country. Basically, the last time I went to France on holiday (like pretty much every year), my sister had rented a villa all the way down south. Anyway, when it was time to go back home in the Netherlands, not only we had to cross France almost all the way from the bottom to the top but, for some reason, the GPS made us also cross Luxembourg. So, for about 45 mins, we were then driving in this country which I had never seen before. The funny thing with this country, something I have actually never seen in any other country before, was that there was not even a board saying something like ‘Welcome to Luxembourg’ (or maybe I just missed the damned thing but I doubt it). Anyway, except for the highway, I didn’t see anything else of this country.

The Endless Summer
Notes: What made this movie worked so well was the fact that it was a movie about surfing, made by surfers, for the surfers. Well, the first striking thing was the fact it was shot without any recorded sound. Indeed, instead, they had some rather annoying soundtrack and some non-stop comments from Bruce Brown, the director of this movie. Even though this narration might seem silly sometimes, or even discriminating when they get to Africa, when the guy talks about the technicality of surfing, especially for someone like me who has never been on a surfer board, it was actually quite fascinating. I have to admit that I was expecting them to go to many more exotic locations like South America or Asia but, after all, they spent most of their time only in Africa and Australia. I was also rather bewildered by the fact that, in Hawaï, there were some pretty great waves and the weather was constantly fine through the whole year so what’s the point of going anywhere else? On the other hand, you could argue that the point was in fact to discover some unknown surfing spots, some places where nobody had surfed before, and to discover the world in the process which was something rather uncommon back in the 60’s. Indeed, another impressive thing about this movie was how old it actually is. While watching these guys doing some amazing tricks on their surf, you might think it was shot 20 or 30 years ago but, in fact, it was made a whopping 60 years ago.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, the damned thing was just so damned long, I think it was the longest movie ever made by Adam Sandler. Seriously, if there is no valid reason why some ” read more

Shane
Notes: Basically, even though the damned thing has a really solid reputation, I thought it was a rather standard Western story. Indeed, it was a generic tale about some simple farmers who are bullied by some evil cattle baron and, of course, a mysterious stranger passes by and saves the day. Seriously, it wasn’t original at all and it was completely predictable but I guess I shouldn't forget that this Western was made 60 years ago and it was made before many other Westerns would use afterwards the same template. Still, the directing and acting were solid and I did like the attention they gave to the details. It was also interesting to notice that there was barely any shooting during the whole thing, there was one big fight though. In fact, the main character was without a gun during the whole thing and it was a nice approach. Indeed, instead of making the shootings look cool like most other Westerns, they displayed here that, even though such shootings were sometimes inevitable, the consequences were usually dreadfull.

Notes: First of all, the damned thing was just so damned long, I think it was the longest movie ever made by Adam Sandler. Seriously, if there is no valid reason why some brainless action flicks like ‘Transformers’ or ‘Fast and Furious 23’ should last more than 2 hours, well, this rule should definitely apply also for all the moronic comedies starring Sandler. Still, I have to admit that it turned out to be slightly better than ‘The Do-Over’ but it wasn’t such a difficult goal to achieve. Indeed, the concept was not bad and it was not completely random. Still, even though they tried to sell the idea that the main character was a hilarious new creation, in fact, Sandler played his usual moronic cringe-inducing guy, basically, a talentless hack who was never funny whatsoever. However, only half of the movie was about his ‘exploits’ as a manager and the other half was about some really unlikely love story with one of his talents. Unfortunately, this romance was never convincing whatsoever and, eventually, the movie was never really about this manager believing in the talents of his protĂ©gĂ© but, actually, it was the other way around which was just rather weird. Anyway, it was rather sad to see a lovely girl played by the gorgeous and talented Jennifer Hudson falling in love with this obnoxious man for really no reason whatsoever but, apparently, it is another rule that, in every Sandler movie, he has to get the nicest girls around even if his characters are borderline awful.
