An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a really nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with such a generic title, I should have already lowered my expectations but, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how weak it turned out to be. S” read more

The Night of the Hunter
Notes: Well, I have to admit it, it is a really odd feature, the only directing effort by Charles Laughton, Robert Mitchum’s favorite movies of his one, and, unsurprisingly, it was a critical and financial flop when it was released. Honestly, could you expect such a weird dark tale to reach an audience back in the 50’s? Even myself, 60 years later, I find it difficult to grasp the whole thing. Roger Ebert had some interesting theories about this movie, that it was some kind of nightmare which was something I didn’t think of while watching it and he also described it as an horror feature but I didn’t really agree on this. Like I said before, the whole thing is rather odd and, sometimes, it jumps from one scene to another without much continuity but there is no denying that it was quite spellbinding to behold. Above all, it is not often that you will come across such a despicable messed up and yet somewhat charismatic main character with a pitch perfect Robert Mitchum.

An average movie

“Since this movie had been really poorly received, I wasn’t expecting much, but the idea of a movie mixing ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Split’ sounded really intrigued so I still wanted to check it out. Furthermore, I wondered how Shyamalan had managed to ruin so quickly his fresh new comeback. Well,” read more

Star Wars: A New Hope
Notes: Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to watch the original trilogy when it was first released. In fact, I wasn't even born yet when the first movie came out but, of course, like most of the kids growing up in the 80's, I watched them countless times with my dad when it was broadcasted on TV. To be honest, after all these years, I still think the whole thing is much more enjoyable if you watch it with the eyes of a 12 year old kid. Indeed, at that age, you don't notice all the small minor details, like the rather average acting, the cheesy dialogues, and above all the fact that Lucas didn't really invent anything actually. But, I have to admit it, when your are a kid, it is basically the most brilliant thing you have ever seen. The larger than life characters, the sweeping adventures and above all the amazing immersive world which completely suck you in are things you will probably never forget. Anyway, even though I’m probably not really a die-hard fan, I have to admit that it is still a timeless childhood classic.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
Notes: Eventually, I think it turned out to be Quentin Tarantino's most challenging movie so far which was not necessarily a bad thing, in the contrary, but I wish this challenge would have been more rewarding. I mean, I really liked it but it just never left like a real home-run to me. Still, on the technical side, it was just a marvel to watch. Indeed, Tarantino went very far in the mood and the details to create a believable version of Hollywood at the time. On top of that, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were both pretty good and I was above all impressed by DiCaprio who gave here actually one of his best performances. However, what the main point was probably the nostalgia that Tarantino has for this time and place but, if you don't share this feeling, well, there are so many references that you will either miss or even won't care at all. On top of that, even if it is something you probably should expect from this director, the whole thing was pretty random. Indeed, in 'Pulp Fiction', you had also such seemingly random mess but every single scene did end up being crucial, which wasn't really the case here. Still, I have to admit that I never saw coming the twist at the end as Tarantino used the same trick he did with 'Inglourious Basterds', rewriting history in the process, but it was actually pretty neat and it worked better this time around. Anyway, if it didn't completely win me over, it was still a really bold project, much more interesting than all these remakes, reboots and sequels that you get to see nowadays at the movie theater.

A very good movie

“Even though Pixar’s recent track-record has been rather patchy, this movie did sound really intriguing and it was really neat that it was released for free on Disney+ on Christmas. Soul (2020)
Notes: Well, the guys from Pixar have done it again. Indeed, they have produced yet another masterpiece. Of course, the animation was gorgeous, I wouldn’t expect less from them, and the jazz music was really sweet as well, but, above all, the depth of the story and the themes developed was just really impressive. You might argue that it might be too similar to ‘Inside Out’, Pete Docter’s previous directing effort, but I didn’t bother me. Basically, this movie was some kind of a mix of ‘Inside Out’ with ‘Coco’ and ‘Up’ with some body-switching as well. Regarding the body-switching thing, you can imagine that they could have made the whole movie about this (how many movies have been made around this concept?) and it would have been still fairly successful anyway. However, and that’s where the movie really stands out from the competition, they went just way beyond that. Basically, they tackled the biggest question ever which is ‘What is the meaning of life?’, even if both characters were not even aware of this quest and this journey was just quite spellbinding. I also really appreciate the fact that, even though the main character seemed to be a decent guy, he was also flawed which made him so much more human and identifiable. Basically, the damned thing was just fascinating to behold.
