Dogtown And Z-Boys
Notes: I always had a weak spot for ā€˜Lords of Dogtownā€™ but I have noticed that it didnā€™t get much love and the biggest argument was that the original documentary ā€˜Dogtown and Z-Boysā€™ was much better so I was really eager to check this flick. Well, I wasnā€™t disappointed, thatā€™s for sure. Indeed, I thought it was a fascinating and thrilling feature showing the genuine birth of a phenomenon which is still going strong nowadays. There was also some awesome photos and footage and this flick is a must see for anyone more or less interested in skateboarding. The only issue I might have is that the whole thing was directed by Stacy Peralta, himself one of the original Z-Boys, and while on one hand, it was a pretty cool fact and the guy definitely knew what he was talking about, on the other hand, you wonder if an outsider wouldnā€™t have been more objective about the whole thing. Eventually, even after watching this flick, I still think ā€˜Lords of Dogtownā€™ is a decent fictionalized version and I think I will re-watch it at some point.

Secrets & Lies (1996)
Note : I remember it very well, when it was released, it was a critical success and even won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film festival. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectaions but, to be honest, even though I did like it, I canā€™t say I was really blown away by the whole thing back then. Maybe I was too young at the time (I must have been 16-17 years old when I watched it) and I probably missed the subtlety which has always been a trademark in Mike Leighā€™s work. Anyway, Iā€™m really glad I gave it a second chance after all these years because, this time around, I really loved the damned thing. Indeed, basically, it is actually a really complex movie about some really average people and I think thatā€™s probably what slightly bothered me the first time, the fact that there was nothing really exceptional about the characters involved. However, if you look more closely, you can see that their emotions go so deep, it is pretty much like diving into the human soul while none of the characters really tell what they think or what they feel, except maybe Maurice towards the end. I also thought that the damned thing was brilliantly written (when in fact most of it was actually improvised). For example, you can imagine that, in a Hollywood production, Hortense would have discovered that she had been adopted when she was going through her motherā€™s things but, no, she already knew since she was a little girl. And of course, the whole cast was pretty much pitch-perfect.

An average movie

“To be honest, Iā€™m not a huge fan of this franchise but since all the instalments were made available by my TV provider, I thought I might as well check them out. Well, at least, I have to admit that it wasnā€™t much worse than the previous instalment but it wasnā€™t much better either. Once again,” read more

Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is probably the most famous movie directed by Werner Herzog and since I kept hearing some great things about the damned thing, I was really eager to check it out. Well, it completely deserved its reputation and, even though it might be slow for some impatient viewers, I thought it was just quite spellbinding to behold. For this movie, for the very first time, Herzorg was working with Klaus Kinski who gave probably his most famous performance as Don Lope de Aguirre. Apparently, those 2 guys seemed to think that, to make a movie about an insane man, well, you pretty much have to become actually insane yourself. Of course, you might wonder if it was really a good idea to go so far just to make a movie but you can't argue that the end-result was quite amazing. In the future, I should definitely watch ā€˜Fitzcarraldoā€™ which was apparently another fascinating and insane jungle adventure involving once again Herzorg and Kinski. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, the whole thing was quite mesmerizing to behold.

WandaVision
What is it about? Blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision -two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives-begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. My verdict: Well, the first MCU TV-show on Disney+ was maybe not flawless but it was still pretty much a home-run though. Indeed, it is easily one of the most original thing these guys have delivered so far and it is obviously a must-see for any decent MCU fan. I mean, 'The Mandalorian' is a decent watch but it really had the advantage that it was the first and basically the only thing Disney+ had to offer for a very long time. This show didn't play this card at all and it still managed to score some major points. Now, I can't wait to see 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier'.

When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Notes: Honestly, it has been a while since I have this great romantic feature but I will definitely check it out again whenever I get the opportunity. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie is the ultimate romantic-comedy. Indeed, even though I always had a weak spot for the genre, to be honest, most of the rom-coms are actually so underwhelming. The main reason, in my opinion, is that they are usually poorly written and usually focusing on some terrible gimmicks. The great romantic-comedies, in fact, never put the accent on the gimmicks but on the characters and their relationship. This flick does it so well, not only it gives us some really 3 dimensional characters but, above all their relationship was just really sweet, sad, recognizable and pretty often quite hilarious. Following this flick, Meg Ryan pretty much became the queen of the genre with some various amount of success and it's just too bad she pretty much butchered her pretty face with some ill-advised plastic surgery recently. Anyway, there is no denying that she and Billy Crystal had some great chemistry in this flick.

Inside Job
Notes: To be honest, I have never really paid attention to the worldwide crisis back then (thankfully, I always managed to keep my jobs) so I never really dug into it but since this movie had some pretty good ratings, I was definitely eager to see what was actually going on. And boy, that was such a depressing movie... I mean, they threw in from time to time an upbeat tune but there was no way they could remove the general sour taste giving by this take. To be honest, I'm totally a left-wing guy, it came with my upbringing, and this movie displayed how nasty and unhealthy capitalism can be in general. From an ideological point of view, I still believe that left-wing ideas such as socialism, government control and regulation, social welfare would be a better option but it is unfortunately not in our human nature, I'm afraid. Like they said in this movie, if most of the people get the opportunity to get a massive amount of money with a minimum risk for themselves, they will almost always go for it. I have to admit it, the whole thing was quite reminiscent of Michael Moore's style in the sense that many people get ridiculed during the interviews, the editing was massive and there was a fair amount of manipulation. Still, the message remains strong and, like I said before, terribly depressing, but it is and remains a really impressive documentary.
