Notes: Well, I was seriously impressed by this movie, that's for sure. First of all, I have always been interested in documentaries so it was just really neat to see this movie which is usually considered as the very first movie in this genre. Indeed, Robert Flaherty, probably not consciously, set many of the ground rules of the genre and most of the documentaries made nowadays still use these rules. Obviously, many criticised this movie because many (maybe all) of the scenes were actually staged but this criticism is rather ridiculous in my opinion. Indeed, can you imagine shooting with such 100 years old cameras in such terrible conditions without setting up first the scenes? Even nowadays, they still make up some stuff. Anyway, the bottom line is, was it faithful or not? You bet it was. Indeed, with this movie, you get a fascinating look on the life of Eskimos and even though this movie is nowadays almost 100 years old, it never felt condescending. Anyway, this movie was a huge milestone in motion picture history.

“Even though this movie had been a major critical and commercial flop, for some reasons, I still wanted to check it out though. First of all, I have to admit I haven’t read any of the books in The Dark Tower series and, to be honest, I have actually never really been a huge fan of Stephen King’s ” read more

Notes: First of all, to be honest, I was actually rather disappointed that they shot this movie in English instead of Mandarin of Manchurian which was probably the language spoken by the Emperor. Then, even though it was almost 3 hours long, it still must be the most accessible movie directed by Bertolucci. Basically, it was pretty much a rather straightforward biopic but it doesn't mean that I didn't seriously enjoy it though. Indeed, even though storywise, it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was visually really impressive and, by far, the most ambitious feature in this area delivered by the Italian master. Concerning the story, not only it was an entertaining tale about the life of the last Emperor of China, it also provided a fascinating view on 60 years of Chinese history. Of course, you might argue that some of the facts had been dramatised to make the whole thing more suitable for the silver screen but you can assume that most of it was actually fairly accurate. Above all, I thought it was quite interesting to learn that the Emperor, right from the beginning of his reign, didn't have any power whatsoever making his life even more peculiar to follow.

“When I first heard about this project, I have to admit I wasn’t really excited. On the other hand, I have always been a big fan of David Fincher so I was still eager to check it out, especially since it had been 6 long years since he had delivered his last directing effort. Notes: Well, unfortunately, even though I really admired the work done, to be honest, I can’t say I was really blown by the end-result though. I mean, as usual with David Fincher, it was visually really impressive and I loved the way he tried to reproduce the vibe of a movie from the same time period. Furthermore, Herman Mankiewicz was an interesting character and Gary Oldman gave another really strong performance. However, the first issue was already the fact that, beside Mankiewicz, none of the other characters were developed whatsoever. However, the biggest problem was that, even though this movie was obviously a passion project for Fincher (it was even written by his father years ago), it was interesting at best but never really fascinating, I’m afraid. In a sense, you could compare it to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ which was basically Tarantino’s love songs to the end-60’s Hollywood, in this case, Fincher brought us back to the 1930's Hollywood with his meticulous attention to the details but, just like with Tarantino’s acclaimed opus, I just didn’t care much like they both did. Furthermore, concerning the conception of ‘Citizen Kane’, it didn’t go really deep after all. I mean, basically, Mankiewicz locked himself up in some lodge in the middle of nowhere and delivered one of the best screenplays ever written, that’s it. Anyway, even if I didn’t care much the material, it was still another fine directing effort by David Fincher.

johanlefourbe added 1 item to 1001 Movies ... my own version (2010's) list
Notes: Even though it is a rather tricky movie and even though I took me a while to get into the damned thing, I was eventually really impressed. First of all, even though I did laugh a few times, it was definitely not a comedy but it was neither really a drama. Eventually, it was something really different and quite spellbinding to behold. One thing I was wondering was when did Winfried Conradi started to show this erratic behaviour. Was he always like this or is it something that came later on in his life? Indeed, it was something that was never addressed by this family which might give the feeling that he did this for quite a while but, on the other hand, their bewilderment was an indication they really didn’t know what the hell was going on. Anyway, another thing I loved about this movie is that it didn’t provide some supposedly profound life lessons which was just so refreshing. Indeed, even if Winfried was obviously trying to get closer to his daughter, his method was actually rather toxic and you might wonder if what he did actually change anything after all. And, yet, I was still admiring this man who was at least trying to do something, even if it was something seriously weird. I have to admit that I also liked how they displayed that someone making a lot of money with a supposedly high-social status might still have a rather lame job after all. Eventually, Winfried probably did his best to raise his daughter, he managed to give her a high education resulting in a successful career and, yet, they have become seriously estranged in this process and it was so recognizable and rather heartbreaking.
