Notes: Eventually, this movie turned out to be even better than expected and it is indeed a really unique and amazing animated feature. To be honest, I never had the opportunity to read the comic-book which sounds amazing as well but, apparently, it might be easier to appreciate this movie more if you haven’t read the book since they are so similar. Anyway, the story was just really interesting and sometimes actually quite heartbreaking. In spite all of this, they still managed to put some funny moments which was rather incredible, considering the rather dark topic. Eventually, it is also an incredibly valuable movie showing the life of Iran at the time. Basically, it was in fact a country which was fairly modern and progressive but fell into religious obscurantism after the general uprising against the Shah of Iran. The other interesting thing is that, when the main character got to Europe, she did enjoy the freedom there but she had actually a hard time to connect with the locals as they didn’t turn out to be so friendly at all. As a conclusion, even though the main character had a strong feeling for her home country, she still couldn’t accept the rules and values of this place but, after emigrating, she still felt alienated as well in this new place which is unfortunately the fate of many refugees. Anyway, the damned thing turned out to be quite fascinating to behold.

Good Time
Notes: This movie turned out to be pretty dark and bleak but what I impress me was how relentless and unpredictable the damned thing turned out to be. Seriously, pretty much every 5 minutes, you saw the main character making a left turn and their masterstroke was that it never felt like a gimmick. Indeed, even though most of his decisions would be considered as misguided in any normal context, it did somehow always make sense in his own dark and twisted world. And if you still have any doubts about Robert Pattinson’s acting talent, you should definitely check this movie. Indeed, he completely nailed this performance as he managed to make his character charismatic (how would he otherwise manage to get out of trouble every time again?) but he also removed any form of glamour attached to his public personality. You could argue that none of the characters was actually developed but giving more details about any of them might have ruined its mystic appeal. Furthermore, it actually fit Connie's way of thinking. For him, it didn’t really matter who he or the people around him were. The only thing that mattered was how he could achieve his next short-term goal and how the people around him could be of any use. Eventually, I enjoyed this movie so much that I might have to re-watch ‘Uncut Gems’ at some point.

An average movie

“In my opinion, even though ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ has become a cult-classic, I thought it was only a decent watch at best but since I kept hearing some interesting things about this new directing effort from Drew Goddard, I was still eager to check it out. Well, I have to admit that the damned” read more

Life Is Beautiful
Notes: I remember it very well, before and when it came out, this movie was actually rather controversial. The big question was, at the time, are you allowed to make a comedy about something terrible like the holocaust? Eventually, this movie turned out to be a huge financial success (It has been so far the highest grossing movie to be made in Italy), and a critical success (many, even me, were actually surprised that Roberto Benigni actually won the Academy Award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role, beating in the process Edward Norton who was quite impressive in ‘American History X’). For Benigini, this feature will forever remain his magnum opus, as a director and as an actor and, to be honest, before or after, he has never made anything coming close the level of this classic. Anyway, this whole controversy was, in my opinion, rather ridiculous because half of the movie was actually a drama and quite an heartbreaking one. Furthermore, the reason to use those jokes was completely justified as in, order to survive, you'd better keep a good sense of humor.

“To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this franchise but since all the instalments were made available by my TV provider, I thought I might as well check them out. Well, this sequel was probably the laziest I have seen so far. Basically, the dilemma faced by the makers was that John Kramer A.K.A Jig” read more

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it some point. Since this movie had a really impressive reputation, I had some rather high expectations but it is often tricky with such old classics. Indeed, they might have been groundbreaking when they were released but it is not always the case when you watch them decades later. Well, there was nothing to worry about this movie as it was pretty damned entertaining. Indeed, back then, it was quite a controversial feature but, even 50 years later, it is still very dynamic and terribly effective. The other thing I really liked with this movie is that they took a famous story but, instead of trying to as factual as possible, they gave it a very modern twist and focused instead on providing a strong tale. Furthermore, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were some great choices to play these famous characters and they had some really nice chemistry together.

“Even though this movie was rather poorly received, since I have a weak spot for George Clooney’s work, I was still eager to check it out. Well, unfortunately, even if it was easily Clooney’s most ambitious directing effort so far, the damned thing still turned out to be disappointing. At least, ” read more
