The Pianist
Notes: Roman Polanski is one of my favorite directors and still in the 2000's he keeps making great pictures. Indeed, this story was harrowing and Adrien Brody also gave a huge performance. Still, I have to admit it, at first, when I saw that this movie was the best Polanski has made, according to the IMDb ratings, I used to scratch my head a little bit. I mean, do the people have any idea what this guy had done previously in his career? However, I have re-watched it recently and, indeed, I have to agree, it is a great movie, one of Polanski's best, and absolutely a great achievement. Apparently, for many years, he was toying with the idea about making a movie about this subject and even Spielberg asked him to direct 'Schindler's list' but, since he was himself a holocaust survivor, he felt really uncomfortable with this topic for many years which is quite understandable. Eventually, at 70 years old, when he felt that the time was right, he finally made his own movie about the holocaust, a heartbreaking true tale of another survivor, and he managed to make one of the best movies in this genre.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I remember it very well when it came out. Indeed, back then, it was a big scandal which was quite understandable since it was dealing with some very kinky scenes. For example, to get you in the right mood, the whole thing started with 3 different sex scenes. Now, that's what I call an introduction ! Maybe you might think that I am some major pervert but, in my opinion, this story was just really fascinating. Indeed, for once, it wasn’t dealing with your usual boring perfect heroes, it was this time focusing on some really twisted minds with some rather sick obsessions. On top of that, the directing was really solid and the cast was also really strong. I was above all impressed by Deborah Kara Unger who got her breakthrough with this movie and I thought she was quite mesmerizing in this flick. Eventually, I think this movie is seriously underrated and, in my opinion, it is actually one of the best movies coming from this director.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect but since there was a solid cast involved and since it was available on Netlfix, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I have to admit that I’m not a really huge fan of such loud and slightly hysterical musicals (‘Hamilton’ was quite amazin” read more

Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Wong Kar-Wai and, eventually, even though I have a great admiration for his work, I came to the conclusion that I’m actually not really a huge fan. This movie is however the exception though. Indeed, it was the very first movie I saw from this director, it definitely had a really strong impact on me and it is still by far my favorite. As usual with this director, it was a really gorgeous movie with a great sountrack and not one but two very mesmerizing love-stories. The 2nd tale was slightly better and, Tony Leung, who still is after all these years my favorite Asian actor, was as usual really strong in this movie. Eventually, this director was always more interested in the mood than telling an actual story and the whole thing was just quite fascinating to behold. Anyway, after all these years, I still love this movie and it remains one of my favorite romantic movies.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Clint Eastwood, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though I did appreciate the anarchist vibe, it is hardly surprising that it had been a commercial and critical flop when it was rele” read more

Notes: Well, after all these years, it is still such a great movie and easily the best movie about movies. Back then, there was no television and you couldn't download the movies and you had to be there, in the movies theaters, and it was a magical experience. For me, to rewatch this flick after all these years was such a powerful experience. Indeed, I started to go to the movies when I was a little kid, back then, I was already fascinated and, after all these years, after watching maybe 6000 movies, it is still my greatest passion. This movie perfectly gave the reason why. Basically, movies are all about emotions, about dreaming, about leaving everything behind and getting involved in something bigger than yourself. Nowadays, with the streaming platforms and the download frenzy, it has become a more solitary activity but we still have the huge blockbusters in the movie theaters that provide a similar communal experience as displayed in this movie. Anyway, it is a beautiful and nostalgic picture.
