Waltz with Bashir
Notes: I was really impressed as the damned thing turned out to be even better than I expected. Indeed, it really blew me away and it turned out to be easily one of the best movies released in 2008. Not only it turned out to be a heartbreaking and fascinating picture, I was also amazed about how original the whole thing was. Indeed, it is a very original animated picture, something really unique, and it is pretty obvious that they would have probably never succeeded in telling this story with a traditional live action version or something more straightforward. Furthermore, as it was pointed out by Roger Ebert, it was also a devastating picture. Indeed, not only it was a really original feature, it was also an important movie dealing with a horrible page of history but, on top of that, they also developed this tale from a point of view dealing with the human mind and psychology. That's why using animation was not a useless gimmick in this case as it allowed the makers to deliver some surrealist imagery to display dreams, hallucinations and subconscious traumas. To be honest, it is a bit messy and the lack of narrative structure can be slightly frustating but it might have more to do with the fact that we have been so addicted to the generic basic narrative rules (introduction, development, conclusion).

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Julia Roberts, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, concerning Roberts, I was definitely one of her most interesting parts and I have to admit that she was not bad at all but, to be honest, I didn’t think that” read more

Quai des Orfèvres
Notes: I have just discovered that, after WWII, Henri-George Clouzot wasn’t allowed to make another movie following the release of ‘Le corbeau’, a movie which was very quickly criticized in France for the way it portrayed the French people very negatively. After 4 long years, following a very long fight from his defenders, Clouzot was able to get back to work coming up with this feature which was once again a massive critical and commercial success. Basically, you had most of Clouzot’s trademark here. Indeed, it is a film noir, a detective story, and most of the characters involved had some rather dubious morality. Ultimately, this movie never reached the level of his greatest movies ‘Les diaboliques’ and ‘Le salaire de la peur’ but since those are two are among the very best French movies ever made, that would be asking a lot. Eventually, after this movie, Clouzot would direct 2 rather obscure features (‘Manon’ and ‘Miquette et sa mère’) but he would make eventually a massive come-back with the really impressive ‘Le salaire de la peur’.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the title was promising (at least, the one they used in Canada), unfortunately, it turned out to be a seriously underwhelming roma” read more

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Notes: Basically, it is actually a really simple story but it was still completely spellbinding and I thought it was pretty awesome to behold. In my opinion, this movie is pretty much the proof that you can make a movie without any explosions, shootings, CGI or whatsover but it still can be compulsively watchable. Not so long ago, I saw ‘Witness for the Prosection’, another classic courtroom drama made in the 50’s and while I really enjoyed this movie as well, there was a very far-fetched twist towards the end which was rather underwhelming. Fortunately, there was no such gimmicks in the flick. Indeed, I believe it is one of the most straightforward thriller ever made and therefore, you don’t get the usual BS involved in this genre which resulted in a much more rewarding experience. Of course, you could argue that James Stewart was basically playing his typical righteous guy but it didn’t bother me whatsoever.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Paul Haggis and since there was a really nice cast, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, almost 10 years after winning (or stealing) the Best Picture Academy Award with ‘Crash’, Haggis came up ag” read more
