Notes: To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of costumes dramas. Indeed, even though they can be entertaining, I always have a hard time to care about all those white rich people whining about they so-called difficult life. I mean, when they are complaining about the fact that they can’t marry the woman/man/dog/whatever they love, most of the common folks were starving and working for hours to make sure the privileged one could sustain their life style. Still, I have to admit, some movies in this genre are really good and this flick is one fine example. Not surprisingly, it was directed by James Ivory, the grand-master of the genre. Apparently, he seems to be more or less retired nowadays but back then, he was at the top of his game. Indeed, the story was for once intriguing and the directing by Ivory was just really solid just as usual. Eventually, the main attraction was to see Helena Bonham Carter and Daniel Day-Lewis in their breakthrough performances though. Above all, I was once again really impressed by Day-Lewis. Indeed, if you are familiar with his work, you’ll notice that what he has created here (a repressed, snobbish Edwardian upperclassman) was really different than his other characters but it was still completely convincing and just impressive to behold.

The Postman Always Rings Twice
Notes: I have already seen two other versions of this story ('Ossessione' (1943), 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' (1981)) and this version is best one I have seen so far. Indeed, even though you didn't have the explosive sex scenes from the Jack Nicholson-Jessica Lange version, John Garfiel and Lana Turner had together some very nice chemistry and they made one of the best doomed couples I have ever seen. Basically, they were not really good, they were not really bad either, they were both continuously fighting the feelings they had but they couldn't get rid off each other. Even though it was already the 3rd time around I watched this story, it was just spellbinding and it is definitely one of the best film noir I have seen so far. It tends to drag a little bit towards the end but it might have to do with the fact that I already knew the whole thing by heart at this point.

Dirty Harry (1971)
Notes: Even though I have watched many times the Spaghetti Westerns starring Clint Eastwood when I was a kid with my dad, I discovered his Dirty Harry flicks much later on in my life. Eventually, even though I still prefer his Westerns, I still enjoyed his famous cop features as well. The interesting thing with this franchise is that the sequels were actually pretty decent but, obviously, this first installment was the only one which became a real classic. Indeed, Harry Calahan must be one of the most notorious police characters ever created, very often copied but never matched. At the time, Clint Eastwood was pretty much in control of his career. He picked up 4 different drafts of the script (one written by no one else than Terrence Malick). made sure that Don Siegel was hired to direct this movie and he was also responsible for hiring Andy Robinson to play Scorpio. When it was released, it was a critical and commercial success but there was also some controversy as it displayed and almost glorified police brutality. Basically, the Scorpio killer was pretty messed up and, eventually, Harry Calahan was not much better, he just happened to be on the right side of the law.

An average movie

“Since this movie had been really poorly received when it was released, I didn’t expect much but since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, at least, you have to give Akiva Goldsman some credit to tackle something so ambitious (Apparently, Martin Scor” read more

West Side Story
Notes: I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of musicals but this one was definitely an exception. Sure, it was yet another adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ but it is one of the very few movies which managed to give a satisfying modern twist to this timeless tale. Furthermore, most of the songs were pretty neat (even if none of the main cast actually sang those tunes) but, above all, I really loved the dancing which was some of the best I have seen in a musical. If you are familiar with Michael Jackson’s work, you will notice that this movie had a huge influence on him which was pretty cool as well. The only issue I might have had with this movie is that it was maybe slightly too long. Indeed, even though it was actually a rather simple story which took place only during 2 days, they still managed to reach more than 150 minutes of running time but that’s something that often happens with such musicals when the characters stop every 2 minutes to sing a song.
