West Side Story
Notes: I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of musicals but this one was definitely an exception. Sure, it was yet another adaptation of ā€˜Romeo and Julietā€™ but it is one of the very few movies which managed to give a satisfying modern twist to this timeless tale. Furthermore, most of the songs were pretty neat (even if none of the main cast actually sang those tunes) but, above all, I really loved the dancing which was some of the best I have seen in a musical. If you are familiar with Michael Jacksonā€™s work, you will notice that this movie had a huge influence on him which was pretty cool as well. The only issue I might have had with this movie is that it was maybe slightly too long. Indeed, even though it was actually a rather simple story which took place only during 2 days, they still managed to reach more than 150 minutes of running time but thatā€™s something that often happens with such musicals when the characters stop every 2 minutes to sing a song.

The Look of Silence
Notes: Since I really loved ā€˜The Act of Killingā€™, I was of course really eager to watch Joshua Oppenheimer's directing follow-up, especially since it was some kind of sequel to ā€˜The Act of Killingā€™. Well, even though even it turned out be a more straightforward documentary than his previous directing effort, I was still really impressed and pretty much floored by the damned thing. In my opinion, this movie is such a deep dive into the human soul and it was just fascinating to behold. I mean, this genocide in Indonesia was just the stuff of nightmare and it pretty much gives us a glimpse of what might have happened if the Nazis wouldnā€™t have been defeated and would still be in power nowadays. Obviously, this tragedy has been a huge trauma for the Indonesian people and it was just so fascinating to see how the people interviewed were dealing with this. Of course, if it would have been a US fictional feature, there would have been some tears and people apologizing for their deeds but the end-result was here so much more complex. I mean, you could see on their face that, very deep down, they somehow were aware that something terrible actually took place but it was buried so deep under a huge amount of denial, propaganda, decades of brainwashing, gossip, fear,ā€¦ You could even see the ripple effect it had on the children of the perpetrators but even the victims were struggling to deal with these events. Eventually, it is quite amazing that, from such a horror, the makers managed to deliver something so humanistic.

Notes: It turned out to be a really strong documentary but, to be honest, even though it was sometimes shocking, some of it was actually hardly surprising, Iā€™m afraid. Eventually, the only critic I might have was that the whole thing was rather scattered. Indeed, most of the duration was about the massively creepy and even rather horrifying Larry Nassar but, sometimes, it felt like the makers wanted to go beyond that and show that the gymnastics world, in general, on that such high competitive level, is actually based on child cruelty. I know my wife has always been a huge fan of gymnastics and she watches it on TV on a regular basis but I would rather skip it from now on. In this documentary, it was also argued that the cruelty regarding this young children is something specific to this sport but, while it seems to be indeed on a rather extreme level in this sport, in almost all major sports, children are scouted at a very young age. Coming back to Larry Nassar, I wonder why the USA Gymnastics didnā€™t quietly get rid off him and get some other doctor instead? I mean, Bela and Marta Karolyi, even if they might seem pretty evil as well, were the cornerstone of the whole training programme but Nassar didnā€™t seem to be some kind of wonder doctor. Anyway, even if I wish they went a little bit deeper on the problematic of having such young children competing at such a high level, the whole thing was still quite heart-breaking and really interesting to behold.

Notes: I have been following Mira Nair for quite some time now and this movie must be her best one I have seen so far (it was also the very first of her directing efforts I saw, if I recall correctly). Apparently, I wasn't the only one who really enjoyed it since this flick won the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival which was probably the reason why I wanted to watch it in the first place. Anyway, it is basically a very interesting study of the middle class in India. At first, the story may sound like a soap and it did look like a soap-opera in some way but it was eventually much more than that. Indeed, even though there were many characters, they were all well developed, I thought they were all quite interesting and I really cared about those characters and what they were going through. In a certain way, this movie also shows where the Indian society stands nowadays, between tradition and modernity.

An average movie

“I wasnā€™t expecting much from the damned thing but since I have a weak spot for Miles Teller, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that the beginning was actually seriously promising. Sure, Miles Teller was basically playing his usual smartass guy but I think ” read more

The Queen's Gambit
What is it about? Orphaned at the tender age of nine, prodigious introvert Beth Harmon discovers and masters the game of chess in 1960s USA. But child stardom comes at a price. My verdict: After hearing so many good things about this mini-series, I was really eager to check it out. On top of that, even if I suck at chess, I always found this game so fascinating. Well, the damned thing didnā€™t disappoint me, even if I would have to agree with the critics saying that it is basically a super-hero tale. Indeed, even if it was always really entertaining, the story was not really original and even rather predictable. However, what really sold me was the amazing performance by Anya Taylor-Joy. Indeed, she is always interesting in every role she takes but, here, she gave her best work so far and basically carried the whole thing on her shoulders. She is basically one of the best actresses of her generation, no less than that.
