Notes: This movie was the start of a very prolific relationship between Johhnny Depp and Tim Burton and for many viewers, it is, so far, the best movie directed by Tim Burton. It was also the rebirth of Johnny Depp who was back then struggling with his teenage heartthrob image but with this flick, he made it clear he wanted something else in his career. From then on, he became one of the most excentric, original and fascinating actors (a box-office poison according to the major studio producers). But everything changed because of Captain Jack Sparrow... Since then, Depp has become the box-office king for a while but I'm afraid his new movies, even though they were maybe hugely popular, were not really interesting compared to what he did before in the 90's. Anyway, his first movie with Tim Burton was pretty awesome. I think I enjoyed 'Big Fish' a little more but it is definitely a close call. Basically, the story was some kind of twisted fairy tale, the whole thing looked gorgeous and Depp gave one of his best performances.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: At last, the Coen brothers finally did it. They finally got their deserved Academy Award for the Best Picture! And, yet, I have to admit that I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about this movie. The first issue was that there was such a hype when it came out and, to be honest, I was actually a slightly disappointed. I mean, sure, it was very good, no doubt it, but I’m not sure if it was really great. Eventually, I had to see the damned thing a 2nd time to really make up my mind. Well, even though I did appreciate it more than the first time around, I was still not completely blown away. I mean, the directing was really neat, the acting was very strong, the story was pretty good but something was missing there to make it truly spellbinding and, personally, I still prefer 'There will be blood' which was released the very same year. Still, there was a great cast (Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald), especially Brolin who, thanks to his performance in this movie, made an impressive comeback and is nowadays one of the most sought-after actors at work nowadays.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: I thought it was a great thriller but totally different from what you would get from a typical commercial thriller. There were no shootings, chases, explosions or anything, it was all about the characters and what they are going through and I thought it was quite fascinating to watch. I remember it very well, I got this DVD from a colleague who didn't like it at all but that didn't surprise me. Indeed, Haneke is the specialist of the enigmatic thriller and even though he always create a fascinating and unsettling set-up, he never gives some simple explanations or answers, as a matter of fact, usually he doesn't explain anything at all which can be frustrating for the casual viewers who are used to the dumbed down commercial features produced by Hollywood. Personally, I love this approach, it creates a mesmerizing atmosphere and you have to make up on your own what is actually going on. 4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch the damned thing at some point. Even though François Truffaut died to soon at the beginning of the 80’s, on the other hand, Jean-Luc Godard, the other master of the Frenh New Wave, has been quite productive even nowadays but I always thought that his work has become increasingly frustrating and alienating. It’s too bad because the movies he made at the beginning of his career were just amazing and his directing debut, ‘À bout de souffle’, is still one of my all-time favorite movies. This movie is another perfect example. Indeed, basically, pretty much like in ‘À bout de souffle’, Godard didn’t really have a plot here and, instead, you just followed the 3 characters through some random scenes in Paris. Following the philosophy of the New Wave, Godard went for a very loose narration but it worked really well here and I thought the whole thing was quite spellbinding to watch. Eventually, the only small thing about this movie is that the trio Sami Frey, Claude Brasseur and Anna Karina was not as charismatic as the duo Jean-Paul Belmond and Jean Seberg but it wasn’t a big deal. 4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Basically, it was a great epic about Italy but I don't think it was historically accurate whatsoever. However, this inaccuracy was done on purpose Indeed, I think it was more a poetic study about the class struggle as it was rather over the top and quite theatrical. Robert de Niro, here at the beginning of this career, had a rather thankless job though since he had to portray a coward and weak man instead of the tough guys were are used to see him play. He did a great job though but I was even more impressed by Gérad Depardieu. Indeed, he completely disappeared behind his character and gave an awesome performance, full of fire and passion. Honestly, it was just awesome to see the greatest American actor and the greatest French actor together in a movie and both of them were on top of their game.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: I have seen this movie so many times, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and it has never lost its appeal. Basically, it is a gorgeous picture at the same time dark and bleak but also joyful and charming. However, it is slightly annoying that Tim Burton got most of the credit concerning this picture when in fact, Henry Selick is the one who actually directed the whole thing. Eventually, in my opinion, Henry Selick is the one responsible for his greatness whereas Tim Burton was too busy working on other projects to actually directing it ... Selick should be the one credited for this jewel, not Burton. Of course, I have to admit it, you can see Tim Burton's influence as he provided many sketches in order to create the characters. Anyway, it is one of the darkest fairy tales I have ever seen, it is very bold and you should probably don't show it to young children. Anyway, it is visually mind-blowing, the characters are fascinating and I even liked the songs . In this genre, it is the best movie of its kind. 4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: I remember it very well, when this movie was released, it was a critical success so I had some pretty big expectations the first time around. Well, I’m glad I watched it again because I enjoyed it even more. Indeed, the concept might seem silly and you can imagine that an American movie would have gone for the cheap laughs but I was surprised by how subtle the damned thing turned out to be. Sure, to see the fall of the Berlin wall and of Eastern Germany in general from this perspective was quite interesting and the clash between the Eastern and Western world as well and it was all quite funny and entertaining but, actually, they went really deeper than that. Basically, it might be one of the very few comedies (maybe even the only one?) which was based on a lie and it still actually worked. Indeed, it is most of the time a useless gimmick because the reason a lie is used are almost always worthless but, in this case, it actually did make sense. Of course, it was completely impractical and fairly ridiculous but the reason why was actually sound and, above all, the main character did it for love and completely regardless of his self-interest. Furthermore, I also loved the tone and it might be one of the most melancholic comedies I have ever seen. Seriously, this mixing of drama and comedy was pretty much flawless. 4 years, 5 months ago
