Notes: It is nowadays a rather forgotten movie but I thought it was actually fascinating. In my opinion, it is one of the darkest dramas ever made about WWII I have ever seen and I thought that there was a really impressive amount of depth put in the characters, especially the main one who was quite fascinating. Indeed, the directing was very well done and, above all, Klaus Maria Brandauer gave probably the best performance of his career. Since then I have seen some other movies starring this guy but none of them really impressed me like this one. Anyway, he was really mesmerizing here, giving life to a fascinating but also flawed character. On top of that, this movie was also a very interesting meditation about Art and while watching this you might wonder, when you are dealing with Art in general, where does it start and where does it end and how far should you go in order to reach your artistic goals?4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Like many other heralded movies released in 2019, even if I really liked the damned thing, it didn’t really blow me away though. The point was that, sure, it was indeed visually and technically impressive. However, even though the story was decent enough, to be honest, it was nothing really original or amazing. At least, the plot wasn’t as ridiculous as it was in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ (a movie with an amazing intro but otherwise seriously overrated). Indeed, everything happening was fairly realistic but, again, there was nothing really ground-breaking about these 2 soldiers involved in some seemingly impossible mission to bring a crucial message. Furthermore, pretty much like Christopher Nolan with ‘Dunkirk’, Sam Mendes chose a realistic approach regarding his characters but, while this approach definitely has its merits, it also has its downside. I mean, on one hand, you really feel that you are dealing with some average soldiers, that they could be anyone, the boy-next-door, yourself, your brother,… However, on the other hand, you do end up with some ‘average’ characters who were barely charismatic and who didn’t have any real distinctive features or personalities. Still, there is no doubt that the visuals by Roger Deakins (easily one of the best cinematographers at work nowadays) were just so impressive and it is possible that I would have enjoyed this movie more if I had seen it on the silver screen and not at home. 4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Through the years, the Academy has made some poor choices but, lately, I have to admit that they finally got it right and this movie was definitely a worthy winner. Eventually, I still think that 'Boyhood' was in fact a better choice but this flick was really not far behind and I liked it a lot. To be honest, I thought that the actual play was in fact about Birdman so I was expecting something slightly different but that wasn't a big deal, in the contrary. What we got here was a very smart, very well directed movie with some really impressive performances. Indeed, it was filled with some very long takes and you can imagine that it must have been rather daunting for the actors involved (apparently, Inarritu was actually eager to shot the whole thing in one single take but the actual merit of this rare technic is rather questionable if you ask me). For Inarritu, it is the crowning of an already impressive and pretty much flawless career and, for all the actors involved (Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts), it was a definitely a very high point in their career.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: This flick is one of Akira Kurosawa’s most famous movies and probably his last masterpiece. In fact, the guy apparently spent decades prepping for this movie and I think it definitely shows on the screen. Indeed, he began writing the film 10 years before its release and he spent also ten years storyboarding every shot in the film as some paintings. This preparation went so far that ‘Kagemusha’, his previous directing effort, was actually some kind of 'practice' for the great Japanese master before creating this piece of Art. Still, I don’t think it is really one of his most accessible movies though. Indeed, even though it is definitely a gorgeous flick, I have to admit that it is also rather long and pretty slow. In fact, it is even a rather basic story about a ruthless Lord who has to deal with his legacy which ends up being pretty tricky since he has 3 sons. Still, if you are patient enough, it is a really rewarding experience with some beautiful scenes and some really strong performances. 4 years, 5 months ago
