Searching for Sugar Man
Notes: Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and, boy, I wasnā€™t disappointed. First of all, contrary to some other similar documentaries dealing with some lost music artists like ā€˜Anvil: The Story of Anvilā€™ or ā€˜The Devil and Daniel Johnstonā€™, Rodriguezā€™ music was actually pretty good and some of his songs have some mesmerizing quality ('Crucify your mind' totally gave me the goosebumps). So, that was a already good start but the best part was this incredible tale about this artist who never had any mainstream success at all anywhere in the world but, somehow, became a huge icon in South African as big as Elvis Presley or the Beatles. I was glad I didnā€™t know much about the guy or this movie beforehand (like the majority of the rest of the world) because this movie had some major twists. I think I shouldnā€™t talk much about it because I donā€™t want to spoil it but the last 30 minutes were pretty messianic. This tale ends up on a really inspiring note and this Rodriguez guy turned out to be one of the most intriguing music artists I have ever heard of.

An average movie

“To be honest, I didnā€™t have some really high expectations but since I have a weak spot for Liam Neeson and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it was a nice surprise that Florence Pugh was involved with a small apart but Iā€™m afraid it was probably the” read more

To Kill a Mockingbird
Notes: Since it is such a massive classic, I was really eager to check it out and I had some really high expectations towards the damned thing. Eventually, the more I think about it, the more I come to believe that this movie might be actually rather overrated, even by myself. I mean, it is indeed a huge classic and I really liked it but there were definitely some elements that did bother me. The first thing was probably the fact that Roger Ebert surprisingly didn't like it and, in his review, he developed some really solid arguments about what went wrong with this movie. Furthermore, I thought it did take a very long time to take off. Also, you always hear that Atticus Finch is a great character, brilliantly played by Gregory Peck. It is true but actually the movie didn't focus on him but on his children and I wasn't thrilled by this choice. Anyway, to conclude, I should definitely rewatch it at some point to make up my mind about the damned thing but, for the time being, it remains a very good movie.

Notes: To be honest, I always had a hard time with Wes Anderson. I mean, I always admired his work and his movies have always been visually impressive but I was missing something in his stories and I usually didnā€™t connect with them very well. Anyway, at last, with this movie, he finally nailed it. Indeed, he finally managed to mix his whimsical visual style and his hilarious characters with a very entertaining plot. To be honest, I still think I prefer ā€˜Fantastic Mr. Foxā€™ but this movie is definitely not far behind. Along the years, Wes Andeson has managed to get many interesting actors under his wings and it seemed that they all showed up for this movie. Indeed, every single character was played by some known figure and you might wonder if it was not really distracting but it actually worked out fine. Of course, Ralph Fiennes played the main character with a lot of gusto and he delivered once again a terrific performance. He is and remains one of the best actors of his generation and he was definitely one of the reasons why this movie worked so well. Still, at the end of the day, what was this movie all about? Nothing much, Iā€™m afraid. But does it have to be? Not necessarily, especially when it is so entertaining.

A very good movie

“About 6 months ago, I saw ā€˜Uncut Gemsā€™ but even though I did like this movie, to be honest, I havenā€™t been really blown away though. However, since this previous directing effort had been also really well received, I was still eager to give the Safdie brothers another shot. Well, this time aro” read more

Good Time
Notes: The one thing I did really enjoy in ā€˜Uncut Gemsā€™ was the raw energy these guys brought and it was already present in this movie. Once again, it was pretty dark and bleak but what I impress me was how relentless and unpredictable the damned thing turned out to be. Seriously, pretty much every 5 minutes, you saw the main character making a left turn and their masterstroke was that it never felt like a gimmick. Indeed, even though most of his decisions would be considered as misguided in any normal context, it did somehow always make sense in his own dark and twisted world. And if you still have any doubts about Robert Pattinsonā€™s acting talent, you should definitely check this movie. Indeed, he completely nailed this performance as he managed to make his character charismatic (how would he otherwise manage to get out of trouble every time again?) but he also removed any form of glamour attached to his public personality. You could argue that none of the characters was actually developed but giving more details about any of them might have ruined its mystic appeal. Furthermore, it actually fit Connie's way of thinking. For him, it didnā€™t really matter who he or the people around him were. The only thing that mattered was how he could achieve his next short-term goal and how the people around him could be of any use. Eventually, I enjoyed this movie so much that I might have to re-watch ā€˜Uncut Gemsā€™ at some point.
