Notes: Eventually, it actually turned out to be definitely one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. First, they gave us this opening with this famous melancholic guitar tune which kept coming back throughout the whole thing. Then, in the very first scene, there was this 5 year old girl holding her dead dog while both her parents were being shot by a plane. I mean, it was just 5 minutes into the movie and I was already a total wreck...Then, they kept bringing again and again some heartbreaking scenes and, as expected, the end was also completely devastating. A few weeks before, I actually saw 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' and everybody seemed to think that it was a major tearjerker but even though it was indeed pretty heavy, compared to this feature, it was actually a piece of cake. A part from that, the acting by the kids was just really impressive and I also enjoyed the writing. Indeed, all the characters were three dimensional and felt really genuine in the sense that they were sometimes nice and sometimes pretty nasty, even the two children. I have to admit that I didn't care much about the whole cross stealing thing but, a part from that, this movie was really impressive.

In the Heat of the Night
Notes: Since this movie won the Academy Award for the Best Picture, I was really eager to check it out but, for some reasons, it took me about 10 years to finally see the damned thing. Well, I can tell you, it was definitely worth the wait and this movie completely deserved its stellar reputation. Indeed, it was such a powerful movie and it is not very often that I saw a movie who felt so historically important. Indeed, there are tons of movies like ‘Philadelphia’ who explores some important issues but at least a decade too late while this movie was made when the segregation was still going strong in the South of the USA. Indeed, the whole thing was just so intense, especially the first half which was just so spellbinding to behold. It’s interesting that, the very same year, Sidney Poitier made also ‘Guess Who's Coming to Dinner’ which is also considered a classic but this movie felt really outdated but not this one. Indeed, from the moment they find Tibbs waiting for his train, you could feel the tension, the actual clash of 2 different worlds and you could feel that the whole situation might go south at any moment.

An average movie

“I didn’t have some great expectations regarding this flick but since it was directed by Luc Besson, I was still eager to check it out. Following the debacle around ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ (a movie which wasn't so bad in my opinion), EuropaCorp, Besson’s film production,” read more

The Social Dilemma
Notes: Even if I probably didn’t learn anything really new, it was still an intriguing documentary with a whole bunch of people much smarter than me. I have to admit that, at first, the content was fairly depressing and it slowly became even darker and, towards the end, it was pretty much the most nightmarish doomsday scenario that you could imagine. At least, I’m glad I’m part of the last generation which was born before the internet and the smartphones and, as a result, I don’t actually use any social media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram so I didn’t really have to feel guilty while watching the damned thing. Still, as a parent, I became slightly worried for my youngest daughter though. Indeed, she is now 14 years old and pretty much spends all her free time on her smartphone so, to hear how hurtful it could be for her on so many levels was slightly distressing. Anyway, is the situation so bad after all? I mean, when I was growing up in the 80’s and the 90’s, people were complaining that we were watching too much television, then they were complaining that our video-games were just too violent,... On the other hand, in this case, the scale is actually here much bigger and the usage is also so much intense, it just never stops. Furthermore, there is also an actual conscious choice to actually manipulate the users which was never really the case with TV and video-games. Eventually, how will it all end? Difficult to say and, if you would believe some people, nobody even knows what is really actually going on anymore.

A very good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. The Draughtsman
Notes: To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie but I think it was because the critic in the TV mag was pretty good. Anyway, even though I didn’t really expect it, it turned out to be a major milestone in my movie watching. Indeed, back then, I was much younger, I had never seen anything like this before and I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. I think that the first thing that impressed me with this movie was its visual aspect. Basically, it deals with art and painting and it is probably the movie which made the best connection with the painting art I have ever seen. Furthermore, there was also a mesmerizing surrealist vibe with this movie and even though the plot and the characters were rather murky, it was one of the most spellbinding movies I have ever seen. Concerning Peter Greenaway, it was his breakthrough feature film, it would be also his first movie I managed to watch and I became right away a big fan of his work.
