Notes: I remember perfectly when I saw this flick the first time. Back then, I just started to live in the Netherlands and I came back to France for the Christmas holidays. For the 1st installment, my best buddy had no idea what to expect but, this time, he was just dying to watch this follow-up. Therefore, we planned to watch this one and we went once again with a group of friends. Anyway, it was definitely pretty awesome, I was really starting to feel the epicness of the whole thing and, in my opinion, it was actually better than 'The Fellowship'. Indeed, this time, there was no need to introduce the characters and most of the movie was filled with some amazing battle scenes. On top of that, there was still one major character who was finally properly introduced and it was Gollum. Basically, it was the first time that such a 3 dimensional and compelling character was created through CGI and motion capture and it was just truly mind-blowing. It was totally revolutionary and we should give credit to both Jackson and Serkis for this amazing work. So, it was better than the previous installment but, of course, those 3 movies should be seen as one huge epic story.4 years, 4 months ago

Notes: I remember it as it it was yesterday. The first time, I watched this movie, I was so scared sh*tless... I was with a whole bunch of friends and nobody was really paying attention to the movie but I was completely fixated and the scene with the TV (if you have seen it, you know what I'm talking about...) was, at the time, one of most frightening scenes I have ever seen. The funny thing is that I re-watched it again, 10 later years and, honestly, it wasn't as terrifying as I thought it was (maybe it has to do with the fact that I was really stoned the first time but let's move on to something else...). Anyway, even though it may not be as scary as I thought it was, it still remains one of my favorite horror movies. Indeed, after all these years, it remains a fascinating story told with some very competent directing. I just loved the way the actors tell you their story without constantly rationalizing what's going one which was, in my opinion, the biggest issue with the US remake. Sure, the whole thing is actually completely preposterous but I thought it was completely spellbinding anyway. Eventually, it's a shame that the remake is much more famous than this original version.4 years, 4 months ago

Notes: Basically, it is one of those classics I knew I should watch at some point but I kept postponing it indefinitely since I was pretty sure I would have a hard time to care about the damned thing. And, indeed, If you are a real movie buff, you have to watch this movie at some point but, man, it remains a tough watch though... I mean, I have to admit it, it was pretty impressive from a technical point of view and it has a huge historical value but it is also seriously boring and quite sickening to behold. Basically, half of the movie is about Adolf and his demented buddies making some dreadful speeches and the other half is about some endless marches involving 1000’s and 1000’s of fanatics in uniform. Like I said before, it was quite groundbreaking at the time and you can imagine that Leni Riefenstahl couldn't resist the temptation of making such a huge production with a virtually limitless budget so she did some pretty impressive stuff visually speaking making the most notorious propaganda feature ever conceived. Still, I felt pretty sick during most of the duration and even their uplifting music couldn’t cheer me up.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Nowadays, Wim Wenders doesn't do anything really amazing anymore but, back in the 90's, I was a huge fan and tried to watch as many of his movies as possible. This movie was the last one he made in the 90's and it was definitely a great flick. If I'm not mistaken, it was one of the first documentaries I ever saw in the movie theater and I really loved the damned thing. To start with, the music was just downright amazing (eventually, a couple of years later, I had the privilege to see Omara Portuondo in a concert in my hometown in France. Good times!). Those old guys were also quite interesting and I thought that the whole thing was really spellbinding to watch. I'm afraid most of them must have passed away by now (I don't dare to double-check this on the internet as it might be really disheartening...) but it was just pretty neat to see them finally get some deserved recognition, even if it was really late in their career thanks to Ry Cooder for making this great CD and thanks to Wim Wenders for making this documentary which was a great marketing stunt.4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: Either you like this movie or not, the fact remains that it is easily the most influential British movie released in the 90's. Even though I might prefer 'Shallow grave', I must admit that I was really impressed by the second movie directed by Danny Boyle. Indeed, there was some great directing, some great acting and it was plain and simply a very entertaining movie. Still, even though I think it is really good, I'm not sure if it is really that great though. This is a really personal point of view that you may not share at all but, personally, I think it has an ambivalent attitude towards drugs. Of course, there are some horrible parts shouting "KEEP OFF THE DRUGS" but, in some over scenes, they rather seem to have a grand time. Eventually, I think it is a very well made and fun movie with some great characters but, at the end of the day, the whole thing is actually pretty shallow. As a matter of fact, I have just re-watched it recently and, I must admit it, the 1st half was really hilarious, some of the funniest sh*t I have ever seen, which is quite striking when you consider the subject. 4 years, 5 months ago

Notes: To be honest, I'm usually not a huge fan of romantic costume dramas but I was actually surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. Indeed, it must be one of the gloomiest doomed love stories I have ever seen and, as a result, it was much more entertaining than most of the other movies in this genre. Basically, it is one of the most famous love stories but what made it so interesting was that the two main characters, Heathcliff and Cathy, never could make up their mind if they should passionately love or hate each other and, eventually, they basically destroyed one another and also the people that happened to be around. On top of that, the cast was really strong, especially Laurence Olivier who was at the top of his game back then. There were still a couple of things that slightly bothered me like the fact that Cathy's brother provided a very convenient villain or how easily Heathcliff went to America and came back as a rich man. Eventually, I wonder if this movie was a good adaptation and I might read the famous book it was based on at some point but I really enjoyed this flick.4 years, 5 months ago
